Sounds like you know what you need to do.

Definitely see your GP asap. I'm no expert on the subject but I have read that alcohol withdrawal can be extremely dangerous, even fatal (as History Maker says).

Are you able to hold down a job?

GL to you

Been in my job several years now

A stopping drinking thread on here always gets a lot of replies, it tells you something about drink in out society.

It certainly tells you something about drink in the gambling community  Sad

I think to myself what can i do to replace the drink? The only things in life that give me pleasure is my family, betfair and drink. I maybe need to concentrate on finding a good woman and settling down.

I am fed up waking up having spent an absolute fortune. Its a viscious circle. Booze, ****, more booze, taxis etc. If i had just stayed in the past 2 occasions i would have had an extra £150 in my pocket and maybe even more as that was 2 nights away from betfair.

I feel terrible until wednesday then i am thinking about my next drink

YES YOU CAN DRINK IN MODERATION ,THE ONLY TROUBLE IS ONCE YOUR AN ALCOHOLIC YOU CANT DRNK AT ALL,SO START OFF DRINKING IN MODERATION AND STAY DRINKING IN MODERATION ,I USED TO GO OUT WITH MY MAM AND DAD AND DRINK CHANDYS FOR YEARS THEN I WENT OUT WITH MY MATES AND DRANK A FEW PINTS ,THEN I GOT MARRIED AND DRANK 4 PINTS 7 NIGHTS A WEEK FOR YEARS THEN I MADE LOADS OF MONEY HAD LOADS OF SPARE TIME TO ENJOY MYSELF SO I DRANK MORE ,THEN IN THE END I HAD TO DRINK I HAD NO SAY IN THE MATTER ,NO ALCOHOLIC GOES OUT TO BE AN ALCOHOLIC,

WITH ME IT CREPT UP VERY SLOWLY ,I CAN POINT MY FINGER AT LOADS WHO SHOULD GIVE UP ALCOHOL ,BUT NEVER ME ,EVEN MY FRIENDS THOUGHT WHAT A NICE HARD WORKING GENEROUS LAD ,DO WAH DIDSDY COULD NEVER BE AN ALCOHOLIC

WELL IM A BIG ALCOHOLIC AFTER THINKING I WAS A LITTLE ALCOHOLIC,ITS NOT HOW MUCH YOU DRINK ,ITS HOW MUCH YOU CONSUME THAT AFFECTS YOU IS THE PROBLEM

I WAS THE QUITE SHY CHANDY KIDD AND ENDED UP THE ALCOHOLIC,

YOU WORK HARD YOU COME HOME HAVE A SHOWER MTHEN YOU ASK NOW WHATS MY REWARD ,WELL IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH ALCOHOL IT ENDS UP AS NO REWARD JUST A SOUL AND MIND AND BODY DESTROYER

IVE WORKED I DESERVE A DRINK ,THAT DRINK WILL LEAD YOU TO INSANITY OR DEATH IF YOUR MAKE UP IS LIKE MINE

WERE THE PROBLEM ,WE DONT KNOW HOW TO ENJOY LIFE WITHOUT A DRINK

ALCOHOLICS LISTEN TO NO ONE ESPECIALLY DO WAH DIDDYS ,JUST DO WHAT YOU WANT TODO ,AND IF YOU EVER GET TO THE POINT WHERE YOU WOULD STAND ON YOUR HEAD ALL NIGHT AND WORK FOR NOTHING IF YOU COULD GIVE THE ALCOHOL UP LOOK FOR ME ,ILL TRY AND HELP YOU ,

I WOULDNT LISTEN TO ANYONE WHEN I WAS DRINKING ,I WASNT LIKE THEM UNTILL IT WAS TOO LATE ,ALCOHOLICS ASK YOU FOR ADVICE AND THEN STILL DO WHAT THEY LIKE ,

I KNOW YOUR LIKE ME YOU WANT A FAIRY TO COME AND SPRINKLE STARDUST ON YOU SO YOU CAN DRINK SUCCESFULLY ,IT DOESNT WORK LIKE THAT

I stopped about 3 years ago , and don't miss it at all - the more you get in to not drinking  the less you want it , in my experience.

same here stan , i used to cane the booze every day and every night. if i had missed a sat or sun lunch session i would be distraught or any session come to that , then i just seemed to cut it out slowly but surely without even trying and i wouldnt give a gold pig for it now. it wasnt as though i said to myself i must stop it just sort of happened ,strange really. not bothered about it at all now , still have a drink socially but can then leave it for a month easily or more than that , im as happy to drink 3 pints and be satisfied these days
By:
Kal84
When: 08 May 12 21:54
Fair play to you Stan - Was there a reason why you decided to stop? Did you feel you had to replace the drinking with someone else?

Pox i couldnt have just 3 pints cos i dont feel its worth it personally. If i drink then its to get smashed.

With a change of mindset do you think you could drink more sensibly? I had developed bad habits when I was drinking and knew I had to change. Once it sank in it has been easy enough to keep drinking but be more responsible. I'm not far into that plan right enough but I'm confident.

Drinking is a huge part of Scottish culture. It is hard to stop and it's hard to avoid. I admit I have thought about stopping altogether but I'm also worried about how I would socialise, which sounds terrible when you say it.

Who you are drinking with makes a big difference aswell. One of my mates drinks pints all night. When I'm sick of pints and go onto jd, it means I drink slower which means I don't get as wrecked when I'm drinking with him.

i'm a fellow scotsman too John. You are correct drinking is huge part of Scottish culture.

I maybe could drink more sensibly but want to just refrain and clear my head. I do want to be able to go out for a few without grtting smashed. Then again on the other hand i would love to stop altogther.

Maybe i will find that happy medium at some stage

If you stopped drinking John would you still socialise with the same people?

That is a good question. I don't have many aquaintances. Im either really good friends with people or don't bother. Nothing inbetween so I think I would.

I do have one mate that I went to school with. He went to the RAF, I went to uni, never really saw much of him for years then became good friends again around 4 years ago. I can honestly say that every single time I have met up with him in those 4 years, drink has been involved. We have never socialised sober.

He is good company, dunno why we go on like that. Just habit maybe.

Out of interest what do you drink?

Turning point was a few sessions ago. Rushed out without proper dinner, got there and they were drinking bottles of lager, when I would have bigger bottles of cider which is my choice atm. Then the shots started, which I would never suggest doing. Then the shots kept coming, then god knows what happened.

I realised the next day that I had to show more willpower and drink what I wanted and not go along with the flow. Who gives a **** if it ****s up the round? Crazy mixing had to stop. I should drink what I want and what I'm comfortable drinking.

Once I made that desicion I felt better for it and have been able to stick to it thus far.

Saying all this I ordered some high quality bourbon online earlier, it should be here on Friday haha

I lived a few years in Scotland and it's true, the whole mindset is different; it's a great craic but no country for old men...

live a little, by all means, but ease off at age 30 imo

Kal84- I'm ten years sober and it was the best decision I ever made, saved my relationship with my now wife. I replaced drinking with golf, the money you spend on kit and membership fees doesn't even scratch the amount of money you can piss up the wall in a single year.

When I joined my golf club I established the fact in the clubhouse that I was a non-drinker straight away ,therefore no peer pressure, good luck with your endeavour.

Kal,i decided last march to have a break from drinking.I was sick of the hangovers that lasted 2-3 days and even started having bad panic attacks! My plan was a 2 month break to have a detox, but found the longer i went without, the less i wanted a drink! Its over a year since i had a drink and its nice to get up without feeling ****!.Iv lost about 2 stone and feel the fittest i can remember for ages!Another plus is that my visits to the clap clinic have become less frequent!LaughLaughLaughLaughLaugh
