Some great wresting on a Saturday afternoon in the 60's and 70's including 3 Bradford lads. Dennis Mitchell, Jim Breaks (whom I both met) and the great Les Kellett.
Report moisok May 22, 2013 3:58 PM BST
I absolutely hate wrestling  but you have to smile at these 'ladies'   ha ha!!!!
Report artie May 22, 2013 4:03 PM BST
Amazing how old some of these guys were at the height of their fame .If alive today Les Kellet would be 98 !
Report kenny mann May 22, 2013 4:12 PM BST
indeed, Les was born just a mile from me. Used to train with Alan Dennison. Pound for pound I reckon Les was the toughest of the lot.
Report artie May 22, 2013 4:18 PM BST
The best of the lot by a long way was heavyweight Bill Robinson.
Report kenny mann May 22, 2013 4:24 PM BST
i said pound for pound
Report artie May 22, 2013 4:24 PM BST
I saw Kellett v McManus in Leeds.Kellett "slipped" entering the ring and "banged " his head .He spent the rest of the bout hobbling around the ring like a man in a daze, with blood pouring down his face. The acting was tremendous.
Report artie May 22, 2013 4:25 PM BST
Pound for pound,I'd still go for Robinson.
Report kenny mann May 22, 2013 4:27 PM BST
the match between Les and Leon Arras (actor Brian Glover) was tremendous fun not without skill. Here it is. Both very funny guys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_zPH3u65H8
Report artie May 22, 2013 4:35 PM BST
Some of the guys who were good amateurs,Robinson,Joyce,Dempsey etc.would forget the showbiz, and actually wrestle competitively for a couple of rounds, before going back to the "script".

I can suddenly hear my late mother: "Ooh, I 'ate that bloody Mick McManus. 'E's 'orrible!"

Staggering to discover he was actually a couple of years older than her.

"Not the ears!"

He and his tag team partner Steve Logan were the ugly men of the ring
Report a bitofinterest May 22, 2013 9:26 PM BST
men wanted to be him

and women wanted to hit him with their handbags
Report 718 May 22, 2013 9:31 PM BST
Men wanted to be him?

He was a barrel chested fella with a bad wig and a bad attitude who used to wrestle around in a pair of oversized blue underpants in his mid 50s

I don't think I ever wanted to be him
Report a bitofinterest May 22, 2013 9:41 PM BST
99.999 per cent of men wanted to be him

93 is an incredible age, he was a household name in his day. The wrestling was extremely popular back then. Giant Haystacks, Big Daddy, Kendo Nagsaki, Rollerball Rocco and of course Catweazle.

Here is Mick McManus versus Catweazle.

McManus always looked very young for his age - he wrestled till he was 61!

Also, very lucky to keep that jet black hair.
