A really good programme from Horizon, very interesting. I'd just assumed that because I was eating a good bit of protein but without any meat or dairy that it was doing me good (way over the daily guide amount in fact). I think the gist of it was that it's in the numbers. Eating a fair dollop of protein every day forces the body to produce new cells rather than repair the old ones and I suppose that, like a factory production line, the more you make the greater the number of possible defects purely from chance, meaning that you are more likely to encounter age-related disease sooner than you need to.
The one or two days of fasting switches off new production to a large extent and fatties can therefore fast a day and then gorge themselves on whatever fat-drenched muck they like and still come out ahead of the guy with the healthy diet who eats roughly the same amount of protein every day, or so it seems. I'm thinking of two days of eating normally for me followed by one of a 600cal fast, but looking into it all on the webternet first. I'll have to watch it again. |

That scientist presenter is a gluten for bad health news.
It's only a few months ago he was told in a documentary that he was really unfit and had high amounts of fat in his blood, and any attempt at intensive exercise wouldn't do much good as he was one of the people who won't show positive results. |

That 100+ year old bloke that was doing the london marathon was amazing. He wasn't even hunched over or particularly frail looking
I've decided I eat way too much. I'm not particularly overweight (6ft, < 13st) but a lot of the time it's just eating for the sake of eating |

Having been very impressed with the program I thought it could work for me.The fact I could eat exactly what I wanted on normal days really appealed.I'm on my 10th day and have fasted for 5 of which today is one.In that time I've been to pub twice and ate very normally on non fasting days.Very early days but I was very pleased to find out this morning I've lost 9lbs so intend to carry on for now.

shhhh don't let the food companies see you fasting. we need to eat 5 a day, eat low fat and exercise to lose weight |
By:
also you need to eat 6 small meals a day to keep your metabolism going
|

On my second week of fasting two days per week....not complete fasting, just reducing to no more than 600 calories.Mondays and Thursdays for me,must admit I'm not finding it too difficult, seems to have the effect of reducing the amount of food you feel you need on the non fasting days.I can see weight dropping off people quite quickly and what's more important, staying off.

I started the alternate day fast last Saturday and I'm finding it easy to stick to. I don't actually need to lose weight, but when I worked out what I was eating daily I was getting almost twice the protein, 1.3 times the carbs and 1.5 times the salt recommended. Other than fibre, everything else was under. So I'm trying to even it all out. Actually feel good on the days I eat light and enjoying the days I don't.
I looked at some research on this diet and saw someone say that it's possibly dangerous to eat every other day. WALOFS, as they say. It's been a comparatively short time that we've been eating regular meals as distinct from other animals, many of which live on the borderline of starvation and feast when the opportunity arises and they seem to do alright. |

Just to add the days I fast I haven't needed any diabetic pills as my sugar levels have been the best for a long time. Early days yet but very pleased. Not sure if it's on catch up TV NSL.

I saw the program and was really impressed too... so the following day I started doing the alternate day fasting
I have lost weight, no where near as much as on Atkins, but a pair of trousers I could barely do up (and wouldn't have dared sat down in), I can now do up with ease, AND I can sit down in them! I have nothing but water on my fast day - there is the odd hunger pang around 5-6pm, but I just plan the following days food in my head and that helps a lot. It's not like a normal diet where you're hungry and you know all you have to look forward to the next day is just more of the same. I was worried about gorging on the food day - bit of pig out on the first one - but now it's settled down. A typical food day for me would be: tin chicken curry, chips and large naan two tuna rolls and salad two packet crisps one kit kat not exactly starvation rations is it fingers crossed I've finally found an eating plan I can stick too, and still lose some weight! |
By:
started off fasting about 8-9 months ago on the eat stop eat plan (Brad Pilon) - 2 days fasting a week
Lost a ton of fat and weight over the first 3 months. I now fast every day and my eating window is 12-8 every day and i train before i end my fast. I never used to like breakfast and actually found it made me want to eat more so i started skipping it and the fat has fallen off even more. i chuck in a days fast every now and then just to keep mixing it up. Definitely the way forward. |
By:
whats the plan ?
eatnothing one day bar water next day eat whatever you want ? sounds too good |
By:
"Eat, fast and live longer."
I've been trying this for a while. Only just noticed the comma though. |
By:
the eat what you want is nonsense imo (as fast food aint good for your health) but you will still probably lose weight as you don't really compensate the eating day for fasting the day before.
Its all about calories in less than calories out |
By:
basically capt-F that's it. One day on, one day off.
If you can, watch the Horizon prog (link above) because it's not just about calories in, calories out. A lot of it is to do with lowering some IGF (?) hormone, and that's involved in lots of bad things like cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure etc. On the show it said that most people think they'll stuff themselves silly on the food-day, but on average most only eat 10% more than usual - so in effect they're halving their daily calories - not to mention halving their food bill as well. They also said that you could have a fruit platter on the fast-day, but once I start eating, I tend not to stop , so I find it easier to just have water. If you google you'll find lots of variations on the fasting approach. What I like about it is, as I only start to get hungry about 6pm, I know it's only a few hours (and sleep) until I can eat whatever I want and that keeps me going. Also, when you start losing weight, because you want that to continue, you don't overeat on the food-day because you can see it working. |
By:
yeah yeah
with all due respect the Horizon is one program which was sensationalist to say the least. there is a ton of research on this particularly in America. Not sure where they found the alternate day eating but it isn't a particularly popular method of fasting. let me know and i can send you loads of resources to read. |

amazing how they managed to fit 20 mins of material into a 60 min documentary through the use of film school gimmicks and useless scenes of him drinking soup. Favorite quote:
"It's my last day in the states and it has been absolutely eye opening, I had no idea at all there was so much research going on...". Clearly no journalists left at the BBC so they just sent this bloke interesting though the implication that this is a modern scientific discovery when in fact it's been a significant part of many (if not most) traditional cultures for thousands of years, and it's the modern scientific community which has been propagating non-sensical and enormously damaging myths for the last 50 years which has led to the modern health crisis. |
By:
Horizon has been this way for many years. They've cut back on the gimmicks to an extent, such as the pointless flashes accompanied by sounds effects and mad cellists sawing away while the presenter (used to be a softly-spoken female) drones on almost inaudible in the background. But it is still pretty bad at times. Expect every programme on physics to be punctuated by lots of close up scribbling of equations on blackboards and physicists playing with small wooden puzzles.
Leonard Susskind: And you want me to be filmed fiddling with this toy for what reason?? BBC Producer: Trust me, it'll look great - it did all the other 25 million times we did it. And yes, it was about 20 mins strecthed out but they always do this. You know when you watch that whatever the first few ideas presented are that they are going to be wrong, or perhaps a waste of time in the light of whatever the 'big idea' of the programme is that follows. They do have to make it a bit entertaining. This one was interesting because it contained information that is at least useful to the general population. Whether the science turns out to be right is another matter, but there's no point always making science programmes about matters that have already been decided. |

If I remember he covered 3 types of fasting routine and found one that suited him, tests when he came back to England proved that one of the methods claims, the first I think, were bullmud, and although his IGF or whatever it was was reduced it had soon returned to the old level. You can follow Mosley on twitter, he still sticks to the fasting and the HIT. The HIT training programme was irresponsible imo as it didn't mention any safety guidelines, when doing intense 'workout' even for just one minute your heartbeat should be monitored throughout, especially for a man of 50.

Horizon has made some great programmes over the years. But I've always found the predictable first twenty minutes very annoying. As boggle pointed out, they go to great lengths to explain a theory and always end up with the equivalent of "but we don't want to give you that".

By:
Can't believe there hasn't been a 'Horizon programme on fisting!' thread. Damn troll banning has made this forum all mature again.

I'm on day 17 and have managed to lose another two pounds taking the total to eleven.I wont bullsh*t it isn't easy on fasting days as I'm doing the severe one where I eat nothing but enjoy the fact I can eat normally on the others. The days I fast I don't take any metformin as my blood is the best it's ever been on those days so that's a bonus.I think it's important not to eat a pile of cr*p on the other days but went to the pub twice last week and drank my usual.
Not for everyone but it seems to be working for me. |
By:
how many do you neck at the pub mo ? might try this if i go pub minimum 6 pints
|
By:
I had 6 then 7 pints. Not a massive amount for most but it keeps me happy.

I'm on week 2 and fast on mondays and Thursdays. Example of food intake on fast days- breakfast: boiled egg, slice of toast, black coffee, lunch: low calorie veg soup, dinner: salad with slice of ham, supper: slice of toast. Plus lots of water. Also porridge is very good for breakfast if you don't take milk.

That sounds ok atom burns and something to consider myself as I know I'll be unable to carry on my strict no food for ever.Good luck with it.

I've fallen out of love with Horizon over the years. I'm sure they used to be better than they are now.
I watched the one a few weeks ago with the annoying Dr Ali. It seemed nothing more than an hour long advert for L'Oreal. So I couldn't be bothered to watch the episode on fasting. But I've been following this thread with great interest and this afternoon I gave in and watched the programme on You Tube. I'm glad I did, it was very good. I always follow a calorie restricted diet, by that I mean I just eat enough for my needs never any more. And always with optimal nutrition. I eat about the same amount every day. No fasting involved. But according to the programme eating this way will not effect IGF 1. Only fasting will bring it down. I might try fasting every alternate day. This would be easy for me to do (I think). I will have eggs and porridge for breakfast on my fast day. That would be about 500 calories. The next day I'll eat as normal. I must look into IGF 1 in greater detail ( the joys of the Internet). Since I started typing this I've decided I can't be bothered. That didn't last long then did it? |

That L'Oreal advert Horizon was an absolute disgrace. Someone at the BBC has a roomful of cosmetics or a pile of dirty cash.
