Well into my 11th year off the booze and no regrets . I had a terrible recovery rate, stopping altogether was the sensible option .

Ask your doctor for 1. Acamprosate to reduce cravings { brand name Campral } and 2. ask for alcohol counselling { in my area it's paid for by the NHS }. Don't be surprised if your doctor is ignorant of these things.

You might have to completely change who you spend time with, or at least when you see them. I was overdoing it a while back and ditched it for 3 months just to settle down.
Avoid pubs like the plague, even if you think that you can cope, you won't. Go to bog-standard restaurants instead. It'll still be cheaper than when you were smashing it up when you add it all together. Go to meet people for breakfast or lunch on your days off as well. Breakfast especially - no chance of peer pressure. |

THE PROBLEMS YOUVE GOT WITH ALCOHOL ARE NOTHING TO THE PROBLEMS THAT WILL OCUR IF YOU DONT SORT THEM OUT NOW,I GUARENTEE YOU THEY WILL GET ALOT WORSE ,THEY DONT GET BETTER THEY JUST GET WORSE AND WORCE AND WORSE THEN HORRIFIC WORSE AND THEN HORIFIC WORSER

Just a caveat...
If you're bingeing don't worry about it, but if you're drinking more than about 5 pints/bottle and a half of wine every day, you shouldn't go cold turkey. Cut down by about a unit a day. Alcohol withdrawal can be fatal. |
|
By:
i am serious about giving it up completly but its going to be the hardest thing i have ever had to go.
Sitting with the shakes at the moment My life could be so much better off the drink. It totally changes me in a bad way and i can see that now |
|

kal i can deal with anything bare being sick

YOU NEED HELP YOU CANT DO IT ON YOUR OWN,IT WILL BE THE HARDEST THING YOUVE EVER DONE ,BUT IT WILL BE WAITING UNTILL YOUR DEFENCES ARE DOWN ,AND THEN IT WILL ,GIVE YOU MILLIONS OF EXCUSES TO PICK UP THAT FIRST DRINK ,

I didn't cut down, I stopped, in 1996
Dont touch it all now, apart from the occasional glass of wine in a restaurant Never missed it |
|
By:
Once you stop everywhere you look will have booze references, when walking by pubs the smell of beer will be lovely, don't give in .
Even on here you have Burton Brewer and Shaky, be careful . |

Don't sit there living with the shakes - they're not just unpleasant, they're dangerous. Seriously - might progress to delirium tremens, which can be fatal. Have a pint if you're shaking, and get down to your doctor - it's not urgent but you really should.
Drink as little as you feel you can get away with though. A pint/big glass of wine/double spirit and mixer ought to see you through until tomorrow morning. If you've got the shakes you really need to seek help though. You're essentially always either drunk, or in withdrawal. Almost certainly permanently over the drink drive limit. You essentially have two choices: Go cold turkey, having been to your doctor (he'd prescribe benzo somethings) or Cut down slowly. My friend who's a GP reckons 10% each day. That doesn't mean that if you're drinking 10 pints a day, then drop a pint each day, it means every day drinking 10% less than the day before. In pint terms, the first ten days would be: 10.0 9.00 8.10 7.29 6.56 5.90 5.31 4.78 4.30 etc Think you have to be down to about 5 units (2 pints) a day before you're properly safe to go cold turkey. |

If it's badly affecting your life, I'm sure that Do Wah Diddy could give you some advice about AA - I think that he goes.
Funnily enough, my biggest problem is that I'm a 'good drunk'. Booze makes me friendly, generous, kind, complimentary. In a way, I wish that I was a worse drunk, because I might drink less. |

Cigarettes don't make you behave like an idiot, at least the ones made of tobacco. Alcohol not only destroy your health, it destroy your life

abolo..ask a doctor which is the biggest killer pal

Strictly on the health matter you are right, but the worst with heavy alcoholism is that in the end it makes you lose your wife, children, house, job and money. I don't speak about the guy who sip a couple of beers of course, but the OP is at another stage.

alcohol is much worse than cigarettes, when i smoked **** i never got nicked and got a criminal record but when i was drinking my criminal record is lets just say long

Do wah - what age did you stop drinking and what did you do to replace the drink? I blacked out on sat nite. Its happening more and more often and it scares me. Its day 1 off the booze for me. My body aches but I am clear in my mind that I want to stop. The test for me is the weekends. Just hope I am strong enough to stay off it

How old are you kal?
|
|
By:
28 mate
|
|
By:
Sounds like you know what you need to do.
Definitely see your GP asap. I'm no expert on the subject but I have read that alcohol withdrawal can be extremely dangerous, even fatal (as History Maker says). Are you able to hold down a job? GL to you |
|
By:
GL Kal.
If you decide cutting down is an option instead of giving up then I'll describe my system (everybody slates it but it works very well for me). Everybody's different though, so best of luck with whatever you decide to do. I guess it all boils down to willpower in the end and you just have to decide what kind of system your willpower can handle best. Quite possibly for you it's abstinence. |

I never really had a "problem" but I was probably drinking more than was good for my health.
I realised I was getting too old for that kind of lifestyle (I was about 32) and decided I was going to give up "stupid" drinking and have just drunk in moderation ever since. I'm not saying that this is right for you but what I did which may be relevant to you, is find myself a different cirlce of friends and develop new interests. |
