A police cordon was put up in Morden today after a serious incident.
The incident took place in Aberconway Road, at the one-way system around Merton Civic Centre, and there is a police cordon around Morden police office and Ladbrokes bookmakers.
Two independent residents have said they heard the incident was a "stabbing", but this is yet to be confirmed by police.

Extraordinary to think that Cyril Stein, the hardest-nosed, most cynical and most profit-driven boss of any bookmaker in his day, said that if one of Ladbrokes' shops couldn't be profitable with two members of staff at all times, then it shouldn't be open.

The local Ladbrokes who my mate is the manager, opens on her own, gets a cashier between 1 and 6 and closes on her own. Her husband sits in the shop in the evening to look after her.
Such a shocking thing that happened today and my deepest sympathies to the man's family. You go to work to earn a crust and end up paying the ultimate price. So very sad.

(but surely the police should be questioning ladbrokes, dont see many banks single manned do you) this is a company who bar winning customers, there only concern is there FOBTS, they shove young females into single manning (womaning if you like) then they have the bare faced nerve to pretend they care.......... THESE PEOPLE ARE PURE SCUM, never mind, as long as Richard Glynn got his bonus, of course you care ladbrokes !

Possibly got more to do with the removal of bandit screens than single manning? unless he was stabbed out in the shop sticking papers up or filling up slip dispensers.

Even if screens are not the issue in this case, all shops should have them.
When a manager is there on his own on dark winter nights, the coonts at the top of the tree are settled in in a comfy chair watching television.
If you had 5 people in one factory working in unsafe conditions, Health and Safety would go apesh1t.
The bastards at the top of this game know they have staff over a barrel, as industrial action in one or two shops will mean fack all, they will just bring in relief staff.
It's about time ALL BETTING SHOP STAFF stuck together and said 'You have two weeks to get us screens, or we don't open.'
They can't possibly sack them all, and for every one they did sack, there should be an unfair dismissal case.
Alternatively, they walk out and claim for constructive dismissal.
And people slag off unions ffs.
It's the lack of a union that keeps these staff unsafe.

I was in a will hill today and asked the manager whether it was one man working. It was and I asked him about the absence of screens. He said that head office deemed the town to be safe. Yeh, right, there has murders, rapes etc in the last year.
I was made redundant many, many years ago from my usual job when the company moved to wales and I did not want to go. I had a fair settlement package so I thought I would treat myself and work in a bookies with my first love of horseracing. I started off as a cashier but was quickly promoted to head office. However, when I worked as a cashier before the start of horseracing the manager who was supposed to working with me was always down the pub! But I do not remember being frightened of being on my own. It was different times in those days. I do not think that there was one man working in those days. I would not work in the same shop today on my own.

When I was a manager, I was there all day. The only time I left the shop was to go to the bank. Mind you, this was in the days before lots of night racing.
Iirc, the only evening meetings were at Alexandra Park in London, and I used to leave the blower on al night for punters to listen to at the letterbox. The law was made by The Home Office that all betting shops should be closed by 6-30 p.m.
This means that the big bookies got the law changed to suit them.

managed for Ladbrokes got out when the evening racing kicked off .now u have the added attraction of dealing with lunatics who have done their brains on the roulette ,smashing machines up etc ,staff are little more than security guards looking after the money, very rarely go into shops these days cant stand the places tbh..

The problem with these rancid firms, is that if the staff do go on strike, they can sack them, and get a retard in to do the job. Not being disrespectful to the staff but, if all you have to do is put a bet through a till, when placing it or settling it and emptying the FOBT'S.Then anyone can do it... the poor guy who died had been there 15 years i read, i bet he went on a settling course, and knew about betting as well, unlike the staff they employ nowadays.

More money overnight in the shops now these wretched FOBT's have taken over, and in turn attracting all the vermin that normally hang around those town centre amusement arcades, that nobody can understand how they turn over a profit, but this is because they are often a front for something else. This in turn bound to make them more of a target. Single manning busy shops after 8 o'clock is a disgrace, doesn't matter who you are, you need eyes in the back of your head when you come out from behind the counter. Sh1te wages in the main being paid to those merely in need of a job and with no career ambition whatsoever, working for parasites who in the main don't give a fukc. Over 75% of betting shops these days seem absolute soulless cesspits. RIP indeed.

Have every sympathy with the staff but they do need to get a backbone as they accept everything Head Office throws in their direction.
The District or Area Manager usually decides what shop is safe re single manning which is a ridiculous situation. When I worked for Joe and they asked me to single man I flatly refused and phoned the Health n safety dept of the local council.Chap visited and agreed on my stance, so you then had the situation of me refusing and everyone else as usual bending over, everyone needs to unite.

Not everyone is gonna' have the balls to go with that though, nortons - Especially younger staff, who of course are fully aware of how disposable they are. When I left Corals, I said to my Area and District Managers that no way should the shop be managed in the evenings by a woman on her own. My deputy at the time was only a 22 year old, and she was asked to act up as manager on my leaving. Within ten days, she got jumped when locking up. Wasn't injured, but was roughed up a bit.

Proper union representation would ensure the fitting of bandit screens and the cessation of single manning, for a start.
Plenty of states in the US have the death penalty and/or 100 year sentences. The same states have mass shootings in schools.
clive, you might at least garner a modicum of respect on the forum if you just confessed to being a front man for whichever firm of "booomakers". That and your ultra right views are so painfully obvious.

They took the screens down in the interest of customer service ,no doubt some fooking rsole in a head office thought it would be a good idea so as you can communicate with the customers on more friendly terms ,when I worked for ladbrokes it was suggested staff struck up converstaions with customers regarding sporting events I.e a football match that might be on that night ,you were then supposed to bring the conversation around to a betting market that might be available on the match I.e correct score market, in the hope the dopey bastard you have just been talking to would place a bet, you really cannot make it up how low some of these companies can get ,and the shyte is left for the shop staff to deal with .... I would imagine with the FOBT and cartooon racing every minute things are a lot worse than they were in my day ...

Last time I went into a Ladbrokes shop in east London was about 2001.
It was a big shop with plenty of people in there as it was a Saturday morning. There was a group of 7/8 men playing roulette on an FOBT, and the display said that they had over £800 in there.
I was in there for about 15 minutes talking to a few mates, and at first the group on the FOBT were cheering, I assumed they had winning numbers. But when I left they had £4 left in the machine, and none of them had been to the counter to be paid. After I lweft , an argiemnt broke out . None on the locals knew what it was about as they were all shouting at each other in an eastern european language.
The Ladbrokes shop in Wisbech is going to become a 'one man shop', but in this instance, the manager is a woman, and she has had to call the police on numerous occasions, when drunks go in there for a kip in the afternoon when they have no work from the local employment agencies. She has no safety screens in there, neither did the shop in London.
Nobody cares, until they get robbed.

To make it compulsory for high street bookmakers to have 2 members of staff present during opening hours
Responsible department: Department for Business, Innovation and Skills
To Properly regulate the betting industry in regard to staff, to acknowledge that staff have a right not to work in fear , alone , at any time of the day. "Single manning" should be outlawed as a work practice, that a shop should be closed if 2 members of staff are not available. There should be no "opt in" to any single manning policy so bookmakers have no way of bullying staff into "opt in" schemes , making them over time, compulsory practice.

I used to work for Hills 20+ years ago and was robbed once at gunpoint and twice outside the shop at knifepoint all in the space of around 12 months, (once going to the bank and once it appeared I was going to the bank but I wasn't) so this has bought back memories. I guess I was unlucky, but it was a shop perfect for robbing as you had a quick getaway onto the North Circular and there was a particularly long walk, secluded in parts, to the bank. I actually went on a lads holiday with a Ladbrokes manager who used to work in South East London and whom I haven't seen for about 10 years. I recall his 30th birthday party and reconciled that made him 54 not 55.
I know betting companies generally treat their shop staff not well at all, but I don't have a problem with single manning at quiet times in quiet shops. I'd be more concerned by the lack of bandit screens as I was threatened twice in my youth, and the screens at least gave me piece of mind. The shop itself should close for good. It's not fair for anyone to work with that atmosphere hanging over their head.

Police arrest man over Andrew Iacovou murder
By GRAHAM GREEN 4:23PM 30 MAY 2013 racingpost.com
DETECTIVES investigating the murder of Ladrokes betting shop manager Andrew Iacovou arrested a 21-year-old man in east London on Thursday morning.
He was taken to a south London police station, where he will remain in custody while inquiries continue.
Father-of-three Iacovou, 55, who had worked for Ladbrokes for more than 20 years, was bludgeoned to death at around 8.30am last Saturday when alone at his shop in Aberconway Road, Morden, in what is believed to have been a botched robbery attempt.
A Justgiving page set up for the benefit of his wife and children has already raised more than £16,000. To donate to the fund visit justgiving.com/AndrewIacovou.
The shop, which stands next door to Morden neighbourhood police office that was unmanned at the time of the murder, remains closed. Ladbrokes spokesman Ciaran O'Brien said there were no immediate plans to re-open the shop.
