Having not invested in any series since the demise of The Sopranos, Lost & 24, would be very interested in people's recommendations of US dramas that are worth seeing.
Thanks Happy

Not really a drama i guess but band of brothers is one of the best box sets ever.
Report Poppydog. October 9, 2012 4:46 PM BST
Seen most of the usual suspects (Sopranos, Wire, 24 etc, etc.)
and The West Wing still beats them all in quality and entertainment.

Id agree with m4s, band of brothers.

Thanks AM. Is The Wire genuinely must-see?
Report sixtwosix October 9, 2012 5:10 PM BST
The Wire is must see....but in my opinion it is not a patch on David Simon's previous work Homicide Life On The Street.

If you like sci-fi the reworked Battlestar Galactica was of the highest quality.
Report Angry Monkey October 9, 2012 5:11 PM BST
The Wire is the only one of the 'biggies' that keeps getting a mention that I couldn't get into personally. But based purely on the general consensus you probably really should watch it.

After you have bought the Breaking Bad box set that is. Happy
Report berto77 October 9, 2012 5:15 PM BST
Loved 24.  Just ordered Homeland DVD having missed series 1 and will Sky+ series 2.  After that I'll try West Wing.

Tried The Wire, just didn't like it.  I'm no prude and I'm sure it appeals to others but there was just too much swearing for me Laugh.
Report johnnyrant October 9, 2012 5:21 PM BST
Yes, this Homeland keeps being mentioned as good...
Report Cobblaz October 9, 2012 5:42 PM BST
Poppydog is correct. The West Wing. First 4 series in particular. After that, Aaron Sorkin left and the writing got steadily worse.

The Shield - was admiring a box set of all 7 series in HMV today.  but £69 was a high st ripoff price.

I really liked series one of The Wire, the accents do take some getting used to tho.
series two was good , but didn't really end it sort of petered out.
I am half way through series three which is so far as good as series one.lets hope it doesnt fail in the same way as s2.
Wouldn't say it was better than the soprano's but it's not far behind.

Agree with Leopard - why restrict yourself to Us dramas? - theres a big world out there making excellent television - romanzo Criminale the best thing Ive seen recently, but it was only really pushed by the Killing (Danish version) and the Bridge

going back, I really enjoyed Sopranos, Wire and Deadwood, but no US series has grabbed me for a while

Don't see the point of box sets of soap operas so instead would go with Futurama, but only up to season 3, and mainly for the episodes "Raging Bender", "A Pharaoh to Remember" and "Godfellas".

thopught i was alone in enjoying Romanzo Criminale : a stunning crime drama from italy. Set in the 1980's it even fooled me it was made in the 80's - the cars, the clothes, everything so well done
Report History Maker October 10, 2012 8:28 AM BST
The usual suspects for me. Mad Men, The Wire and The West Wing.

One criminally underrated series is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which only lasted for one season.

It's about the production of a Friday Night Live type comedy show. Sound familiar - pretty much the same premise as 30 Rock, which first aired at the same time.

30 Rock was out and out comedy, but Studio 60 was more drama laced with comedy. It was by Aaron Sorkin (of The West Wing), and actually tackled some serious questions about various media issues, albeit with a comical slant.

30 Rock was the easier sell and got higher ratings, while Studio 60 sank without trace. It shouldn't have though. Starred Matt Perry (Chandler from Friends) and Bradley Whitford (Josh from The West Wing).

Surprised Friday Night Lights has not had a mention. On Sky Atlantic at the moment mid-series two. Series one was brilliant. Has been the best show on tv for months, and probably will still be despite Homeland's return.

Dexter another honorable mention. Series 1 and 2 are spectacular. Quality dropping with every series since sadly, but still better than most shows.

The Wire.
As posted, put the subtitles on.

My brother got to the end of the whole thing, and put episode one straight back in and went through again. He tells me it's much better the second time, and he's lining up a third go soon.
I've been saving the replay for winter, but this thread might push me into it today.

You have to give it time though. But once you're in, it's like crack. Did eight hours straight once. Relationship/job killer if you let it.

Watched up to the end of Season 3 of The Wire, truly outstanding even the second series which has got a bit of grief on here. Not as exciting as the other two seasons but the acting and plot development is superb.

Watched season one of Breaking Bad, acting was really poor (particularly Jesse) for something that gets  universal acclaim and the original storyline is absurd to me. Might have to give it another go because I genuinely haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't rate it highly.

Got The Shield ready to watch too. I'll be surprised if anything tops The Sopranos though.
Report SlippyBlue October 11, 2012 6:25 PM BST
Steamship, Rich man Poor Man is an excellent shout and has brought back memories for me as it was a never missed series in our house. Even though I was very young at the time I can rememeber Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte in the lead roles very well.

Roots has to get a mention as does Hill Street Blues obviously but if I had to pick one that for old times sake that I would watch again it would be Alias Smith And Jones with Ben Murphy and Pete Duel.

I don't watch any modern American series personally.
Report guinness2dear October 11, 2012 9:21 PM BST
Pete Duel shot himself in 71'

His role in S & J was taken by Roger Davis, who incidentally was married to Charlies Angel actress Jaclyn Smith at the time..

Have Gun Will Travel (with the brilliant Richard Boone) box set, is about 20 quid on Amazon..

Davis originally did the voice over at the start when Pete Duel starred. Davis adapted to the part well but I must admit I preferred the early episodes with Duel. Brilliant series.
