Yes.
My best mate who I used to go fishing with, CJ, was attacked and killed with a machete outside our school gates (Kidbrooke School). A 15 year old boy from Thomas Tallis school was locked up indefinitely. He's already out apparently ![]() It was in the news quite extensively at the time. My mum always said seeing the inconsolable grief of all the kids will never leave her. |

Treble
When I was about 30 my mate's brother hung himself 2 weeks before his 20th birthday. Desperate to see his school mates at the funeral, totally bewildered but trying to support each other. |

Can't think of anyone, in the entire school, but I guess it's likely that someone did, out of 1,100 pupils over five years or so!
Having said that, five committed suicide not long after! |

My oh my, how things have changed"
No black, Asian, or any other such at my school. We did have a kid who moved up from London, but that's as bad as it got! |

A lad in the year below (aged 11 or 12) was canoeing in the sea at Redcar with his scout troop. Capsized at least twice, and died in hospital from exposure. That was back in 1980 or 81. His scout master was our next door neighbour, and the lad was a really good egg.

I vividly remember seeing my first "Black" person.
He was massively tall, and black as coal (probably a Zulu). I was with my dad, who was a man of few words. He just said "That's a black man"! |

400 in my senior school in east London (1963-67)
398 indigenous whites and One Indian boy, Iftakhar Saraf - good cricketer. One Chinese boy, Richard Lee - no idea what he was good at. Girls outnumbered boys by 2:1 You should see the same school these days. For starters, they are all known as 'grapes' because the uniform is now purple ![]() I found out last week that the govt. pays £900 per pupil to a school, when the pupil registers for free school meals. And some schools say 'You should register, and we get the money, whether you eat it or not.' My old school must be minted. |

A classmate of my older brother was murdered though I can't remember the exact details. Not sure they ever convicted anyone either. |

1500 puils at my school and no deaths, quite a few teachers popped their clogs though. It was always the good guys as well and not the Jekyll ones.

why are people mentioning people who were in their 20's, 30's and 40's when they died? It's a school mates thread!
BTW my granny passed away in the 1970's (aged 67), so did my grandfather (aged 73), then my mates uncle (aged 42) car crash......... |

Apologies for the errors Ivor ... I could have sworn it was winter time ... I have just looked at the schools website ,she is on the School Photo for 1971 so granted I may have the year wrong ... She did die during term time because I seem to recall the Head saying something at morning assembly ... The accident happened on the downhill road towards Sandiacre from Long Eaton ( the road that passes under the A52 ) ... She used to live on Curzon Street.

(Absolutely NO need to apologise Franky - just put that up for your interest - trying to be helpful)!
Mine was in junior school 1960's. Extremely rare to have a black boy a in small Welsh village primary school - but we did and he was my friend. I don't know the details as the adults didn't talk much about such matters in those days - but I know he was seriously ill and his Dad helped him 'on his way'. I think Dad had some nominal punishement for his trouble. Tragic for that family. |

Remember coming back to school after the summer holidays and the teacher told us that John Boon had died....epileptic fit I think . Some kid in another class hit a lamp post and was killed instantly on one of those fs1e death traps....
