Why do people play golf?

Was it Samuel Johnson that said it wasted a good walk.

Can play tennis too, loads of free municipal courts around.  Badminton quite cheap, table tennis.  I am thinking it is the clubhouse culture that is more popular than the actual game.  The nineteenth hole is a tradition that you dont get with other individual sports.

You can get a round of golf for a tenner.

Can you?   The kit costs a lot though too.  I got a decent Prince tennis racket for £26.  How much for a basic set of clubs.

You can buy a set of decent second hand clubs on ebay for £20, even less, if thinking of starting. They can`t give them away.

Is it possible to play a round with like 2 golf sticks? a driver and a putter?

The famous courses up here, Carnoustie, St Andrews, Gleneagles, etc are expensive for a round, 120-200, but loads of decent courses that are much cheaper for a round.

I like to get a proper sweat on when doing sport, if not you might as well just go for a nice walk.

Finest game on the planet...£15 for four hours of unadulterated joy.The craic with your mates is worth the green fee on its own..of course it helps if your good at the game but without my three games a week i would be a right miserable ba$tard.Made many friends on course and at the 19th and oh... you REALLY don't need to sweat to enjoy sport.

Golf is an exceedingly skilful game when played to a high standard and for that reason it appeals to me.

Regards exercise, Rob, it is a little more strenuous that one might imagine.  Alvin (known as Titanic) Thompson famously offered a professional golfer (Byron Nelson if memory serves) three drives to his one on every hole.  The only stipulation was that Byron had to complete all three drives (regardless how perfect the first or second) and then pick the best of the trio.  I cannot recall what handicap was agreed upon, but Nelson's game fell away markedly over the back nine due to fatigue allowing Thompson to win his wager.

Golf is the best game to play. I enjoy it even more than I enjoyed footy and cricket. It's a game of high skill but equally frustrating. A never relenting search for a perfect round.

The laugh with your friends, sausage or bacon butty at the halfway hut, beers afterwards and bets settled. Perfect way to spend a Saturday or Sunday. How many sports can games be competitive when the skill level is different between participants? The perfectly designed golf handicap also ensures a 28 handicapper can enjoy a round with a far superior player and have a chance of winning!

As for expense it costs no more than gym membership. It's £2,000 or so to join @ my club then £1400 per year. IF you play at a course for 10 years its about £25 for a 4 hour round in a beautiful setting. I think that's good value compared to a sweaty gym full of fitness freaks and fatties. Same price as a season ticket at footy with less costs on top and not just for 19 games per year! Clubs can be bought for £200 and last for years. My driver is 10 years old and irons about 8. I play off 12 and can' see the point in spending fortunes on clubs that may knock one or 2 shots at most off your handicap.
