Brilliant comedy.  Just watching the inflatable dolls episode.  Seriously why dont we have any good family(this episode not the best example of family tbf) comedies anymore.  We have lots of good modern comedies still... Alan partridge, the office, inbetweeners etc.. But not many that are good for the whole family.  My Family and outnumbered are both crap by the way so they dont count.

the 1986 series was the best, also had the hang gliding one and the supermarket hold up in that i think, and the weeping statue maybe

absurd that the feeble Xmas specials after the series had stopped are rated higher in polls

The 1996 trio of specials were very good imo.  They became millionaires and it was a perfect moment to stop.  But they didnt, the three christmas specials after that were dire.  The series up until 1989 were all great imo.  Deteriorated after cassandra showed up and they went to fifty minute episodes.

Is that still correct Rob?

Opening/closing ceremony of the olympics had loads of viewers.

Plus everyone has a TV nowadays.

Not so much in the 60's.

Mr E, almost all the highest ratings are pre 1990s as too many channels since

You could put on any old shyte at peak time in 1975 and get 15 million viewers, these days a peak time show is a hit if it gets 8/9 M

I saw the all time Top 40 a while back, couldn't believe some of the stuff in there.... one of those Dennis Norden 'All Right On The Night' and Movies that had been in the cinema 4 years earlier

There was very little 'modern' stuff , Diana's Funeral (proud to say i was one of the few that avoided that) 1990 WC Semi , not much else pre 1990

One of my favourite bits is when uncle albert puts on his fake shock expression, three times, in response to rodneys apparent infidelity.

It is a great programme prepared.  It isnt perfect(unlike say fawlty towers or im alan partridge, but they didnt do fifty odd episodes), but even the poorer episodes have at least one really funny moment/line.

Took a real risk trying to replace grandad, but uncle albert was brilliant.  The equal (no more no less) of grandad, which took some doing.

Sharks.  Dont talk to me about sharks.

Anyway is it beyond the collective wit of our current small screen writers to make a genuinely funny comedy for all the family?  Like i say there are some slightly adult orientated comedies that are very funny.

Apparently, the writer, John Sullivan, unsuccessfully submitted several scripts to the BBC before getting a job in their props department. During this time he wrote OF&H.

Didn't know until recently that he also sang the theme tunes.

He also wrote 'Citizen Smith' and 'Roger Roger'.

Citizen smith was pretty poor.  And roger roger was surely worse, never seen it.  He surely had some ability because much of ofah was cracking, but later on he lost the plot, the last three christmas specials were dire, he must have known it surely.

Yes - 'Dear John' and 'Just Good Friends'.

Difficult to keep it original and funny imo. I agree, the later stuff wasn't great.

Roger Roger was a comedy drama. Not particularly funny imo but watchable

Citizen Smith was pretty good btw (imo). Original and funny

Me and a mate walked to Bristol City ground with a couple of Reading fans. Got chatting and I said to the lad who was an Only Fools fan 'Do you know where Nelson Mandella House is?' - 'Peckham' he answered. 'No it isn't' I said, 'It's just there.'
It's right next to Ashton Gate and they filmed the Market right outside Ashton Gate too.
Random (fairly) interesting fact for those who didn't know that.
