My wife got out of bed with me at 6am yesterday, had a cuppa tea and a smoke, then she went upstairs to do her hair. All of a sudden she couldn't move her arms so she started to really panic. I called an ambulance and she was rushed to hospital. Within 6 hours she had no movement in her left leg either.
We have been told today that she has a damaged spine to the C4, and there is no surgery they can do to make things better. If she doesn't start moving her limbs off her own accord in the next couple of days, then she may never get any better than she is now.
It's unbearable watching the woman you love, laying in a hospital bed and thinking yourself, this could be how you live the rest of your life.
I will stand by her til the day she dies, and if that means caring for her full time then that is what i will do.

How can a healthy women deteriorate to such an extent in the matter of hours?

Please people, don't worry about trivial things in life, it's just not worth the worry.

I have prayed today for the first time in a long while, and i would give anything for this one prayer to be answered. CryCryCry

More good news. Tracey came out of hospital three weeks ago and she's continuing to improve each day.

She is home alone most days and has ways of managing most things that she needs to do. Physio are around every week day and she has turned down any home help.

Walking is a bit of a struggle, but she is managing to do it by herself. Her left arm still has next to no movement but we are hopeful of improvement there too.

I'm hoping all this could be a distant memory in a years time.

Well that year's flew by.

Last year I gave her a valentines card whilst she was in a coma, this year I left it on the table in the dining room and she opened it once she walked down the stairs this morning. Grin

Many of you already know that Tracey's made a much better recovery than the Doc's thought she ever would, she's walking round the house unaided, albeit wobbly on her feet. She's also managed to get to a couple of Derby matches this season and a trip to Uttoxeter races in the last few months, which has meant quite a bit of walking with a stick.

She does an NHS physio session every three or four weeks plus a private physio each week, it all seems to help her. Her main problem is a subluxed  shoulder which causes her pain, the specialists saw her last week to see if they need to fuse her shoulder or see if things improve in time, they chose the latter for now because it could take two and a half years for the nerves to regrow. The left arm still has no movement yet.

She's back working two days a week, which she's really enjoying, and she does a bit from home one day a week. There's still loads of hospital/doctors appointments she has to go to but things are looking good. Before we know it it'll be Feb 2016 and I hope I can add some more good news then.

Thanks for all the well wishes we received on here.  Cool

Two years to the day since it's happened. Where does time go?

There's been no real change since the last update. Her left arm is still useless but there's slight movement there now. We've had our first holiday since it happened which I was dreading tbh, but that went fairly well so I've no qualms in us going again soon.
Her mindset is still fantastic and she's dealing with it superbly. I think they main thing she misses is driving, because she's always reliant on me/others and she feels like she's lost her independence.

S.kenbo

I don't often comment on here but feel compelled to after reading this thread for the first time. It's a real eye opener as to how people's lives can change overnight through no fault of their own.

When I made my first ever post on the HR forum you (and Chelsea Girl I think) immediately came on to welcome me to the forum. It didn't take much for you to do that but meant an awful lot to me at the time and gave me a good idea of the type of person you are. I've always considered you to be one of the most down to earth and happy go lucky characters on the HR forum which, in light of what you and your wife have been through in the last few years, is some achievement in itself.

It's heartening to read that she's now getting some of her independence back with the new car. I wish all the best to both of you going forward.

Just wanted to add my best wishes. It is amazing how adaptable the human body is and remember the prime instinct is survival. Make the most of the your time- it becomes even more valuable as you get older and inevitably runs out. This is no consolation to you, but recently it fell upon me to attend cancer clinics in the private sector over a period of months. Without going into any details I found out what I always new to be true, that those with  positive attitudes make the best of their situation. Look to the future, make the best of it and good luck!
