Just to let you know, my pigeon guest spent a nice weekend being fed and watered. I made a house for it out of the grass collecting box off a lawnmower lined with newspaper and hay.
It wandered around the patio in the sunshine following me around and managed to avoid any cats.
A couple of nice moments - he tried to get in my neighbour's cat flap while she had a house full of friends (lots of screaming, bit of an overreaction imo) and it flew up and tapped on my window yesterday.
The bird seems very used to people, and in remarkably good nick.
Anyway - after breakfast and lunch on the window sill soaking up the sun, the bird flew off westwards this afternoon.
Bon voyage feathered friend.

Do be serious, Kenny! Your suggestion only controls the population growth and is therefore a long term, and only partially effective tactic. Accepting that my strategic "eradication" arguments may meet some opposition, we need something now with immediate impact. A robust solution with "bells and whistles" is whats needed.
well it would stop thousands of cats doing what you don't want them to do as they wouldn't exist. By far the best and kindest solution.

Hello pigeon watchers! He is still around after a week, made himself at home on the back window ledge and on top of the wheelie bin.
He is particularly fond of peanuts.
Unfortunately he is attracting a lot of cat attention.
I've chased off one twice today with the watering can.
I get a bit nervous when he is on the ground pecking around for food and try to encourage him to stay up high.
He pecked my hand earlier when I went out with peanuts. Maybe I didn't hand them over fast enough.

I think it will be ok , cats rarely get pigeons , too big especially when flapping their wings .
Cats are a cowardly bunch , much prefer to get mice or fledglings.

Happily this bird has some sense - this evening he has perched on an upstairs window ledge. It's fairly inaccessible to cats.
We have some dangerous cats around. They go for frogs, mice, birds, butterflies even.

I love this story. I feed the pigeons in Bradford,surreptitiously of course. Nice healthy nuts when nobody's looking.

This bird loves peanuts. I bought a big bag from the market petfood/birdfood stall. I held it up to the window earlier and he stood there pecking at the window. He bites my hand now to get at them. It's enchanting really.

I'm ok thanks mate, hope you are too.You can get a massive bag of nuts in the pound shop. Pigeons are great although the Council say don't feed them but what the hell, they've been there as long as I can remember and aren't going away.
I used to have about 50 pigeons, a fox got in their cage and ripped most of their heads off.

Currently NO Racing - out of season.
Many birds get lost in races - due to strong winds - or low cloud, etc.
Was the Pigeon 'ringed'?
If so - could be a young Pigeon, on it's first or second race, that got lost, and therefore then exhausted, trying to find it's way home -
- or even lost it's way on a 'training flight' ... if not 'ringed'.
Far from unusual that the Pigeon is coming back, if you keep feeding it - as, that is how they train Racing Pigeon's, of course ...
- aswell as - keep showing/putting them in with a Hen Pigeon - But not allowing them to 'do any business'.
When they then race - they then cannot wait to get back home to the Hen - just in case .... Sex being a great motivator in all animals, and humans, too, naturally.

Our cat passed away last year.
Fifteen years old , and no killer instinct whatsoever.
A cat took up residence in our garden this year , starving , fed it and took to the vets.
The microchip was for close by , but the owners had split up and sold.
So we took the cat in ......today it killed a Comma(butterfly) ffs

Regarding the pigeon, no ring round it's leg. I was out all day today and left it some nuts.
This evening it was up perching on the high window ledge.
It answers to the name Henry.
When you go outside with a handful of food and say, "Henry, would you like some peanuts?" or " Henry, would you like some birdseed?" he is straight down. Remarkable intelligence

When I bring out Henry IX's breakfast tray in the morning I'll try and find out what his intentions are.
You will need to bear him a male child, otherwise your very existence may be in danger. The sooner you start...the better your chances of success.

Henry is doing great, but has been leaving a lot of c r a p (I got a swearing warning once using that word - during a thread on an episode of countdown ffs!!!). Anyway, years ago etc and I digress.
I armed myself with a hose, scrubbing brush and a pair of marigolds and did the big cleanup. Bloody pigeon thought it would be funny to kick the accumulated business (his)off the upstairs window ledge while I was cleaning beneath.
I must admit he had the advantage on me. He might even have been trying to help ..
He flew down nearly landing on my head then went off to the neighbour's roof and watched me clear up his mess.
There was a bit of angry jeering (me) and amused indifference (him) but peace now prevails.

Males can be larger and coo more. Thier coo come with a dance and fanned tail scapping the ground. They like to chase other pigeons. They tend to hold more property than girls.
Girls can be smaller. They respond by dropping their wings when accept a male. Some Breeders use the vent or hip bones to tell male or female. Male bones under tail close together. Females wider 1/2 inch. But watching behavior will help.

If it's your standard city/town pigeon they basically rock doves and like to nest in "cliffs" so they like to build nests on window ledges which to them are like cliffs, (not in trees etc). So if you've a ledge suitably high and attractive enough you might suddenly find yourself with baby pigeons...so if it's near your bedroom, be prepared for some dawn starts

I didn't really think about it until recently but you can normally tell make/female dogs and cats apart by their face.
With pigeons the males do tend to be bigger but I think their necks are also a distinctive bit, imho male necks tend to be a bit fatter and bulkier and they like to puff it and their chest out more, the female necks are more slender and just .. elegant and female like.

I can tell male/female cats and dogs apart by whether they bark or miaow.
I'll try and get a picture of it and post it on here. It doesn't seem to hang out with other birds so nothing to compare it with.

He /She doesn't bark or miaow but makes a sort of throaty noise. Like a coo noise but with a Bonny Tyler type edge to it. But very infrequent.
I looked in my bird book and it is definitely a pigeon.
I took a photo of Henry on my phone and sent it to a female friend who says it has a cheeky eye.

I wonder if it is foreign bird. It could be Dutch or German. Both of these languages are quite guttural and would account for the throaty 'coo'.

Henry is fine. Well fed. And it is 3 he owes me now. I have saved him twice from a cat.
I do my best to save that bird, and have lectured him on the danger of cats.

A freiendship between our cat and a pigeon as the cat lost his mother when it was little kitty and the wounded pigeon which we were taking care about took care of the kitty and they are still friends .

No that's not mine. I just stumbled across it on yt. Building something similar. Or my mate is. 
I've got those long pole thingys as I said plus carpet. We need to glue the carpet to the poles, stick the shelves and poles up and iy should look ok. Maybe not as good as the video but hopefully not far off. I hope my two don't ignore it. lol

It's going upstairs in the spare bedroom so no danger.
The pipes are simply the cardboard tubes that carpet is attached to as in a roll of carpet. Very sturdy they are too.

Reminds me of a story about a customer in a shop I used to work in when I was about 15. The boss told a tale of a this chap who came in with a notepad of items he wanted (well before the days of self service, think Open All Hours)
The boss went down the list, Typhoo Tea, firewood, Omo washing powder etc and came to toilet rolls. He said what colour would you like, we've got ping, blue and white. The customer said, not bothered lad, it's dark in ours. lol

I've had a tough week so apologies for lack of updates.
Good news - Henry brought a bird home last Wednesday.
They both turned up late morning, Henry pecking the window for attention, then showing some deference to the new bird.
They ate the food then sat on the upstairs window ledge huddling together.
Every day since the pair have turned up. Lunchtime usually.
The love birds.

Careful parachute, it was lovebirds that started "ThE Birds" off.
I hope it was a nice bird that he brought home. She seems to approve of Henry's live-in human. Maybe you need to organise a roost-warming party for a few of their friends!

They turned up Monday after I had got home and ate the stuff my neighbour had left out for them! Still a pair.
Then yesterday - nothing.....was desolate
This morning, both back.
They ate the peanuts....then Henry starts pecking around and taking a peculiar interest in twigs and bits of straw.
Then they both perched together on the porch roof. They were snogging, beaks and all! Enchanting.
Thing is, Henry looks thicker round the hips than the mate. Not really had a chance to compare Henry with other pigeons visually. Now Henry is into heavy petting close up I realise that Henry may be female!
Do girl pigeons make the nests? (interest in twigs/straw etc).

parachute is not the type to be silly, and have more than one name.
I do think eggs are imminent. When Henry first showed up with the partner, I really felt like a parent whose kid had brought home "the one" for the first time to meet the folks.

Henry's (Hen's) boyfriend popped by for some nuts yesterday. No sign of Hen.
No sign of either of them today.
Last time I saw Hen she was poking around and picking up twigs.

I'm glad I had the happy experience of having my pigeon friend for a while.
Down on the canal, I think the tiny moorhen chick survived - I made a few visits to make sure it got some extra food.
Moorhen parents are amazing.
One bird disappears, another one arrives needing some help.

Thanks mate. Got an extra cat at the moment. That makes 3. Took her to be spayed today (only about 8 months old) Looking for a good home. Can;t cope with 3.
