Must admit it did offer something new to me. I'd never learnt of a trade in kidnapping free blacks from outside the slave states and selling them off to the plantations. Solomon Northup appears to have been quite a figure in the abolitionist movement. Surprised they hadn't made a film about him a long time ago. Thought Fassbender was very good. Reminded me a bit of Fiennes as Amon Goeth.

I found myself getting bored at times which is usually a good indicator of an Oscar winning film

Nude Nuns with Big Guns (2010)

Woman at place i work went to watch 12 years a slave said it was very emotional.Sat next to her was a black man who she said sobbed throughout a lot of the film.when her and her husband left the cinema she said to her husband "wait here a minute i just want to go and apologise to that black man for the way we have treated him".Needless to say he just pulled her out the cinema before she could say anything

It's a bargain mac but O Brother Where Art Thou? not being there is very disappointing.

The Black Dahlia on Film4+1 now, but you've missed most of it.

The Wolf Of Wall Street was surprisingly funny, I recommend it. It's immature and actually offended the person I was with, but the Cerebal Palsy scene had me laughing my c*ck off.

Runner Runner was awful, not sure how I sat through that crap. Anybody seen Gravity? Must be the most overrated flick of all time. I left after forty-five minutes, so boring.

Filth - James Macevoy stars in a big screen adaptation of the Irvine Welsh book of the same name. They've done a really good job of this, streets ahead of the Acid House and Ecstacy and whilst surely not destined to become as a iconic as Trainspotting it is a very worthwhile companion.

seen Filth alabaster pretty good but bizarre ending, Animal Kingdom was good but Snowtown chilled me to the bone, talking of Aussie Films , Wolf Creek...

I'm glad the ending stayed faithful to the novel to be honest. Wished I'd gone to the cinema to see it really.

Yeah the torture scene, in fact pretty much the whole of Snowtown is chilling...one of those films where you can tell there's something special about it from the very first scene.  You seen Incendies? Another film with the power to devastate.

Spring Breakers - just about to start on Sky Prem...been meaning to catch this one for a while, looks pretty interesting

wow, definitely wont be everyone's cup of tea but I thought that was a really decent film...absolutely stunning to look at, one standout performance and plenty to think about it.

The hunt 2012

This is a disturbing depiction of how a lie becomes the truth when gossip, doubt and malice are allowed to flourish and ignite a witch-hunt that soon threatens to destroy an innocent man's life.

great acting/disturbing 9/10

Railway Man - watched the trailer and read a poor review and thought it looked a bit lightweight,  but not at all, it's a very powerful film about the affects of war on men afterwards, based on a true story which follows on years later from the Bridge On The River Kwai story.  Such a good film but maybe not for everybody, certainly not cosy family viewing.

A Hijacking

Anyone who enjoyed Captain Phillips would do well to watch this gritty Danish effort that switches between the increasingly desperate conditions onboard a hijacked ship and the protracted negotiations for its release a world away in a corporate boardroom.

Agreed, the only saving grace was the final arrest scene, ffw 90 mins, watch and then delete and forget - easily done

Parkland is an interesting slant on the JFK assassination

This def will not be a film for everyone, a 3-hour film with sub-titles about 2 lesbians, but BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOUR is a damn good film, very intense piece of acting between the 2 girls. 

No spoiler, but briefly it's about a young girl just about to experience her first love with a boy.......and then becomes very unsettled after a brief encounter with a slightly older blue-haired girl.  Very explicit and a 7-min sex scene is specific to say the least, and amazing what can pass now on screen compared to attitudes in the early 60's when things were only just beginning to change.

Was watching an interview afterwards with the 2 girls in the film and one of them said,

"We had fake......****"

^"We had fake......puss1es"

(didn't know we couldn't use that word on here )

blue is the warmest colour is on my watch list, was a bit put off by the running time but will have to make the effort.

Just watched "Mud"...a good ol slice of Americana..."Stand by Me" meets "Winters Bone" with a healthy dose of Huckleberry Finn chucked into the mix. Not a bad film at all, perhaps a touch sentimental for my tastes but would image it would make a great family film for those with coming of age kids.

'Aint Them Bodies Saints

A thoughtful and atmospheric outlaw romance that slow-burns its way in your consciousness. Excellent effort by first time director David Lowery, the deep south landscapes and brooding characters combine beautifully into a melancholic haze. 7.5/10

Compliance

A true story illustrating the genuine stupidity in modern America..events spiral out of control at a fast food restaurant when the manager receives a call from the police asking her to investigate a petty theft. If this wasn't faithfully based on real life events you'd walk out half way through as the ludicrous plot unfolds. You think this country has problems... 7/10

Just got back from "Inside Llewyn Davis".
Gave up after 90 minutes of tedium.
Slow. Boring unlikeable characters. Far too much use of the F word.
Forgettable music. Depressing. A total non event.
Also could someone tell the Coen brothers that completely ginger cats are always male.

if you're in the mood for a great old film, I'm Alright Jack (1959) is on iplayer for a few days to come. Great cast and script. Watched it yesterday morning for the first time in yonks and thoroughly enjoyed it. Contains nudity too.

Under The Skin (2014) - 9.5/10

Just got back from watching this. If you only see one film on the big screen this year make it this. An astonishingly affecting surreal sci-fi horror that draws you in and leaves you walking out of the cinema totally disoriented. Scarlett Johansson stars as a seductively erotic alien stalking the grey streets of Glasgow preying on the lonely and downcast. Fluctuating between striking Space Odyssey 2001 visuals and heartbreaking human catastrophes, like all great sci-fi it shines a harrowing spotlight on the human condition. If you like your plots linear and complete then it may not be for you but I defy anyone going in with an open mind not to take something out of it. Early candidate for film of the year for me.

the newest films are the best - forget anything that's more than five years old. Justin Timberlake is the best actor i ever saw. new is best. therefore the best film right now is gravity.

Really enjoyed The Hangover (the first one) laughed out loud on occasions.
Just seen The Hangover Part 3, absolutely shocking, so bad the words that can describe it accurately havent been invented yet.

There's a good older Film tonight on Channel 5 for anybody that hasn't seen it & always been a bit under rated , imo

A must see film is Triangle (currently available on YouTube) - It's a horror (so to speak) but it is more a mind bending film that I thoroughly enjoyed. You're only 15-20 minutes into the film when it ends or should I say, where it begins... you work it out. Great watch imo

The Rover

The final embers of a fading humanity flicker mournfully in David Michod's post apocalyptic Australian western where the excellent Guy Pearce stumbles through the detritus of annihilation. Stunning cinematography and a heavy mood accentuated by the use of a brilliantly muted colour palette made this one of my favourite films of the year. A solid 8 out of 10.

Highly recommend this, don't bother to watch the trailer though it's not representative.

The Book Thief
set in World War II Germany , tells the story of a young girl & a jewish refugee that hides away in their house

a pleasant little watch , but with no real action at all

doesn't live upto it's 8/10 rating , more a bit of a boring 6.5/10

Portraying the life of dangerous gangster Dave Bishop (Dave Courtney)

Scores lowly in ratings 5.5/10 but personally quite enjoyed the film , probably a true portrayal of Daves life , watchable enough storyline 7.5/10

Atlas Shrugged

Will probably only interest people that have read the book , but does it absolutely no justice in any way , you wouldn't rate the film otherwise

Non Stop. Liam Neeson film set on an aeroplane.

Safe House - on C4 last night, first showing.  Stunning actioner, if you liked Damon Thingie in the Bourne films, you'll love this. Denzel Washington doing what he does best.
The Guard, with the incomparable um whatsisname, the irishman, was superb also.

If you like the wilderness & haven't seen it , Into the Wild wins hands down mate you'll love it , would probably make one of my fav films :)

Donnie Darko is a film  , I must see at least 3 times every year.

The Pledge is terrific , and the high point is that the film as in real life not Hollywood  leaves the story with an unsatisfactory ending for the star of the film , far too easy for crime dramas to tie all loose ends up , this is not what happens in reality.

Has anyone seen The Descendants? It's on Ch4 tonight at 9. Any reviews welcome.

Quite a few complaints for imdb.com labelling it as a comedy drama.

It supposedly has a few comedic moments, but is mostly a dark drama.

Clooney took the role because in every film he has been in, the man he plays 'has his act together', but in this film, he hasn't.

Not my type of film.

If you haven't seen it before it's an absolute gem of a film. Angelina Jolie is simply brilliant. A very solid 9.2/10 job.

I stayed up to watch Gangster No.1 last night , it was ok some class acting but wouldn't rate top of my lists .

Will give it a watch or at least record slipster
