Went to bureau de change in Marks and Spencer, gave cashier a £50 note, she claimed it was a forgery and refused to give it back even though i only wished to check it myself, 3 minutes later PC plod turn up and escort me in view of everyone to a side room. They also refuse to let me check it in case i ate it. It was deemed a forgery as it didn't pass the pen check which left a florescent mark on the note. They asked me a million and one questions before 10 minutes later security come back and say the cashier made an error and used a highlighter pen. A few sorrys later and off you go.

Do i have grounds to for compo?

Well, you were detained against your wishes. Your money was impounded and you suffered the embarrassment of being taken into police custody (to all intents and purposes) in full view of the other customers, some of whom may have recognised you.
This would have been fair enough if the note was a forgery because they could return it to you by law. This might have been considered fair treatment if the note had shown up as only possibly dodgy. But the crux of the problem here is the total incompetence of M and S in carrying out the specified checks in a professional manner. I would have thou8ght that the 'forged' note should have been checked by a supervisor prior to setting setting off the 'red alert' system.

A proper apology and some small compensatory offer should be the least of their actions.

at the very least write to the store manager and see what they say, if they do not fawn all over with apologies threaten the crap out of them, write to HQ, press, see a lawyer

they messed up not checking the note correctly and need to show that they are sorry

be interested to hear what happens, but I would not put up with Plod being called

Nobby, I've had a thought. The larger these companies are, the more they are scared of the management level above them. Send an E-mail to the man at the top at M+S, and lay it on really thick about your public humiliation at the hands of their incompetent staff. The complaint will filter all the way down from regional manager, store manager, department manager etc, and they will all be **** themselves cos it's come from the very top. If you don't get any compo, you will get the satisfaction that some major rollikings have been handed out.

your avin a larf aint ya!
I WAS a store manager for the big companies for 30 years.
Even if you could get a mail address for 'top man' he'd never get to see it! M+S probably have 1 million customers a day of which 1% complain about something or other. and not all genuine. They have a small army of staff in the 'Customer Services' department with a library of standard letters to choose from and thousands of previous to compare with. If you die on the premises or lose a limb you may be honoured with a 'personal' letter if you're lucky.
IF you write to HO FIRST -they would generally send a standard letter acknowledging your contact and forward your letter to the store manager. As a store manager - if a comliant got past the supervisors and assistant manager to me - I'd probably give my AM a 'dressing-down' for bothering me with such trivialities.
OP should write to Store Manager and he'll get a polite letter and a gift voucher for this very MINOR incident.
The lowly member of staff who made the original error has probably not made this error before and almost certainly will never make it again. She will be spoken to but not discplined - though they may tell you so to pacifyh the complainant.

I would not have been happy to put it mildly and would definitely kick up a fuss. Having said that if you get a gift voucher for £100 that would seem about right so not worth spending too much time on really.

If he's polite and sensible I may be moved to £20 at a push but other than that pass it on to the anonymous advisors Bodrum and Gumbet in HO. (we do/did occasionally phone HO out of earshot to seek advice if necessary).
Right I'm off - I have mosques to attend.

Anybody you speak to will be authorised to bung you 20 quid as a sorry.

That's the standard 'go away'.

To be honest, as procedure clearly wasn't followed and the plod were called in, I'd say you have a case for a bit more.
Tops a ton  reckon, don't forget £100 quid voucher only actually costs them the cost of the goods.
They should have been very careful before calling plod and it's a procedural failure, not a staff error.

One thing though, they didn't actually detain you did they ?

A year ago i popped into a clarks shoe shop in a shopping centre. Tried on a shoe but then left to meet up with my wife in Debenhams which was about 200 metres away in the other side of the shopping centre. Went up the elevator in Debenhams and two out of breath employees from Clarks ran up behind me and out of breath said give the shoes back. They had followed me the whole way from Clarks thinking i had stolen a pair of their shoes. Did not know what to even say.
As it happened i was wearing a new pair of clarks shoes which i bought the previous day from another store and it still had a sticker on the sole.

Sounds  to me like gross incompetence which has caused you considerable embarrassment
in which  case you should contact a solicitor or a tabloid..
The  thing I find disturbing is that the cashier must be constantly testing notes ...
So was this a ruse to defraud you ?

Get a ladder to the shop sign.

Take the '&' out between M & S

Put in an 'O'

then put QUE on the end

That should stop it happening again

They cater for all ages.

I got plenty of good shoes from the Clarks factory outlet in Kendal, Cumbria.

Nobody in junior school has feet the same size as mine Laugh
