Report desperatemunter June 20, 2013 1:38 AM BST
his Tony Soprano was great - they didn't do the easy thing and play him as a 'villain with a heart of gold' - and he wasn't : up close he was an insensetive arrogant pig.   Which is probably a lot more realistic.
Report Jack Bauer '24' June 20, 2013 1:42 AM BST
Very sad, he has a nine month old daughter.

Munter that was the brilliance of the show. We saw it from Tonys side and were offered the opportunity to like him and sympathise with his family set up  but he and Carmella were vile people.
Report spellingandgrammarchecker June 20, 2013 2:08 AM BST
so this is an ok RIP thread is it Dobbo?

RIP James.
Report Dobbo June 20, 2013 2:14 AM BST
Why would a bloke who was alive twelve hours ago want to be encouraged to rest in peace? And in my view a frowny face as a gesture of regret to a death is an insult. If your mum has just died would you consider a card with a frowny face a meaningful mark of respect or sorrow?
No this is not an ok RIP thread but I am sorry to hear that JG has died.
Report spellingandgrammarchecker June 20, 2013 2:20 AM BST
Well, he's going to RIP because he's dead. Unless of course there's no life after death in which case he won't RIP. RIP threads do no harm just in case we do RIP when we're dead.
Report Petrus Romanus June 20, 2013 4:34 AM BST
You should see the coverage CNN are giving this...unbelievable...fair enough he died at a very early age but making it the Breaking News story on every single segment (A Cooper, Piers M, etc etc) and devoting pretty much the whole day to it sucks...there's real news out there somewhere...gimme that ffs.

Report Angel Gabrial June 20, 2013 8:11 AM BST
Gandolfini grew up in Park Ridge and graduated from Park Ridge High School in 1979, where he played basketball and acted in school plays.[8] He was awarded the title "Class Flirt" in his senior yearbook.

Stellar performance in the quality drama that was The Sopranos.

RIP
Report Tex AxiLe June 20, 2013 11:38 AM BST
He has been my "Avatar" for a good while, my favorite part was as the  murderous hood in True Romance, such menace and onscreen presence . The Sopranos was in my opinion the best TV series to come out of the USA , 51 is so young ,a loss to the TV and movie industry. A sad day
Report moisok June 20, 2013 11:52 AM BST
Never heard of him  - young to die at that age - very sad.
Report SqueezeFirmly June 20, 2013 1:28 PM BST
Never heard of him?

Hard to believe.

If you like crime dramas, get a box set of The Sopranos, or rent them somewhere. It's about 94 hours of viewing.

------------------------------------------------------

He insists that he was nothing like the mobster he portrayed.  In real life he considered himself a '260 pound version of Woody Allen' and after his success with the Sopranos, said 'Make that 295 pounds'
Report Angry Monkey June 20, 2013 1:35 PM BST
Yes, apparently he despised violence with a real aversion to it and it made him feel very uncomfortable, which makes his role in the Sops even more impressive.
Report brain dead jockeys June 20, 2013 1:36 PM BST
best sceen was when he threw the newspaper at carmello telling her she should have put the money she made from the house she sold on some american football team...........that was hilarious.

Report Angel Gabrial June 24, 2013 8:44 AM BST
I watched the first episode again last night.

It seemed poignant that amongst other things it focused on his Tony having seizures which had made him more aware of his own mortality and the need to to hold on to his family - in the analogy of his love for the family of ducks who past by.

Reading some of the obits it seemed he didn't take himself too seriously and shunned the celebrity limelight,a refreshing change from most of the gushing"luvvies" we have to tolerate.

Report Hound-Dog-2 June 24, 2013 4:20 PM BST
seen this on another thread:

"Before James Gandolfini had a heart attack and died this week, he wolfed down a large fried meal of fried prawns in mayonnaise chilli sauce and then ordered a second portion, also had a large portion of foie gras, he also downed 2 rounds of pina colada - each with 2 rum chasers on the side, followed by 2 beers........then collapsed in his hotel room 3 hrs later !"

heart attack at 51, no age, but eating and drinking like that.....not exactly a healthy way to live.
Report PatraTheCat June 24, 2013 4:27 PM BST
It's quite a fun way to live though. Fair play to anyone who prefers 50-odd years of boozing and lard to 70-odd years of salad.

With the exception of the foie gras (poor geese/ducks), I respected him even more after I read about his final meal.

I've just ordered series 6 of The Sopranos (both parts), from Amazon.

I'm still on series 5 but thought I'd buy series 6 now as they are selling fast.

All the other series I bought on eBay for bargain prices.

Don't know what I'll do with myself when I haven't got anymore Sopranos to watch.

Report pixie June 25, 2013 8:14 PM BST
One of the few series that I could watch all over again and still enjoy, that and Romanza Criminale.
