The most common hypothesis for the cause of motion sickness is that it functions as a defense
mechanism against neurotoxins. When feeling motion but not seeing it or vice versa, the brain will
conclude that the discordance is due to poisen ingestion. It then responds by inducing vomiting.

There are two good reasons for keeping a tidy desk.

i) Outside people coming to the office
ii) Using documents that other people might need to find quickly when you aren't there.

Otherwise, tidiness is largely just a matter of preference/laziness, but some of the most untidy people I know still know where everything is.

I have a very odd selection of things on my desk at the moment.

Every year in the U.S., an average of more than 100,000 people are shot, according to The Brady Campaign To Prevent Gun Violence.

Every day in the U.S., an average of 289 people are shot. Eighty-six of them die: 30 are murdered, 53 kill themselves, two die accidentally, and one is shot in a police intervention, the Brady Campaign reports.

Between 2000 and 2010, a total of 335,609 people died from guns -- more than the population of St. Louis, Mo. (318,069), Pittsburgh (307,484), Cincinnati, Ohio (296,223), Newark, N.J. (277,540), and Orlando, Fla. (243,195) (sources:  CDF, U.S. Census; CDC)

One person is killed by a firearm every 17 minutes, 87 people are killed during an average day, and 609 are killed every week. (source: CDC)

Re the populations of those US cities, you have to be a bit careful because of the way in which the populations are counted. The figures for St Louis, Cincinnati and Newark are all particularly dodgy as two of them sit on rivers that form a state border, and one is really just a suburb of New York City, it's closer to Manhattan than most of Queens.

I think thats rather missing the point HM!
By:

Well the point being made is a comparison of numbers shot compared to city sizes, and names well known cities, each of which is, in effect, much larger than the population being cited. Most settlements in the US are incorporated, many of them in the 19th century, but as the population of cities grew the incorporated settlements remained the same. Some incorporated towns took the decision to merge, but plenty did not. One that did is New York City, which was originally five separate incorporated settlements (Manhattan, The Bronx, Staten Island, Queen's and King's (now Brooklyn))

It's like saying that it's more than the population of the City of London (which is 7,300), which might technically be true, but the layman from another country might not grasp the difference between the city of London and the City of London. True, the scale of disparity there is different.

The statistical metro area sizes of the mentioned cities are:

St Louis - 2,795,794
Pittsburgh - 2,360,733
Cincinnati - 2,128,603
Newark - part of New York
Orlando - 2,223,674

So the population stats given are quite misleading unless you're really clued up. The real sizes of those cities are between five and ten times the populations given, and to me, that's enough of a difference to make it worth flagging up.

It is still a hell of a lot of people to have been killed though.
