Weekender was the one they'll be remembered for (and the one which i-Tunes continue to rip fans off over) but their entire first album just KILLED

Glossy - I've seen Shed Seven and Cast in each of the last two years, and I'm seeing Shed Seven again in December! I also called Power a "fúcking Red bástard" to his face after an acoustic set in 2008, but that's another story...

I'm loving Sleeper at the moment. Absolute Radio 90s plays some guff, but it's got a lot of gems - including Louise Wener Love

HaHa, good stuff. Used to love Cast - saw them several times around the mid nineties. Were a load more great bands of around that time that were tipped for greatness but just faded into obscurity.

Charlatans are hardly forgotten - still selling out mid size venues like Brixton and playing at the top, or close to it of the odd festival line up.

Squeeze however ....

The Charlatans are on about their 10th albumn aren't they? i'm sure they tour well to as do the Cult(when Astbury isn't being Jim Morrison)

Whatever happened to Then Jericho? tipped up as the next U2 in their day and had some decent singles

the Cult(when Astbury isn't being Jim Morrison)

His American accent, even using it to talk to the audience, makes me cringe.

The singer from Then Jericho has a manky leg and drinks in the bars around Tooting Broadway, and last year got his head kicked in by local ruffians. His house has mock-tudor beams, the only one in its terrace that does.

I haven't seen them since they were biggish, but Shed Seven have a rep for being fantastic live these days. Little pushing of new material, lots of belting out what everyone wants to hear.

Good on 'em.

The original poster is the winner though - I really liked Marion. They were hardly a big name at the time though. I remember people looking through my CD collection when I first went to uni, and not one of them had heard of Marion, even 'indie' kids who you would have thought might have.

Seen 'em last few years, going again in December, they're still awesome.  Like you say, it's a greatest hits tour and they don't bother singing owt new, mainly because I think they just reform for this tour every year and don't write owt new!

Saw The Bluetones last month.  Still love 'em.  They should make this list.

I see The Passions got a mention. They were an odd band. Hard to believe I'm In Love With A German Film Star was recorded by the same Barbara and Claire who earlier worked in the Rough Trade record shop.

I've got a fanzine from 30+ years ago, called Things In General, issue 2, which features an interview with The Passions and the claim "They don't believe the songs should contain any direct political message." And then: "The one obvious anomaly is 'Ireland's War', which includes the line 'I don't grieve for Airey Neave or any other Brit.'"Shocked

From that to Top Of The Pops was a shock at the time.

Incidentally, the cast list from that fanzine is a roll call of Great Bands That Time Forgot:

The Passions
Swell Maps
Delta 5
The Modettes

There's an interview with the Bunnymen from a time when they still looked destined to be The Misunderstood of their generation. There's even a review of a gig at The Marquee by "John's Boys", the unsurpassable unpleasantness of which is vividly described and at odds with the claims of a Jam fan I know who reckons it was the best gig ever.
