Samuel L Jackson is excellent in it.
It certainly isn't the best film ever made. Not even close. It's a pretty straight forward but very engaging Stephen King story (as they nearly all are hence their wide appeal) presented in a well paced but pretty straight forward way, i.e. a good story should not be confused with a good film and good film-making. Freeman's narrative elevates it, but not enough to make it great. It's good though, and still enjoyable on repeated viewings. Father Maguire is right in that Un Prophet is a much better and far more complicated story and a much better film. |

Raging Bull is a good film.
But Let's not get too poncy, a film is a film when it's a film, all good films have a good storyline, Shawshank Redemption is a good film, you don't have to have flashy special effects and deliberately convoluted scripts just to validate a film's status as a film. When every scene is watchable, it's a good film. |
