Agree with Leopard - why restrict yourself to Us dramas? - theres a big world out there making excellent television - romanzo Criminale the best thing Ive seen recently, but it was only really pushed by the Killing (Danish version) and the Bridge
going back, I really enjoyed Sopranos, Wire and Deadwood, but no US series has grabbed me for a while |

Don't see the point of box sets of soap operas so instead would go with Futurama, but only up to season 3, and mainly for the episodes "Raging Bender", "A Pharaoh to Remember" and "Godfellas".

The usual suspects for me. Mad Men, The Wire and The West Wing.
One criminally underrated series is Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, which only lasted for one season. It's about the production of a Friday Night Live type comedy show. Sound familiar - pretty much the same premise as 30 Rock, which first aired at the same time. 30 Rock was out and out comedy, but Studio 60 was more drama laced with comedy. It was by Aaron Sorkin (of The West Wing), and actually tackled some serious questions about various media issues, albeit with a comical slant. 30 Rock was the easier sell and got higher ratings, while Studio 60 sank without trace. It shouldn't have though. Starred Matt Perry (Chandler from Friends) and Bradley Whitford (Josh from The West Wing). |

Surprised Friday Night Lights has not had a mention. On Sky Atlantic at the moment mid-series two. Series one was brilliant. Has been the best show on tv for months, and probably will still be despite Homeland's return.
Dexter another honorable mention. Series 1 and 2 are spectacular. Quality dropping with every series since sadly, but still better than most shows. |

The Danish version of the killing is unbeatable , never bothered with the american one.

The Wire is a must... only thing that is up there with the Soprano's imo although breaking is good, I prefer the other two

We got Mad Men and gave it up after 4 episodes as we found it boring.

Romanzo criminale would get my vote but a box set with English subs doesnt exist so i will put up Game of thrones. . .

I read "Gomorrah" based on the Naples mobs the other week, some jaw dropping stuff on there although it wasnt the best written book ive come across

Homeland excellent "The Wire gets my vote but would recommend that you put the subtitles on - found it difficult to follow the lingo to start with! " agree with this! |

Entourage is top as well

The Wire.
As posted, put the subtitles on. My brother got to the end of the whole thing, and put episode one straight back in and went through again. He tells me it's much better the second time, and he's lining up a third go soon. I've been saving the replay for winter, but this thread might push me into it today. You have to give it time though. But once you're in, it's like crack. Did eight hours straight once. Relationship/job killer if you let it. |

Watched up to the end of Season 3 of The Wire, truly outstanding even the second series which has got a bit of grief on here. Not as exciting as the other two seasons but the acting and plot development is superb.
Watched season one of Breaking Bad, acting was really poor (particularly Jesse) for something that gets universal acclaim and the original storyline is absurd to me. Might have to give it another go because I genuinely haven't spoken to anyone who doesn't rate it highly. Got The Shield ready to watch too. I'll be surprised if anything tops The Sopranos though. |

Steamship, Rich man Poor Man is an excellent shout and has brought back memories for me as it was a never missed series in our house. Even though I was very young at the time I can rememeber Peter Strauss and Nick Nolte in the lead roles very well.
Roots has to get a mention as does Hill Street Blues obviously but if I had to pick one that for old times sake that I would watch again it would be Alias Smith And Jones with Ben Murphy and Pete Duel. I don't watch any modern American series personally. |
|
By:
Pete Duel shot himself in 71'
His role in S & J was taken by Roger Davis, who incidentally was married to Charlies Angel actress Jaclyn Smith at the time.. |
|
By:
And talking of westerns...
Have Gun Will Travel (with the brilliant Richard Boone) box set, is about 20 quid on Amazon.. |
|
By:
Davis originally did the voice over at the start when Pete Duel starred. Davis adapted to the part well but I must admit I preferred the early episodes with Duel. Brilliant series.

Have Gun Will Travel, bought the series a few years back. Paladin, gun for hire, San Francisco. Even had his own business cards. Excellent stuff G2D. Also have complete collection of Wanted Dead Or Alive starring Steve McQueen and Cheyenne with Clint Walker.
