I think Neil Young's cover of Ferry's original of Like a Hurricane is much better.

Missed this thread first time around - Roxy and Ferry always been favourites of mine and no surprise to see so many different songs picked by people here.
Three and Nine from Country Life is my personal choice at the moment but could be one of many others tomorrow.

Still play them everyday in the car.

Brian Eno  later went on to do a couple of classics as well.

As I said earlier in this thread, almost 2 years ago, EVERY record collection would benefit from a copy of "For Your Pleasure", "Stranded" and "Siren".

As a small treat for those who might not be greatly familiar with the first era of Roxy (72-75), I am going to offer up a terrific track from each of their first 5 albums.

"Remake/Remodel" (1972 from "Roxy Music" album)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-zSnO7sbXg

Incidentally, the debut album is far from the "legendary" and "timeless" recording that we forever read about in the media. It's actually their worst album by far, but still a lot better than most debuts.

"Beauty Queen" (1973 from "For Your Pleasure")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAOFDI83OwE

Ferry used to say this was his fav RM album, and a certain Stephen Patrick Morrissey rated it as the best British album according to one of those '100 Best Albums' features. (That was all before he started to loathe Ferry of course). I could have picked any of the 8 songs within, but "Beauty Queen" still resonates, a song written about Ferry's ex-g/f Valerie Leon. Men of a certain age like myself, and Hai-Karate wearers will recall her well.

"Mother of Pearl" (1973 from "Stranded")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cjR5QHFpEo

Exit Eno, enter Eddie Jobson. Roxy Music became a better band with the replacement of Eno btw, and don't swallow any nonsense you may have heard to the contrary. This is probably their best album in terms of sheer end-to-end quality and inspirational moments, and "Mother of Pearl" is quite possibly the apex moment. I was given this album on Xmas morning 1973 and still enjoy playing it.

"Bitter Sweet"  (1974 from "Country Life")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W73AVb7u_9Q

I'm not convinced this album has aged quite as well as the previous two, although the sleeve certainly has. The songs are still mostly great though.

"End of the Line" (1975 from "Siren")

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEhGStkWLAU

This record marked the end of the first great era, and what a peak to go out on. As Ferry remarked, it has the energy of the first 2 albums, and the professionalism of the remainder. And I could write a 15 page thesis about the sleeve alone.

Thank me later for these wise words.
