That's a lot of cars, why did you change them so regularly? Only had one of them myself the Alfa Sud Sprint, which must be one of the best and worst cars ever made.

A.P. my Dad bought the very same car brand new around the same time, I can still remember the reg plate - WFF 444K. We went to Newbury races one day and he floored it on the M4, if they had put wings on that thing it would have taken off.

Some lovely cars there AP. My father was made a director of his company in the late 50s and your first car, the consul, was the car he chose before swapping it for a Zephyr Zodiac. The reg plates were KGB 690 and BUS 280. Funny that I can remember them and very few of the cars I owned.

Yes I did have many more on the drive but haven't included the ones that were exclusively driven by my beautiful wife, nor the ones that I bought to sell.
Didn't exactly go from the e-type to the 128 as had them both together for a while.
At the time I was chief designer (interiors) for a brewery, and amongst other pubs I had six that were being upgraded in Carlisle, and I went there a couple of times a week, so the Fiat made more sense than going in the e-type, even though my mileage expenses were very generous!
I pretty much covered my motoring costs with expenses, and I elected not to have a company car as they were ridiculously under powered Cortina Mk 3 1300 cc!
I just loved my cars back then and was always dreaming about the next one!
I had to change fairly regularly in any case, as I was doing 25k pa just commuting and site visits
When I went self employed that went up to around 35k paso had to change or suffer inevitable repair costs and having something unsaleable on my hands!
The Alfa sprint was certainly a good and bad car! Quick and lively and wore the Pirellis out in less than 10k miles.
It had pin holing in one of the wings within 18 months, and it would have been both wings but someone crashed into it after losing control on the snow.
It was parked at the time but the guy came to the house I was visiting to say what happened.
Slippy, I remember a good few of mine. The Rover was FUE 308 K.
I did keep a few for well over 100k miles. Peugeot 136k and Citroen 114k (I think) and both bought new.
After I sold the Pug, the guy who bought it from the dealer did only 100 miles or so, and the cam belt broke! Had I kept it just one more day that would have been my problem!
posy....I guess the Consul was pretty heavy but it did the job of getting me and the guys around wit my "Ls" on, full of ale, and in all weather. It would seat six as it had a front bench seat and a three speed column change. I had to keep a firm grip of the wheel, as the tendency was to slide all over the place on the the smooth upholstery.
A big issue was no screen washers, so had to use a squeezy bottle with my arm out of the window.
Thanks for nice responses guys.To answer some questions.....Yes I did have many more on the drive but haven't included the ones that were exclusively driven by my beautiful wife, nor the ones that I bought to sell.Didn't exactly go from the e-type to
Very tough to call on that. Obviously the TR6 and the e-type were a thrill a minute.
Just to push the starter button of the E-Type was a thrill every time.
The Ginetta was a blast to drive as it weighed less than half a ton. Problem was it spent too long in the garage as it kept blowing the head gaskets!
The compression got higher with every plane of the head and also it was prone to over heating!
The Rover was quick and comfortable so would have to be in the top five I guess.
The RX8 was wonderful but totally useless on snow, ice and loose surfaces! I spun it twice in the snow when I was going at a gnats pace, and had a woman on the school run, with her kids in a people carrier, trying to pass me!
Too much power and too light at the rear and it wore out rear tyres in less than 10k miles.
The Type-R is definitely in the top five, with it's all round practicality, and screaming engine!
The MX-5 is just a joy to drive, with the top down, given every opportunity.
Given having to make a choice on them all, it would have to be The Mazda 6 MPS
A five seater saloon with everything one could need......
256 bhp, 4wd, 0-62 in 6.4 secs and top speed over 150 mph.
Only downside is the highest level road tax, 9k mile service intervals, 23 mpg if driven carefully (almost impossible) and new tyres (Bridgestones) all round every 13k miles or so!

Akabula - that phenomenon of only remembering the details of your dad's car is not unusual!
My dads first new car was a Ford Anglia Super 1200. Ermine White with a Green Flash. Cost £574 +shillings in 1964 (I was 12). Was his pride and joy! (and mine) - overriders, badge bar, spot and fog etc (front end looked like a mod's Lambretta.
Written off less than two years, complete rust bucket (Friday afternoon job apparently)

Particularly like the Ginetta G15 (would still look cool to drive today) it actually looks very similar to your Maxda MX-5
How much would the E-type be worth today if you'd kept it

I spent around £100 on new rear mufflers and front discs (quite a lot back then)!
The car was in superb condition except for a bulge in the front of the bonnet. This wasn't unusual with e-types as the bonnet hinged at the front and there was hardly any clearance between it and the top of the radiator.
This meant that if someone left a spanner, or whatever, on top of the rad the leverage when closing it would make that dint, without anyone even feeling it!
I often bemoan it's passing when I see some of the superb examples that can be £70k, but then, that is what it would have cost over time, and with a recent complete restoration.
The Ginetta was a fantastic drive and felt fast at any speed. Top speed was an indicated 118 mph but it felt more like 150 because of it's size!

I also finally had to fit a fan cooled radiator. The original concept was a flow and return pipe to a small rad at the front.
The first shock of ownership was that, when it rained, the door bins filled with water!
I had to drill a series of holes to get that away!

90% of em were around before I was driving. Id perhaps have entertained the old ass audi and maybe the sirocco (lotus wannabe) But in truth Ive been a passenger in many of em, and although ppl get dewey eyed over the likes of the triumph, they wernt particularly pleasant to travel in if you wernt driving, they leaked water, rattled and smelt.
Also some in that list have less curves than a game of tetris. They were of the time, but you have to admit a few of em were down right ghastly looking back now.

Yeah dusty, I have often said what a shock you would get, if you got to drive in some of the old cars that you loved and revered!
Just generalising but few creature comforts back then!
Power steering, electric windows, air con, pathetic levels of power, no safety features etc! It would be a real eye opener.
I thought my Cortina GT 0-60 time of 12.1 secs was good!

Love the first one. So stylish looking back, though not sure we appreciated it back then!
Even the interiors were stylish but I had one problem!
I used to get dreadfully travel sick, even on a five mile journey to town.
One bus company was the worst, as the stink of diesel, and vibration through the transmission, made me feel ill within minutes!
For that reason, and too many bad distance journeys, I refused to go on school outings in the end!

I almost got the latest one but, for whatever reason, went off at a tangent!
The problem of being a car fanatic is that you just can't have them all!
I never had a Toyota, for instance, and yet I have liked every version of the Celica!
I never had a Nissan, although the 350 Z was a close call when I got my RX 8.....

Nope, these were my sports car days although I did have a new 1.6 mk 2 as a company car at one time!
Actually, thinking it through, I had a Mk 4 Cortina before that, in 1978 (very smart in Midnight Blue) so the Escort had to be about 1980.

Diva.....much though I love you, and your beautiful picture, it has not much to do with my thread!
No doubt we will now be seeing stunning scenic views, instead of motor cars, which is what this thread is (or was) all about!

doubleagent.....you don't have a photo gallery until you create it!
You need to first save your photos into "My Documents" or "Downloads" first.
Next open any thread (it doesn't matter at this stage) and click "Insert photo".
Now click "Upload Photo" and then "Add from my Computer".
Go to "My Documents" and double click the photo you want, then "Start Upload" and your photo will be there in your gallery.
Click "Finished" and it will say "Pending approval.
If it is not approved it will be taken down. When it is you can go to the thread you want to post it on, and click "Insert Photo".
Double click on the photo and it will appear in code ready for you to send.
I hope that's clear, as it took me ages to figure it out, because all the well meaning helpers left out too many of the processes, for it to work!

Yeah, I had to remind myself of what it looked like, and perhaps it was a decent car, but never in my thoughts!
On the other hand the P5 Coupe was pretty special! Like a "gentlemen's club lounge" on wheels!

I think this car carried politicians/civil servants etc around Whitehall before the Jaguar. I'm sure I remember John Nettles driving Harold Wilson's P5 in a documentary some years back.

That looks like a nice one as it's a relatively recent picture!
Not much use for anyone over 5'10" and/or with big feet (same as with My MX5)!
I had a drive in one of a workmates Midget. The thing I recall, on getting in, was the "beam" across the footwell which, having got my feet over, was still touching the back of my calves!

Must have been a bit difficult in 1974 going from E-type to Fiat 128
Yeah but the 128 was mainly for my wife, and I used it on some of my trips to Carlisle where we were developing some pubs into "Falstaff Steak Houses" on the lines of "Berni Inns".
The thing was that the motoring expenses were so generous, that I was "Quids in" with the Fiat, but only, kind of, level with the Jag.
The reason I'm back on here, is that I couldn't find my recent post, where there was much derision of my last too cars as being "hairdressers cars"
I said that next time I change I will ask for permission first.
Here is my current car which is fabulous with it's 3.2 V6 four wheel drive and DSG gearbox....
Here is the one I am "hovering" over.....
The only niggle is losing the 4x4 and DSG gearbox.
Life can be so difficult some times!

The BX was my first in black and I said I wouldn't get another one. The crazy thing is that the under coat was white so every little chip was accentuated.
When I got my RX-8 there was no question that it was going to be my only red car since '89 most of the ones in the brochure were red and looked so special.
When it came to it I didn't like the red at all and was hooked on the black one in the showroom.

"I've had a few of these over the years. A blue '67, a purple '74, a British Racing Green '70 and an orange '72".
So you like them then egg?
Actually,if you just like them for what they are, they're a bloody nice thing to keep and cherish!
Bonus points are zero depreciation, no RFL and black and silver plates.
Still didn't like that beam under my calves though.....

Only Mk 1s are the real thing. Repent Aunty or you know the thought police will be round.
Nice to see a good selection like that. Thankyou for posting it. My first new car was a 2ltr Gxl - It was like a rolls royce to me (a poor man's rolls I know). Superb gear shift compared to all the carp I had before that.
