Noticed a few times recently that chavs/assorted underclasses etc have been wearing what is surely the last bastion of upper class discreet branded clothing.

I can only assume that it's being worn by someone on one of these reality/TOWIE? type shows?I know when chavs started to wear Burberry they v nearly bankrupted the brand, and previous to that Calvin Klein virtualy stopped selling their brand in the uk for a period. The type the chavs are wearing though is sort of emblazoned all over the quilted jacket(rather un-barbour)

Lets just say the types i saw wearing these didn't look like they were off for  aweekend of country pursuits.

While it's amusing to think of the looks on some toffs faces when they see some "chantelle" wearing a Barbour jacket with tracky bottoms, surely it'sjust plain wrong!

I hate chavs.....problem is we're on our 3rd generation of chav, and they breed like rabbits

They seem to go particularly well with a staffy

Spose they'l do to barbour what they did to Range Rovers.Once the epitomy of discreet money now a hideous "look at me i have money/im a wanna be gangsta"

In fairness ive seen the lower orders in Barbour for a fair bit in London town but not so much in the north. The most bizzare thing i ever saw in London was a man (presumably hetrosexual) wearing Ugg bootsLaughwith a quilted barbour jacket just last summer
Report BonVivvy November 21, 2011 12:12 PM GMT
Yesterday in Manchester you could say Barbour was as good as "ubiquitous" on chavs, can only presume the fakes are now also heavily flooding the market.

My 15yr old daughter also tells me that Chavs have ruined brands like Jack Wills and Hollister the last yr as well.

Not a brand wh0re myself but find Ralph Lauren are always high quality and seem to last for ever and a brand which chavs have neve rreally connected with.
Report Coachbuster November 21, 2011 12:20 PM GMT
One thing to thank Chavs for i guess.

I do believe the current Chav movement will go down in history as a sort of anti-order similar to the  Luddites .  Grin

I expect one day there will be a Chav political party  Plain

Even the timeless classic brands are pretty much defenceless against the chavs now Vivvy. It's a sort of lower-class version of 'short-selling' vulnerable companies.

only brands you want are vintage.

Modern stuff is made in china, with slave labour, same product has asda logo on tuesdays
Report billy hill November 21, 2011 2:06 PM GMT
The football casuals adopted the quilted barbour jacket a season or so ago and it has now dropped down to chav level.
Report BonVivvy November 21, 2011 2:14 PM GMT
You're not far wrong brendan, much of the branded stuff is made side by side in the huge factories in China and the far east, though anyone thinking a Primark polo shirt is "just the same" as say a Ralph is a little wide of the mark. That said most mid market brands are virtually same quality and fabric as the the high enders.

Waitrose is still thankfully Chav free as is John Lewis(same i know but still, small mercies and all that)

I'm no fan of toffs at all but there's a hilarious irony about the lower orders(often the lowest of the benefit filth) wanting to emulate upper class landownersLaughCharles will be SEETHING if he visits a sink estate and they are all attired as if going out with the Beaufort!

Makes ya proud to be British, gawd bless em

Report billy hill November 21, 2011 2:31 PM GMT
Some of the Polo stuff looks a bit tacky to me, the polo shirts with the huge pony logo.  Not quite as bad as Superdry and Jack Wills though.
Report brendanuk1 November 21, 2011 2:36 PM GMT
its all made for a tenner at most and sold for as much as mugs will pay.

exclusivity by paying what others wont for a shirt. Nothing to do with quality or fashion. Just people proud of being mugged off Crazy

I can't help but think it's a bad development and not a bit disconcerting. Barbours were for the point to point brigade originally. The chavs should stick to what they know best, TK Max and the like. I believe they do an evening wear section in certain city centres. Liverpool, Birmingham, Newcastle and the likes.

You can buy them from China and then shift them, same with a lot of branded goods.

Them hair straighteners were a quick buck two year back.

Living in the countryside I have been a Barbour wearer for some 35+ years and am appalled at this chav trend which has been noticeable
over the last 4 years or so . First used were the International jacket followed by the Quilted jacket .
My last purchase was a Messenger Bag, now i dare not leave the house with it . What am i to do about my Man-bag,

From your username I assume that you want us to believe that you're not exactly representative of the Upper Middle Class country pursuits brigade? Nonetheless, as one of the few forumites to be able to spell 'prejudice' correctly, I'm also assuming that you're one of those kids who try and hide their expensive education, through the use of the prevailing 'street' patois.
Nice try Giles.

While no brand is 100% safe from the ever growing chav underclass,i'm with BV when it comes to Ralph Lauren not being ruined by the lower orders.Perhaps its the slightly old classic/golfing image.Though you do see Jordan-esque permatanned types wearng RL on occasion darn sarf but not these hideous types that recently adopted Barbour.
Report Crisp77 November 22, 2011 7:30 PM GMT
I feel sorry for the Barbour wearers. it's the same situation that forced to stop wearing George of Asda garments a few years back.
