Some great stuff on this thread. Need to get myself along to Big Thief as well and seen Richmond Fontaine a couple of times. They were an excellent band.

I've got Will Varley (brilliant singer/songwriter), First Aid Kit, Elbow,  Arcade Fire, Angel Olsen, Manics, Ezra Furman, Asaf Avidan and Jack White lined up over the next few months. One or two days at All Points East are very tempting in the summer too.

I don't know how old you people are but you need to understand this. You go through phases in your life, and going to gigs is part of when you were young(er). Can you imagine yourself at Reading '79 and Tom Jones comes on? As Eminem said And Moby? You can get stomped by Obie You 36-year-old baldheaded ****, blow me! Report McCoy Carp February 2, 2018 9:35 PM GMT
FFs, they must be approaching 60 & in the case of Cheap Trick, I would of thought be in their 60's maybe pushing 70! That Cheap Trick guitarist was always a funny looking bloke, and the drummer, jeezers what must they be like now? Saw Cheap Trick when they supported Motley Crue sometime in the 80's @ the London Astoria. All I remember about that was paying £20 for tickets off of the touts which was a hell of a lot of money, the most I'd ever paid to see anyone, bearing in mind I found a ticket stub recently for a Whitesnake gig 1979 which cost £2.75. Seen Def Leppard, as well, or rather saw them perform one song, before getting drunk in the bar. Only really went to see Tesla who were supporting. Seen loads of bands, but last gig, probably FM, must of been over 20 years ago. I love my music more than ever, but short of Mark Reale and Guy Speranza coming back from the dead and reforming the original Riot there's no one i want to see. Rock stars do not age well and seeing them as have-beens is just plain depressing.
Report The Dragon February 2, 2018 10:08 PM GMT

Report McCoy Carp February 2, 2018 10:16 PM GMT
No, I just had a look. Plus you never had all this ticket agent nonsense when I first went to gigs, you dealt directly with the venue the band were playing either by post or queuing for tickets the day they went on sale if the band were popular.

I saw Eels at Brixton on Monday, they were as usual, very good.

I saw Billy Idol at Brixton the week before that and he was very good too. Put on a good old fashioned Rockstar performance and played all of his big numbers including King Rocker from his Generation X days.

The best of them all though, was David Byrne. His show was absolutely unforgettable - superb! All of us who went to the gig together said the same, one of the best gigs we'd ever been to and I urge you all to try and catch him if you get a chance!

Report pixie July 6, 2018 10:53 AM BST
Yep, he was great wasn't he? They did a jokey segment where he sneaks back on to the stage during an instrumental break and sets his weird instrument up and then he scarpers quickly when E comes back on - I'm sure they probably did the same thing at your gig.

I love Eels and think they're hugely underrated, they have become a very polished live act however I thought the Brixton audience could have been a little more responsive especially as they seem to have picked up more younger fans now than they had last time. I was surprised to see so many in the audience in their early twenties, it was the same for LCD Soundsystem earlier in the year too.

Morteh Mackem, Van the man was good but his music is sooo smooooooth I don't think it lends itself well to live music, more like late night hotel bars. He still has a fine set of lungs and there is no weak link in a superbly tight band - the piano/trumpet player was especially good (just looked him up and I think he's called Paul Moran). He is still very much Van the Man, though, absolutely superb but I would have to say Robert Plant was more fun and more to my taste. Van Morrison 9/10, Robert Plant 10/10.
