Again; well worth watching.

Jacques Peretti explores how decisions (many being political) made 40 plus years ago have had such an impact on the health and weight of people today:

"Peretti travels to America to investigate the story of high-fructose corn syrup. The sweetener was championed in the US in the 1970s by Richard Nixon's agriculture secretary Earl Butz to make use of the excess corn grown by farmers. Cheaper and sweeter than sugar, it soon found its way into almost all processed foods and soft drinks. HFCS is not only sweeter than sugar, it also interferes with leptin, the hormone that controls appetite, so once you start eating or drinking it, you don't know when to stop.

Endocrinologist Robert Lustig was one of the first to recognise the dangers of HFCS but his findings were discredited at the time. Meanwhile a US Congress report blamed fat, not sugar, for the disturbing rise in cardio-vascular disease and the food industry responded with ranges of 'low fat', 'heart healthy' products in which the fat was removed - but the substitute was yet more sugar."

that made us thin thing is interesting but massively slanted to fit their own agenda. simply saying that diets "dont work" is a ridiculous statement. a healthy diet is a diet and definitely does work. saying that most people put weight back on proves nothing, obviously most people put it back on, because most people that are trying to lose weight eat a load of ****. otherwise theyd all be thin in the first place.

Well Capt_F

I was thinking of resurrecting this thread as well.  I started last January at 14st 12lb, and on May 17th I was 13st 2lb...was very happy with it....would update this thread regularly.

Things went belly-up (no pun intendedGrin) for a while after May 18th - personal reasons, pretty nasty car crash so while I was not incapacitated I had restricted movements for 4-5 weeks, and with all the associated going-ons I stopped dieting as regularly and stopped walking (which I was doing in conjunction).

However, when back to normal I've continued. I'd fast at least once a week and 3/4 of the time twice. Haven't walked as regularly until the last few weeks where I'm back to walking 5 miles (1.5 hours) about 5 times a week.

Its the same as you - weight is constant at 13st - 13st 2lb. I'm happy with that for now as I eat and drink whatever I like 5 days a week.

For me,
-- I find the fast days easy, in fact I quite like them! I feel like I'm giving myself a rest, not "dieting". I do them no problem whatsoever
-- Appetite has certainly lessened - on normal days I enjoy my food a lot but dont/cannot eat as much as I used to!
-- Pleased that I'm eating all natural foods including plenty of natural fat (no low-fat this, low-fat that)
-- It's a success for me because its a normal part of my life-style, no real effort.
-- Want to lose another stone - will wait until January and do some serious walking, cut-down on bread a little bit and see where it brings me. Once reached I would expect fasting would maintain me at 12 stone or so

Twizzle, I've always been very interested in what we eat - primarily because I've had so much stomach trouble!

Through first developing a stomach ulcer at just 22 years of age I've had many years, off and on, of severely limiting my food intake - just because I didn't want to 'hurt'.

Family and friends were always telling me that what I was doing was 'wrong' (in limiting my diet so much) - but I never took a blind bit of notice of them as I knew what I was doing was right - ie, not hurting myself. but eating enough to keep my body healthy.

It's of great interest to me that all these years later there's so much scientific evidence coming out now about how restricting your calories (in particular) is good for you.

For my part; I always feel far better when I have little to eat. Far more alert and 'cognitive', if you will.

People, particularly in the Western world, have become 'used to' eating far more than they need to - and all the tripe about 'big is beautiful' and such stuff which has been promoted over the last 25 years in particular is doing no good whatsoever to anyone - other than the multi-national food companies and their profits.

Came "off" 5:2 over last two weeks - just wasn't practical, away from home, at family events and various other things.....will return to 5:2 on Monday January 6th, and looking forward to it!

In the 50 weeks or so I did in 2013, I would have "fasted" on 2 days at least 40 of those weeks and at least 1 day every week. Like others I noticed my appetite reduced noticeably, I ate whatever I liked and as much as I liked (my diet is generally quite good, I think anyway), but paradoxically I just seemed to eat less overall.

My first "fasts" were hard, I was "starving".... but of course they became easy and normal.

What I have noticed after these last 2 weeks of big meals, gunge, sweets etc - its the old pattern - the more I eat the more "peckish" I get....and I certainly don't feel as healthy. Thankfully, I have the solution now.

Someone said when I started it, it would be one of the best things I ever did. They were right.

Quite often I do the 16:8 fast. That means I eat during an 8 hour window.

My first meal of the day is at 12.00 or 1.00PM.

This is usually porridge or eggs. Which is what I like for breakfast but instead I have it for lunch. 3 days a week I have to have a proper meal at lunch time but then I'll have porridge for tea Happy

Then I will have dinner in the evening then I won't eat anything else after 8.00 or 9.00PM.

All snacks fruit nuts etc are eaten within the 8 hours.

I can actually manage a morning weights workout at the gym on no breakfast. I was a bit worried the first time I tried it but I was fine. Thought I might feel faint but I didn't.

Anyway, that works for me and helps keep my weight in check.

I've been like a pig at a trough since Christmas so I must get back to it.

if you go below 1000 calories you might end up with real stomach problems. the Gall bladder produces bile. this can crystallize and cause stones to form which can become life threatening. stay between 1000-2000 calories and you should lose weight. without the gall bladder danger.

parispike, to add to, and to back-up twizzle22's comments...

..it is difficult the first few times (I'd say about 4-6 times, with decreasing difficulty), so its important to acknowledge that. My experience when I started this time last year was exactly as others before me predicted, it gets really easy, in fact after a couple of months it's like a "rest day" - you feel like you are giving your body a break.

I found my enjoyment of food and the taste of food increased, also very liberating 5 days a week, and contrary to what you think you don't gorge yourself those days, well maybe the first non-fast dayGrin.

It's not a "diet" in the generally understood sense, I think of it more as an eating pattern - just fits into the rhythm of my lifestyle.

This thread has inspired me to give it a go. I decided to give it a crack about six weeks ago, when I cut my hours down to a three day week as I didn't fancy dieting and feeling hungry the whole time when I was at work. I have to admit I am finding the starvation tough! I have never drank so much tea in my life but the first couple of weeks the results were startling and I went from 14st 4lb down to 13st 6lbs. I have just lost another 6lbs in the last month and am hoping to lose another stone to get down to 12 stone.

I am very conscious about changing the way I eat. I have never really eaten junk food, but my portion size was far too big and rather than stop eating nuts altogether (I love them), I will now stop when I've eaten a third of a large bag of pistachios, rather than finish the whole lot off! Also no big meals for me after the pub at eleven o'clock anymore for me, so hopefully I won't end up putting it all back on when I give the diet up and go back to eating 'normally'.

Good luck everyone!

There was an interesting programme on Ch4 last night called 'Weighing Up The Enemy' whereby they reckoned a study by Yale university had concluded that people on weight loss diets will stick to them far better if their money is pitted against someone else also trying to lose weight, especially if they don't like the other person's principles.

It was eye-opening in many respects, not least the fact that with the massive growth industry in women's extra-large clothing (especially high end) it's becoming so much more acceptable that women are great, big, enormous beasts - and they have even less reason to shed any fattage if they can buy the clothes they like - and have spent a fortune doing so, which gives them even less of a reason to lose the flab as their expensive clothes would become redundant.

One of the two protagonists in the programme waging their money with each other was a 36ish year old doctor who was something like 6-8 stone overweight.
Which is shocking in itself.

Just pure greed, gluttony and indolence had got her to that state.
And she is the one dishing out advice to others on their health.
Sheesh.

She did make me laugh with one comment though when she said something like:
"I've tried the 5:2 diet, which went to the 6:1 diet, which then became the 7:7 diet - which wasn't any diet at all and I was just stuffing my face with anything I wanted 7 days a week."

Its been a long time since I felt so clear in my head. Slept great. After the first couple of days I felt strong and fit...and slim. And I lost about 3kg, most apparently from my waist. I read about it online and thought why not? I read that the body cleans itself out, detoxifies itself and dumps dead cells, free radicals etc.

I dunno if two days fasting is any good but I will definitely do another soon. Planning two times a year.

I lost 4 stone doing this in 2013. I've put a stone back on since last summer so will be giving it another go from Monday.
I find fasting easier than worrying what I can & can't eat and how many calories there is in anything.

you have so much more time as well - no cooking, no shopping...and no crapping

you'll get nowhere if you count calories.

After reading the Diabetes thread which I suffer from I'm seriously considering this again as felt the best I'd  felt for years when on it.

tried calorie counting for twenty years - on and off. Lost five stone gained five stone. Lost three stone gained four stone. etc. Must have lost my total body weight over the years. People say i don't look my age but I definitely feel it. Wrecked.
Tried cutting refined carbs and am getting ultra super results. Wasted all those years on calorie counting bulll.
Like a lightweight muscle building course without that whey protein nonsense. But the cave man diet is affecting my stomach. Cannot eat any bread/cake now - body doesn't recognize it anymore. I can eat pasta if i want to? But don't - i think it might be the soy flour in the bread that affects me.

Nearly 5 years on and this diet is still going strong!

Last autumn I was 16-7.  I am 6-1 tall.

Followed the 5:2 diet since (apart from one week at Christmas and one week holiday)

Now am 14-8. I have done no more exercise.

I like the fact that you only really have to 'diet' 2 days a week which is bearable.

I diet on Monday and Thursday and have nothing to eat bar dinner at 6-7pm.  I can have 600 calories which is a reasonably big meal
if you use lots of veg or salad.

Also from the alcohol point of view, I can't drink on 2 days which makes me less of an alky.  On the 2 beer free days, I don't miss the beer because
I am so looking forward to dinner.

I don't have the energy on diet days so couldn't imagine doing heavy work on those days, but I sleep much better.

I am 'supposed' to be about 11 stone, but imo my ideal weight would be 13 stone.

My latest weigh in last week was 14 stone 5 - so I have now lost over 2 stone in less than a year.
