This is an outstanding song, great lyrics and melody.

I'd forgotten how good Gilbert was, but with the resurgence of interest in him due to the Lottery ad I thought I'd investigated his back catalogue. He made some brilliant songs but this is my favourite. Pleased to note he's still active and touring.

Possibly the greatest love song ever written. Few of us have experienced hearts and flowers and Hollywood endings but we all feel love in some way for our families. Although love is seldom mentioned it's the little things like cups of tea, birthday cards or football games with the kids. Gilbert, you're a genius.

Hello KM...just got back from the boozer and you've prompted me to put on my 'Gilberto' playlist that I haven't heard for a while - it's a 'mood' thing (I've been blasting out a lot of Killing Joke recently ... the polar opposite of easy gear like Gilberto) but when in the right frame of mind to listen, he's very under-rated.

My fav's are Alone Again Naturally & Why Oh Why Happy

You've got to love the line in 'Why Oh Why' when he sings;

"It's seems that you're happy as long as I'm upset" Laugh

That's EXACTLY what they're like!

Alone Again Naturally is one of the best songs ever written. Very clever, very sad and very poignant. One of my favourites but don`t play it after you have done your nuts on the horses. Whoops

You see all these very average songwriters getting Brits,Ivor Novello's etc

Gary Barlow gets treated like some mastercraftsman..on the basis of what?

Not fit to wear one of Gilbert's tanktops imho Happy

''Nothing old, nothing new, nothing ventured,
Nothing gained, nothing still-born or lost,
Nothing further than proof, nothing wilder than youth,
Nothing older than time, nothing sweeter than wine,
Nothing physically, recklessly, hopelessly blind,
Nothing I couldn't say,
Nothing why 'cos today,
Nothing rhymed.

Or even better than Nothing Rhymed.......
In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less dire
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby spire
And climbing to the top will throw myself off
In an effort to make it clear to who
Don't know what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Where people saying, "My god, that's tough
She's stood him up,
No point in us remaining.
We may as well go home."
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
In a little while from now .....Wow..

'There is too much attention paid to people who believe
the world we live in really isn't round'
Much of his best work is generally unknown - on LP's but not charted.

Kenny - it's your fault I've been listening to this stuff for the last week or so Devil
Ivor - anything in particular from his 'secret' collection you'd recommend?

PS - listening to 'Ooh Wakka Doo Wakka Day' reminds me of one of my mates who's hopeless with women...I can't help but sing along to
"ooh whacking off every day" instead - he's not too happy about that Grin

Some of his stuff wasn't that easy for a beginner on a guitar, and that was why I served his music more than any other reason. He's talented, no doubt about that.

I loved his music and thought him a genius but hadn't listened to him in a while.
Because of this thread I listened to a few favourites. Found them really depressing to be honest. Sad

And looking back over the years
and whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty five years old
My mother, god rest her soul
couldn't understand why the only man
she had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
with a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
no words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally.

Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear this, even now.

My favourite Christmas present of all time was the fellas greatest hits way back when from my Grandpop and mop. At the time I was also into Pink Floyd, Deep Purple, Genesis, and The Doobie Brothers.

Gilbert O'Sullivan was the first "uncool" artist that I became a fan of.

Incredibly underrated. Shame he had to go through all of that garbage in court with the to$$ers who wouldn't pay him what he was deserved, but he got the money in the end.

And Peter Skellern.  'Hold On To Love' would make my all-time top 30.  Eating corned beef sandwiches in the something-or-other pub in the Hay Market, Newcastle, with this on the Juke Box.  Annie the bar-tenderess adding a gob of extra-love to each roll.

He did a cover of the great Jolson number, "About A Quarter To Nine". Not as good as Al, but a good attempt.

Just listening to Superfly, Curtis Mayfield.  Very much of the same time.  When black men were beginning to assert themselves culturally.  To add to their innate advantages.

Skellern must still be wowing them on the Yorkshire tea-dance circuit.
