specifically, adverts on commercial radio, where ALL adverts are shockingly bad (on telly there are occasional adverts that are absolutely brilliant - but never on radio). last year Julian Rhind-Tutt (so good in Green Wing) appeared in so many dreadful ads as to trash all admiration I had for him and now I'm hearing the voice of Stephen Mangan (also Green Wing, coincidentally) all over the place. And they're pushing any old filth ; insurance, dog-food, Tesco etc.
I despise these people now, for taking the easy dollar when they certainly didn't need to.

But i take your point) (his nurses could exploit him in all kinds ways : ' we're going for a visit to the television studios today Steven - you'd like that wouldn't you? Just say the words on this card Steven'. Nurse pockets check for £20k. (JOKE))

Paul Whitehouse is a very talented bloke, but those Aviva ads are some of the worst ever. I hope he is getting paid silly money, as surely even he knows his stock is falling.

Nice to see the socialist type actors/comedians of the 80s have kept their promise about "not selling out"

Iggy Pop did insurance ads last year too. Of all the advert-sellout crowd, the ones who do Insurance ads are the worst because the insurance industry is stinking rich and so they pay accordingly - and you just know that the 'artist' has instructed his agent 'I'd rather not be a sellout - they'd have to make me an offer absolutely nobody could refuse'

I have just seen the sky advert where he looks a complete prat. Why do actors who have pots of money degrade themselves like this?
Bruce Willis, how could you I have just seen the sky advert where he looks a complete prat. Why do actors who have pots of money degrade themselves like this?
Annie, don't be too hard on Bruce, most of the huge box office names in the US do 'out of market' ads - think gorgeous George in the coffee ad. It used to be that they all headed to Japan, but Europe's the place now.
You'd be staggered at the money they get paid: it's well into seven figures.

"I'm not looking for a million things, just that one perfect thing.... love."
Cringeworthy stuff from the magnificent Scarlett Johansson.
Another shocker was when Ewan McGregor was doing his motorbike adventures and he was in this big budget ad that lasted ages with incredible scenery and he turned out to be selling aftershave.

Me and Mrs SF think that ad is great.

I will take another look at it, SF, as you like it. I admit I did not give it my full attention as I was playing in two poker tournies and watching spurs as well. It was the first time I had seen him in an advert and I did not like it on principle
I hate those Churchill clunes ads as well, treble.

Seeing as how the OP is referring particularly to radio advertising, I would like to know what makes him think that he knows whose voice he is listening to. It could be anybody. I seem to recall, not so long ago on this forum, that somebody thought that Morgan Freeman did the 'More Than' insurance advert. Some other joker thought that he recognised the "Birmingham accent" of Timothy Spall! Are you sure that you are accusing the right people?

on radio they hire peoples who's voice is recognisable. Something that will 'ring bells' for the listener. that association is enough to make the product come to mind more easily too. A desired goal of advertising is to make a product just that little more easily recalled if a mind wanders into the area inhabited by the product.

I always hate it when the voiceover actor refers to "we" when describing what the advertised company does, as if they are part of the production line process.

Robert Lindsay is an actor I cant stand and true to form he starred in an awful advert for a company i hate(sky).
At the end he puts on this awful fake, thoughtful voice as he recalls a "very good actor friend of mine who was always anti-sky and he said, actually, 'I'm missing out'' ".
Ooh it sends shivers down my spine.

But if it's only the voice that is recognisable, why pay the high cost of an actor when you can easily hire somebody who sounds the same? Did Morgan Freeman REALLY make that insurance advert? Is the other fella only miming?

Sorry rob, that was a bit rude , but I did find it incredible that loving cricket as you do you you just listen to the radio instead of getting sky and watching it. Bit like listening to Cheltenham on the radio.
