For what it's worth there's a world of difference between sitcom and standup, with panel show stuff somewhere in between.

Robert Webb, for example, is awful on panel shows, but very good in Peep Show/Mitchell and Webb Look/Ambassadors etc.

Probably the least broadcastable I've ever seen (although it WAS on TV) was Frank Skinner.
I sort of based the list on how much humour I have personally derived from each name.

Good question N-G, it didn't start off as long a list as it ended up and I got a tad carried away.

btw, I've left out Micky Flanagan. 5/10 quite good, can make me laugh, it remains to be seen if he'll still be a top name in say, 5 years.

Good to see Emo Phillips get such a high score, 8/10 is about right. I saw him years ago and he had all the audience in fits of laughter, totally unique.

I saw Micky Flanagan recently and although slightly disappointing from what I was expecting I still enjoyed the night - 6.5/10. Dara O'Briain is a different matter though, he was embarrassingly awful when I saw him in Hammersmith 1/10 for him.

Lenny Henry will be delighted with a 2/10. He was a 1.01 certainty to be 1/10.

Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld and Karl Pilkington are the current kings of comedy, and Ronnie Barker was superb as well.

Comedy is definitely the new 'rock n roll'.
There are loads of new comics and regularly seen panel show guests who have appeared since I did my appraisal.
Very few, if any, new comedy shows or comedy actors.

At some point I'll do a newer more updated version.
In the meantime, as there are SO many threads about comedians, here is the resurrection of some ranting ammunition.

Lots of omissions at the bottom end, which is ok, but one who should be at the topend is -

Chic Murray. Sadly very little to see on line.

All I could find was

Jim Jefferies a good stand up I've recently discovered.  his rant about guns getting lots of airing on social media atm, which put me on to some of his other stuff well good it is.

Jim Jeffries – Fully Functional.  Complete show.
Starts off with dumb coonts and their dumb coont children and their dumb coont religions and gradually gets more offensive.  Funny as, and it makes you think and sh1t.

Hate to say this but I saw Jimmy Cricket live some years ago and he was very very funny. Complete rubbish infantile jolks but he made everyone laugh which is what you want from a comic.

each to their own. imo peter cook is the best ever. as a child i loved tommy cooper and eric morecombe. i also really like bill hicks.

i absolutely detest jim davidson (although i pity him for what he went through). there was a time in the 80s when our family holiday was to bournemouth and we went to see davidson. he asked if there was anyone irish in the audience and i remember pleading with my dad not to put his hand up. he did anyway and jim told one of his unfunny paddy jokes. i will remember the embarassment til the day i die.

went to see ben elton in 87 and found him funny, not so funny when he was doing the same stuff years later. certainly dont find him funny now. was he ever funny? i thought harry enfield really captured the time with loadsamoney.

modern day macyntire (dont know how he spells it and dont care) is the least good by a mile. yet he makes a fortune.

Billy Connolly Surely the best stand-up ever. The mould into which most other comics have poured themselves. Material hasn’t stood the test of time.

Saw Lee Nelson last week and I haven't laughed as much in years.

As a proviso, I should add that I had drunk 4 pints of 5.9% Jaipur prior and had a pint of some local 5%+ ale in the interval.

And drank another one from a plastic glass during the second half.

Jack, they always do when you've had 8 pints.

I say, they always do when you've had 8 pints.

Does that answer both your questions?

Thank you,
That was one of the greatest appreciation posts of all time on any forum.
I am humbled.

I did the original of this about 9 years ago, I think.
Maybe a refreshed updated version with some of the newer names is in order.

Resurrected as it's being discussed.
It needs updating though. I'll be doing that later.

Times and tastes change, as well as new people who are not already included in the list.

Just to say, once again.
It is entirely subjective.
NO TWO PEOPLE WILL AGREE - I COMPLETELY REALISE SOME OF MYSCORES WILL BE ENTIRELY DIFFERENT TO SOME OF YOURS.

Gregor Fisher - must be the accent - genius as Rab C.
otherwise agree and would add Jimmy Tarbuck "Is that the one?" - Can't remember ever laughing at him.
Arthur Askey - his looks got him by. I'm a little Bee. Ashamed to say I laughed at him when young, still we all grow up.
