Difficult to pick just one as there is such a range of style, mood and content.
Of British artists I particularly like Eric Kennington who was an official war artist (WW1) and Walter Langley. Have painted copies of some of their work and can appreciate the great technical skill which they possessed. |

I absolutely love paintings of horses so would say Stubbs. My favourite painting of all time though is 'Scream' by Munch.

William Hogarth. I've seen some of his engravings and they are brilliant. Even looking at the in books or online! Imagine the impact they must have had.

Unoriginal but Van Gogh for me. The emotion and melancholy that he conveys in his work is unparalleled IMO.

Mannet - sublime pictures as close to a photo as you will have back then
Banksy - evocative and clever artist Hogarth - social commentator of the day. Gin Lane you could look at for hours and find something new everytime you go back to it. |

Michelangelo and Vermeer...Degas...Velazquez...Valentin Serov...Ingres, Courbet...but of Modern artists, the best shows I've been to were CHEN YI FEI at Marlborough...and ANSELM KIEFER at the Tate.

Most beautiful painting I've seen is "Eternity" or Stormy Sea by Courbet, which is in Bristol Art Gallery.

I can't have a favourite artist anymore than I can have a favourite group. I like artists that can really draw and I usually like their sketches and early versions better than their finished work. It's a bit like thinking Who's Next by the Who is brilliant until you hear Pete Townshend's demos, which are stunning.
