after few hours on the tables, in the early hours, I went to the bar for a quiet drink (about 5.00 in the morning!! Crazy)  I probably looked a little lonely and desperate! I must have had 6 or 7 approaches in half an hour! In the end I just ended up ignoring them completely which resulted with one them telling me that I was incredibly rude!!   I was livid Angry

Thing about the brasses is a lot of them are absolute shockers. I was sitting at the bar in Mandalay Bay very late one evening drowning my sorrows after a bad beat knocked me out of a tourney. This monster came up to me, she was probably a looker on Prom night but the 20 years later of having been on the treadmill hadn't been overly kind.

Anyway, the opening gambit was $400. I said I wasn't interest at any price and if truth be told you'd have to pay me to do the deed anyway not the other way around. This didn't go too well it has to be said and she called me a Limey maggot. I asked the barman, "would you fk her?" He started laughing, shook his head and got me another beer on the house.

MGM is brilliant, once you get your bearings.  Going to the Grand Canyon is akin to going on holiday to Barcelona then taking a day trip to see the Colliseum in Rome.  It's fecking miles away, you spend hours waiting in the airport to catch a sh1t plane to a **** place.  I couldn;t wait to get back to Vegas, worst day trip ever.

Too hot for me in July, been loads of times usually in March or April, once at the beginning of Sept & it was still well over 100 degrees.
First time is the best though for the wow factor, though once you have been your usually hooked.
Done the dam & the canyon, if your not a great flyer stick to the dam, best trip is Death Valley but that is closed in the summer its about 140 degrees so is closed to the public Shocked
Your have a great time that is 100% assured.

You won't leave the air conditiong comfort of the casinos for too long, I can't emphasise enough how burning the heat will be and I lived in Australia! Even walking down the strip in the evening will be hard work let alone chilling at the pool in the afternoon. Don't say you haven't been warned.

www.cheapovegas.com/ is a good site to have a butchers at for reviews of what is going on at the various hotels. The Grand Canyon helicopter ride is good, you have to do it once in your lifetime. I was a bit unsure as i'm a terrible tourist as regards to sight seeing but glad I did that. You can land in the Canyon, have a late lunch and fly down the strip after dark.

Get your loyalty card as soon as you arrive in the MGM casino. You get points every time you gamble. It vcan be used at a few hotels as well.

I got one when I went - was only there 4 days, so thought I would get nothing.

The stuff I was offered was amazing - 8 free entries to the Grand Buffet ($25 a pop), a free room for the day we were leaving ($80), and I know the woman would have given me more if I asked.

The funny thing was that the main thing I played was a $10 fruit machine every night when we came in. I played for an hour or so each night, and in the 4 days was even. The last afternoon (after I had been given all the stuff) I lost all my gambling money playing a machine with a $17m jackpot - so when I go back I expect more freebies!

MGM Grand is so huge, it's towards the bottom end of the strip close to the airport, with some real lions in the hotel lobby.

First time I went to Vegas it was like arriving in a different world, it looked crazy and it was crazy, and it was brilliant, going back for a third time end of this year.

Re Grand Canyon, totally amazing, but there is so many different excursions you can do, from a quick-fix helicopter trip which also flies over the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead, (from pick-up at your hotel and back, door to door it's about 4 to 5 hours).

Other trips to the GC include a full day or overnight trip at a Western-style ranch if you like the cowboy life, horse riding, boat trip on the Colorado River, the skywalk.  So loads of different excursions from a quick-fix to a deluxe tour, so much to choose from, depends what you want to do.

As I said before it is really really hot in July, you get out of the swimming pool and 10 mins later you'll be sweating again, it is so hot.

Hope you have a great time, sure you'll love it.

I'd save your bucks and splash out on lunch in the Grand Canyon. You get picked up from your hotel, fly over the Hoover dam, land in the Canyon and have a few glasses of fizz with some grub. Then when night falls, fly down the strip all lit up, absolutely magnificent. Forget punting for a day, make that your treat. I did exactly that and there were 5 choppers all going in convoy that afternoon, they put on Flight Of The Valkyries on full blast in our headsets flying over the Canyon Grin. You can't put a price on that sort of experience.
Report Slicer March 4, 2013 11:25 AM GMT
Although I am now old, infirmed and haven't been to Vegas since the early 1980s before all the wonderful new hotels were built, I wanted to add my 2 cents worth to this thread.

1. The locals call it Lost Wages.
2. I will pass on the statement that the pilot of the plane made just after we landed:"Ladies and gentlemen, take a look around at these wonderful hotels and casinos. They weren't built on winners!"

Enjoy yourself, set an amount you are prepared to lose each day AND STICK TO IT, don't play roulette-they have 2 zeros which double the house advantage, do play craps if you must gamble as it is very entertaining watching the colonials getting excited and the odds are the best of all games unless you are card counting at blackjack (and if you are and get caught- OUCH!)

I hope this is of assistance!
Report smithy91 March 4, 2013 12:14 PM GMT

I did all of those rides Don, some people who bought tickets got to the top and thought fk this I'm not doing any of them. I had about 10 pints beforehand, that may have had something to do with my cavalier attitude.

It's worth going down town to Freemont Street to have a mooch about for a few hours one evening, The Golden Nugget is probably the best of the hotels and has quite a solid poker room. Plenty of lap dancing clubs with very rude women in them apparently on Freemont by all accounts.
Report Hound-Dog-2 March 5, 2013 11:43 AM GMT
a lot of good tips on here, the hotel your staying is at the South end of the strip, worth going up to the middle of the strip to the Wynn and Encore - that is where a lot of footballers go, AND Prince Harry !!!!!  Seen Wayne Rooney there last year.

Also The Venetian, Palazzo, Bellagio and Ceasars, all the big hotels around the middle of the strip def worth going to.  And Freemont St downtown, that was the original part of Las Vegas before all these monster hotels went up. But wouldn't wander off too far from Freemont St, bit of a rough area around there.

The Stratosphere - between the main part of the strip and Freemont St - great rides at the top, "Insanity" & "X-Scream" & "Big Shot" (have a look on YouTube).  You can also jump off if you want (nearly 1,200 feet down !), it's a controlled cable leap, you are going down about 45mph and takes about 15 seconds before you hit the ground.

The hotel your staying MGM Grand is one of the largest hotels in the world, over 5,000 bedrooms.  Infact about 15 of the 20 largest hotels in the world  are within a 2-mile radius within Las Vegas.

Grand Canyon is def worth seeing, whether it's a flight or on the ground, that is breathtaking. It is just spectacular by any standard.

So many things to do you'll need more than one trip.........

As someone already mentioned about the heat, it is suffocating in the summer months, and travelling up and down the strip, you won't walk far in that heat,  there is taxis and the monorail, but best way is The Deuce, it's a bus service which runs 24-hours on the strip.  They run all the time about every 10 mins and best thing is to get a day pass.
Report DonNo1 March 5, 2013 4:35 PM GMT

I knew a chap who went on his 50th birthday for the first time, his wife wasn't too keen because she would have preferred a hot beach somewhere.  But she said she enjoyed it more than she thought she would, but would probably not go back.

It's not just a place to go to gamble, plenty of big shows and shopping malls, the Grand Canyon, plenty of nice places to eat, it's not just a place to gamble.  But it is Las Vegas and they don't call it Sin City for nothing.

In the summer months it is extremely hot, about 100F, between Oct & April it's a lot  more comfortable heat.

I know nothing about roulette so I had $40 on a colour and $20 3 times on my kids birth dates. Just the one spin. One of the numbers came up and I landed nearly $700. I'm a Las Vegas winner. Drew the money from the window and never had another bet. Gave most to my wife for shopping and a couple of shows. Went to the Cirque de Soliel. Brilliant. Stayed at the Bellagio. I sat down in one of the comfy armchairs in the hotal waiting for the wife to wander around. When she finished we went upstairs. Got changed to go out then noticed my wallet was missing. Went downstairs and there it was jammed in the side of the armchair. Lucky boy.
