I've never been overly impressed by the antics of Peter Tatchell, whether he's outing some insignificant MP or barging into the Archbishop of Canterbury's pulpit.
Frankly, I'd respect him more if he protested in mosques about the much greater intolerance displayed toward homosexuals by some Islamic leaders (an outrage that would demand far more courage), but I freely admit that I am even more pusillanimous than he is, and for legal reasons am prepared to out only the dead.
Thus it is that today, in this column, I reveal what has been common knowledge in showbiz circles for years, but has not, I believe, previously been stated in print. Namely that, despite being married, Ernie Wise was gay.
Of course, Ernie can hardly be blamed for not revealing that he was more Martha than Arthur, for he grew up in a less tolerant era, but thankfully, we now live in more enlightened times.

I enjoyed that programme even though when the credits rolled I noticed it was made in 2008.
He must have been gay, on reflection. He regularly shared a bed with Eric.
Ernie was certainly born with that happy gene. Happiness is a gay thing, did anyone notice if he clapped his hands in excitement? definite giveaway.

when you ask this question 'who were the 1st couple to appear on tv in bed together' they will say morecambe and wise because at the time any kind of straight sex on tv was frowned upon by the bbc.ah how the bbc must of laughed when they let 2 'straight guys' appear on tv.

I watched Bullseye on challenge today when the credits appeared at the end of the show it stated that it was from 1981, half of the contestants on it are probably deceased.
The 1970s would have been a very dark time without Morecambe and Wise

Wish they'd stop going on about how hugely popular they were because apparently 28m tuned into their xmas special,there were only 3 channels ffs probably the only alternative was sale of the century or a circus from vienna.

@akabula it was xmas - captive audience doubt many pubs were open xmas night,wildly over rated show,good old days syndrome i'm afraid.

The Mike Yarwood Show that immediately preceded the 1978 M&W Christmas Show got higher figures giving that the record, but that's just me being pedantic.

according to wikipedia, excluding films/sports/news etc, the mike yarwood christmas show of 1977 was the joint 20th most watched uk tv show in history.
the morecambe and wise show on the same day was the 24th most watched uk tv show in history. a bit picky saying it was a myth that it was very popular. clearly both shows were extremely popular at the time.

For many the M & W Xmas Show was the highlight of the festive season and that`s a fact.
