Brilliant comedy. Just watching the inflatable dolls episode. Seriously why dont we have any good family(this episode not the best example of family tbf) comedies anymore. We have lots of good modern comedies still... Alan partridge, the office, inbetweeners etc.. But not many that are good for the whole family. My Family and outnumbered are both crap by the way so they dont count.
Rodney: Trigger what are you doing here? Trigger: Well Dave, Del Boy said he'd give me a lift down the pub. Rodney: Oh I suppose that's... Hold on, you live closer to the pub then we do? Trigger: Yeah I know, but Del Boy said he'd give me a lift down the pub. Rodney: But Trigger, you've had walk past the pub to get to our flat! Trigger: I know, but Del Boy said he'd give me a lift down the pub.

I quite liked the Royle Family. Surely that counts as northern.
But yes, OFAH is my favorite of all time and I am the forum expert on it. Others will attest to that.

Saw Bewes on one of the cookery programmes last year, cannot remember which one but he was invited within a group of people for an afternoon tea may well have been masterchef, but he looked so ill & extremely old & frail

There was a whole thread about that masterchef appearance. He is pretty old tbf, but there is a difference between looking old and looking unwell.... And he looked unwell.

He was within a group of people being fed by someone in some competition, I don't think he was even mentioned by name but it was a shock to see him, looked like he had aged 40 years since I last saw him

I think til death us do part is hilarious, shame the beeb wont show it anymore. Some comedies dont pass the test of time imo, men behaving badly is a case in point, loved it as a youngster, but not now.

Just started watching the first series, made me think a good quiz round would be the first lines of famous sitcoms. Go on then treble... What is the first line of the first episode of ofah?

You are an expert for sure treble. They were defo finding their feet in the first series. Half not sure what they were trying to do, half trying to put a marker down. Series 2 to five are almost faultless though imo.

Yeah, series 1, particularly Big Brother, was weak. Everything seemed too wooden and as you say, they seemed to be forcing their lifestyle down the viewers throats. To me, and many fans, Series 6 was amongst the strongest.
So many classic moments. Fall through the bar, blow up dolls, The Groovy gang, The seance and more.
For second to second laughs, Friday 14th was a very solid episode. Every other line was funny.

If you speak to Friends fans, many will agree that it went downhill badly when Monica and Chandler got together.
It wouldn't have been so bad if the women had comic talent, but thy didn't. Marlene miles above them in sitcom acting stakes.

Series seven was worse, every episode involved rodney and casandra arguing, not great tv imo. But still had its moments... Like alberts pretend shock three times, or was that a christmas special? Still think John Sullivan had a touch of genius about him, i mean some sitcoms are inevitable insomuch as sooner or later there was bound to be a sitcom made about it... The office,(the office), fawlty towers(hotel), porridge(prison).. Etc. who would have thought up a young kid and a flashy market trading older brother living with their grandad in a council flat in south london... And done it so well.

Yes they are very good treble, but it was kind of inevitable that they would be made sooner or later, I fall short of calling them formulaic. Ofah is totally different imo. And genuine family tv unlike any other sitcom I can think of in the last twenty years.

The point is , a list of the Top 20 that most would agree with ,would be about 17-3 to the south
There have been plenty of dire sitcoms certainly . Duty Free or Never The Twain certs for The Top 10 Worst . 'Allo 'Allo must be up there too.

I like all comedies, from the ones that make me smile, to the ones that make me lol.
Not too fond of canned laughter though, it spoils a lot of shows.
My favourites were Flowery Twats, OFAH, Steptoe and Dads Army.
Just Good Friends was about a cockney wide boy who drove a Jaguar, worked for a bookie, as well as lived in a flat the bookie owned, and had a nice bird... Where do they get these stupid ideas from
One that was very popular that I didn't think much of was Porridge.

"Most" people who watch TV on a Saturday evening in the run-up to Christmas watch the X Factor. That doesn't mean it's any fúcking good.
And although I posted about some great northern comedies and some dire southern ones, why does it matter? And more importantly, who is to determine what is northern and southern? For instance, Perrin and Rising Damp were set down south, but Leonard Rossiter (the main character in both programmes) was a Scouser. Porridge was set in a prison in Cumbria, but Ronnie Barker (surrounded by prisoners and prison officers from the north and Scotland) was a southerner.

In the gold chains episode, one of the restaurants they are shown exiting after Arnie has a "Connery" is Tandoori Nights, which is at the Hammersmith end of Chiswick High Road. Used to smile every time I passed it. It closed down only last year.

Of the top twenty sitcoms as voted on britains best sitcom show about a decade ago,only... Last of the summer wine, the royle family and open all hours could be called proper northern. And open all hours had two southerners as the main actors.

I'm not trailing through 4 pages to check, but if this line is missing it is a shocking omission
Del and Rodney chatting two birds up in the "one speed wiper" episode, which I believe was the second ever
"What do you prefer Rodney, astro-turf or grass?"
"Oh I don't know, I've never smoked astro-turf!"
ps The little blonde one of the two birds, was a tomboy mechanic in Crossroads

I love that bit in "to hull and back" where they ask albert to find their way by the stars because he is an ex sailor. Theyre all looking up and then del and rodney look to him for a solution and he says..." Theyres thousands of them aint there". Also the best bit of the handgliding episode(only found out last night that the girl in that was Rosie Miller from eastenders, she didnt age well") was when del boy says "they dont know do they".

Saw Trigger at a fish and chips quiz night at the village hall in Hindolveston in North Norfolk a few months ago. He lives there apparently and makes no effort to treat it as a secluded hideaway. Scruffiest-looking bloke you could wish to see but seemed a decent down to earth sort of bloke who fitted in well in the community.
