meaningless?

It's a sum. Sums don't require brackets to be valid.

1. If you do it on a standard calculator it is zero. (Scientific mode doesn't count)

2. A calculator is a machine.

3. A machine can do counting stuff faster and more accurately than all people.

4. Therefore it is zero.

Zero

Can't really give any reasoning other than it's a sum and the answer is 0.

Is that the right answer?

How about this one:

Int[x/Sin(x)] from 0 to sqrt(13).

Any ideas?

agreed on the BODMAS (the brackets would be merely indicative)

5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 x 0 = ?

0 x 5... 0
5 + 5 + 5 - 5 + 5 + 5 - 5 ... 15

I have to say, this has totally freaked me out, I use my windows calculator (in scientific view) to calculate loadings and pressures for my engineering design work!
In scientific view it comes out 15, in normal view it comes out 0.
I am now concerned about how many projects over the years have been over or under engineered Scareddue to this bollo x.  Seriously, wish i hadnt read this thread Plain

I remember this issue arising in the mid-70s when pocket calculators first entered general use. Obviously they weren't allowed in classrooms, and one maths teacher used to use this kind of example, whereby the answer is given as 0 instead of the correct 15, as a reason why they never would be.Sad
