If she hadn't sorted the union LEADERS out(not the workers),the UK would now be a basket case.hth.
Report collywobble April 8, 2013 3:42 PM BST
My dad and his dad were miners. My uncles were all miners.

I understand that Scargill had to be defeated, but the glee she took in doing so and her complete disregard for the consequences in mining communities was despicable.

That and her 'Loadsamoneee' policies that further marginalised wrecked communities in the North. Some areas still haven't recovered.
Report Cubanpete April 8, 2013 3:42 PM BST
But she did sort the union leaders out and the UK is now a basket case.

I don't see what your point is.
Report Roquebrune April 8, 2013 3:46 PM BST
The UK is not a basket case. The entire world is in financial trouble, caused by bankers and it is a recent problem, not from anything Thatcher did.hth
Report Geesyerdosh April 8, 2013 3:52 PM BST
Not from anything Thatcher did Laugh

It was her decision to give the banks carte blanche to do what the hell they wanted. HTH
Report Roquebrune April 8, 2013 3:53 PM BST
Are you saying that Thatcher controlled every bank in the world?
Report judorick April 8, 2013 3:54 PM BST
yes let's not let millions of people collectively bargain for a better life

no, let's have all the power and decision making in the hands of a fw walthy types, often foreigners, and let's subsidise poverty pay with benefits and then let's vilify those people living on poverty pay in insecure jobs for having the cheek to claim benefits just to keep a roof over their heads...

working people who support the Thatcher ideology need to wake up and see where all the power, decision making and money went since she was PM - all in the hands of a tiny minority and there is fack all any of you/us can do about it

we have bankers laundering billions for drug lords (not even a single criminal charge brought), fixing interest rates and crashing the economy yet still getting huge bonuses, FTSE 100 CEOs pay rising 49% since the crash and pretty much the top 1% doing whatever the fack they want

this is the Thatcher legacy. Welcome to serfdom in the 21st century
Report Pandorica April 8, 2013 3:56 PM BST
She was the first leading politician in his country to disregard the trade balance. As soon as she consigned the crucial importance of those figures to the bin, the long term wealth of the nation was put in jeopardy. The banking crisis occurred as a result of the deregulation Thatcher encouraged by the way.

Report STUDYFORM April 8, 2013 4:18 PM BST
Just for now, roquebrune, assume I'm not an idiot and my reasons are considered, many and justified.
I have to go to work soon, and I could -seriously- write pages about my thoughts on the subject of Thatcher and the things she did.
Much of it has been written before by me and others (Golfjudge, judorick, rock monkey, pandorica, bentley boy and many more).

Maybe, another day, I'll write it down, and get the same nonsense back from the same people who always respond.
But, I'll need to be in the mood.

I never assumed you were an idiot,STUDY.Have you got a persecution complex,or are you just Mr Angry?
Report alun2005 April 8, 2013 4:21 PM BST
It was absolutely necessary that Thatcher curbed the ludicrous levels of union power that brought Britain to its knees in the 1970s.

A lot has been written and romanticised for decades about how Thatcher did eventually defeat the unions, but could she have actually won though without the huge scale support of an even bigger army of licensed thugs in blue uniforms?
Report Bridgeboy April 8, 2013 4:23 PM BST

If she hadn't sorted the union LEADERS out

funny
the unions are about to strike back in a BIG way
Report judorick April 8, 2013 4:29 PM BST
it's the inevitable response from Thatcher supporters

assumptions that people who disagree are poor, stupid, badly educated, Northern, have a chip on their shoulder, are rabid communists and traitors and any other number of lies, falsehoods and besmirchments

the only argument they have is 'they sorted the Unions out'

well look how that worked out for millions of ordinary people now living from hand to mouth at the whim of global capital, one pay cheque away from destitution in many cases and the majority could not survive 3 months without pay

Thatcher years really worked ut well for society with the underclass, disenfranchisement, loss of collective bargaining, global capital moving jobs when it suits them (800 jobs from Southampton to Turkey the other week for example)

Sky TV, mobile phones and all rest are just a distraction from the fact millions have been sitched up
Report the bairn April 8, 2013 4:32 PM BST

Thatcher was also fooked off by the very same party and people who are weeping and gnashing and wailing now. The reason they fooked her off? was she was immensely unpopular

do you mean popular votes?

79 conservative 13,697,923, 43.9%
83 conservative 13,012,316, 42.4%
87 conservative 13,760,935, 42.2%

97 labour 13,518,167, 43.2%
01 labour 10,724,953, 40.7%
05 labour 9,552,436, 35.2%

I was going by approval rating polls. Fair play, the popular vote in general elections she wins, except for 97.
Wilson in 64 got 44.13% and 48.0% in 66, MacMillan 49.4% in 59, Attlee 49.7%, so she was hardly anything out of the ordinary in general elections historically, even post war

Chose the approval ratings as thy were the reason she was kicked out of sobbing from No. 10, where as Blair chose when to go
