He was about 2 days off from his 85th birthday.  Had a good innings and a good life.

Some of the tributes on the BBC page are quite poignant.

"He was just a complete one-off. I think he was a bit of a lonely character as well. In the privacy of his own life I don't think he had very many friends."

Sir Jimmy's charity work was a "two-way street", adding: "He didn't have a family as such and so when he took on a charity, that became his family.

He was that bullseye target of the tabloids, someone who's a bit odd yet hugely successful. I'm sure if there was anything remotely dubious about him they'd have gone after him all guns blazing. I can believe that he was socially awkward and arrogant, but that nobody seems to have stuck the book in since his death and all sorts have come out to commend him.

I was listening to Radio Leeds this morning. They had a phone in about Sir Jimmy.

As it was a Leeds progrmme obviously many had met him, usually when he was donating his time to  hospital duties at St James Hospital. Nobody had anything bad to say about him.

One chap said that he bumped into Jimmy in the lift after he had been visting his mother who had not long to live. Jimmy asked which ward his mother was on.

Next time he visited his mother she told him that Jimmy had spent half an hour with her.

Sir Jimmy has done more for charity than there is time to list. A hugely compassionate man his work at Stoke Mandeville hospital is well known but he also has links with Broadmoor Hospital. During his life Sir Jimmy has indulged himself on a scale most people can only begin to imagine. He has no recollection of ever visiting a children's home in Jersey. Sir Jimmy's lawyers are the very best.

Amazingly Sir Jimmy never faced a single charge or spent even one night in prison. We knew. But apparently the PM, the Royal family, the police, the BBC either didn't know or chose to turn a blind eye.

He will always be Sir Jimmy Savile.
