Report Get On MASSIVE October 17, 2013 9:35 AM BST
You're far better off eating the fruit and veg than juicing them. The juicing process removes the fibre although the macro and micronutrients still remain.

If you want to lose weight you'd be better off eating these food as you get far more satiety by eating them whole than consuming them in a liquid form.

Also try and keep the fruits to a minimum as they can be quite calorie dense, if you have to juice then try and use just veg.

I would say this only benefits people who have an unhealthy to moderate diet. It's better to substitute your unhealthy lunch with a veg drink but it's optimal to eat your veggies rather than drink them.
Report Roger De Bris October 17, 2013 10:09 AM BST
the fibre is v.important. Also helps slows down the digestion so the organs are not hit directly with the juice, putting less stress on the organs.

Honestly though guys, I would recommened juicing to anyone

Report Aunty Post October 17, 2013 2:51 PM BST
I got mine three years, or more, ago.

Like all things American it is not small, but it is fantastic!

There seriously isn't a drop of juice left in the fibre and here is the testament to that.....

I thought the maxim was to eat your fruit and drink your veg.

AP:I have the Jack LaLanne, Ive also had it a number of years and I find it a nightmare. It was always a massive messy job peeling and cleaning and Id get it everywhere and its an arse to clean.

I used to do loads at once and fill big tubs and leave in fridge, no way would I use it daily and have to clean that, but after a while the juice in the fridge had a head on it and put me right off.
I used to do oranges melons (that were like water the amount you get out of em) lemons and pinapples.

Has anyone ever tried beetroot?

im no scientist, so I don't know exactly how it works but it does make the drink into a smoothie, whereas your blender will just make it all mushy, its nothing like a blender, in how the the drink is.

I don't know if they are referred to as blenders or food processors tbh, it's just all marketing.
This bullet is identical to one of the parts of general food processors (the blender) only that the motor on the bullet is less powerful.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, just that it's only a blender marketed as a smoothie maker /juicer as far as I can see. The mechanism is exactly the same, centrifugal force and as they say 'cyclonic action'
The shape of the screw in jar where the fruit goes is just a longer version of a grinder mill that comes with food processors.

If I'm honest they have a bit of a cheek considering with food processors you get loads more stuff and more power for about the same price.
However, the point is you are happy using it so continue to enjoy it, just I'd guess most ppl have what that is if they own a processor.

This is my juicer

I've had it for about 5 years and it's still going strong.

I think the pulp could be a bit drier but it dues a good job and is really easy to clean.

I always put a plastic bag in the pulp chamber so that saves a lot of mess.

I then rinse all other removable bits under the tap then wash them up. They would go in a dishwasher if you've got one.

I nearly always add a couple of apples to my juice to sweeten it, and a bit of lemon and ginger.

Yummy Happy
Report dustybin October 17, 2013 9:52 PM BST
Yeah that's a conventional juicer, a machine that separates juice from pulp like the jack lalanne
It is messy and when you think about it you are actually throwing the best bit away.
With the blender you get the whole goodness but end up with a thicker smoothie.

I think the smoothie has gained in popularity in recent times with the advent of innocent and the acceptance that the peel etc contains most of the good stuff.

Its a bit gloopy tho
Report dustybin October 17, 2013 9:55 PM BST
There's a recipe book with the jack L that recommends using the pulp for cooking, something I'm too cool to partake in ofc.
I just get the pulp everywhere and after washing the juicer so many times the silver paint has all pealed off making it look tatty

It's a very good read.

But I prefer the concentrated hit you can only get from juices.

Yes, you need the fibre too but I eat plenty of whole fruits and veggies for that.

One smoothie I love is spinach and banana.

I chuck a bag of spinach leaves, a couple of bananas and some rice drink in the blender.

It really is delicious. I sometimes add some hemp oil from the Good Oil company Love and some grated creamed coconut.

as I say, I treat drinking my juice as part of my wellness programme and I call it 'medicine', I'm not drinking it for the pleasure but for the health benefits same as the fermented fish oil I take. one of the key things to look for is a machine that produces juice with no foam

foam = air in the juice

air in juice = short life due to oxidation

usually that will mean making a batch in the am one day and the pm the next day

I tend to drink a 300 to 400 ml glass 3 or 4 times a day

also, storing in the fridge lets any sediment settle and I don't like the sediment, not that there is much but still, prefer it totally clear

if you're taking it to work, get it really cold and put it in a Thermos flask to stay cold, or put the jar/jug in a fridge

warm temps and air destroy the juice quickly and it becomes unpleasant to drink and loses it's vitality so look after your juice, it is a live food and easily deteriorates

hi, yes, that's my machine for making green juice for medicine, it is slow though and you have to cut hard veg up into pieces, leaves are fine though, usual put something juicy like a bit of pineapple or pear in to help with the extraction,

I have a vertical one I use to get juice for drinks and cooking, like OJ for bucks fizz or beetroot juice for stews

it's much quicker but the juice isnt high quality

the high quality veg juice made by the slow juicer is 'medicine' for me, not drinking it for pleasure, often have brocoli, cabbage, kale, sprouts and all kinds in there, it is not the most pleasant, nearly always have celery too and I absolutely hate celery

but if I want some fresh orange juice to go in fizzy water, champagne or lemonade I use the fast machine which is easier to set up and wash, takes no time to make the juice but the quality is not anywhere near as good

think I'm gonna give this a go, I don't seem to eat nearly enough fruit and veg despite doing all my cooking fresh from scratch. Am I correct in thinking my 20 quid blender will be perfectly adequate for knocking up a glass each morning to replace breakfast? A drink for me has to be either very cold or very hot so it'll be a case of chucking a handful of ice in with it. I'm pretty dubious about feeling any benefits tbh but I'll give it a go.
Report Makybe_Diva December 30, 2013 5:21 PM GMT

Report alabaster crashes down December 30, 2013 5:31 PM GMT
thanks, excuse my ignorance but what exactly are the benefits of 'juiced' juice over 'blended' juice? Intuition would suggest that blended would actually be better for you assuming that a juicer merely removes some fibrous matter. Is it just a practical advantage i.e. a more palatable drink/less volume more nutrients etc?

I'm unlikely to stick with anything that could be termed 'serious'. Will a blended half pint every morning of mixed veg and fruit likely see any benefits?
Report Makybe_Diva December 30, 2013 5:43 PM GMT
With juicing you get a concentrated hit of all the good things from the veg. You wouldn't be able to drink enough blended veg to get the same benefit.

I only juice fruit to make veg juice taste nicer. Juiced fruit on its own is liquid sugar. Which isn't good.

I'll let Rick explain it properly.

If I try it might sound like gobbldegook even tho' I will know what I mean Confused

4  inches of cucunber
Half inch slice of lemon (unwaxed if possible, no need to peel)
1 inch chunk of fressh ginger.
(You can add a bit more of the lemon and ginger but I find that's enough for my taste).

Put it all through a juicer.

This will makes about 1 litre, depending on how efficient your juicer is.

Pour over ice if desired.

thanks, pretty obvious really I suppose. Oh well, I'll give the blended a go on the premise that something is better than nothing.

Alabaster, if you want to concentrate on just making green smoothies rather than juicing you might like to check out this book.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Green-Life-Victoria-Boutenko/dp/155643930X/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1388425765&sr=1-2&keywords=green+smoothies+victoria

I found it a really interesting read even tho' I prefer juicing.

in my humble opinion, juicing should be viewed a supplementary way to get high doses of powerful nutrients into the body rapidly, and should not be seen as a substitute for food

smoothies are entirely different and you could add oils, coconut, fruit, eggs, seeds, oats and all manner of stuff tosmoothies to turn them into a meal replacement

I don't do smoothies, I prefer to eat my food as it comes rather than mushed up
