It is often said that the film is not as good as the book, and I'd normally be of this opinion myself, but having just read The Bourne Ultimatum by Robert Ludlum a glaring exception to the rule has been found.
I don't even consider the film to be that exceptional but the book is absolutely dire. It's akin to one of those stream of consciousness novels; poorly written and so far fetched as to be ludicrous. It has more bullets per page than commas.
'Das Boot' was a novel by Buchheim, who had quite a life, but the film is immense
But the winner must be Pierre Boule, who wrote two (unbelievably) very contrasting works. See if you can guess?
Le Pont de la Rivière Kwai and La Planète des Singes
Both went on to become legendary films

Absolute nonsense re; The Godfather. There were many underlying factors in the book not shown in the film. e.g. Luca Brasi, the only man Don Corleone feared, why?

"and 'To Kill A Mockingbird' - a better film than a book!?"
tis wrong indeed to say 'better'. But then its hard to condense classics into time restraint of a movie. Still think that was a job well done & a great movie, which I enjoyed more than the book. Same as with The Godfather.... so much gets dropped, or a movie becomes cluttered.

Lost money after reading Jaws. In the book, one of them dies. Scheider and Dreyfuss paddling off together at the end cost me a tenner betting with mates that they both don't survive.
