Small potatoes, at one time Norwich had as many as 600 public houses and even as late at 1900 there were some 561.

Are there still that many boozers open around that area Winkle? in Manchester and it's suburbs i'd conservativly estimate that about 70% of all the old boozers are now closed often 90%+ in some areas and not just in immigrant areas.
Used to drink nr London Bridge (sarf so not your patch)The Grapes was a decent boozer as was the Shipwrights and also in southwark,The George etc and few v old boozers but went back there few months back and mainly empty or closed.Kings head nr borough market was ok too, give or take the odd confused tiddly wink tourist asking for a "lard of British oldie ale beer" The London brisge area has changed that much on the front though(literally opposite the south bank side tower bridge)went into what we thought was a proper old town boozer called somat like "the mug arms" (good betfair name!) yet it was all mockerney, olde wordle fake job full of benders and people sipping chablis..i ask ya finks aint what they used to be! |

Somebody posted a photo of the Mug Tavern on here the other day. I think it was under London Bridge.
The top half of my post is the pubs that were still open 6 years ago when I moved out. The closure of the docks killed a lot off and the influx of non-drinkimg asians has killed off a lot more. Pubs with dart teams tend to do better than others, if the dart leagues still exists in Newham. I played on Wednesdays on a standard board and Thursday on a 5 board. At least 6 of the pubs I played in from 1987 to 1996 are no longer trading. A lot of the team players were in their late 30s and older. So, by 2007, the young'uns were in their 50s, and there were no youngsters taking any interest in darts, it was all pool with them. A lot of players were self employed, and if business died off they never came out to play their matches. I stopped playing the 5 board 3 years before I stopped playing the standard board as I found it boring. Some doughnuts on here will tell you how wonderful Newham is (like James Beckton) but they drink in pubs in places like Camden. |

That's it "The Mug Tavern" yeah it's right under the actual bridge, the bit nr there is actually full of some serious old fascinating titbits of old London.Never fairls to amaze me that bog eyed tourists wander up and down Tower Bridge seemignly oblivious of the Tower of London only yards from their feckin noses! Then again on the exact opposite side of the rd to Londons ancient site is a huge advertising hoarding saying (in graffiti)"you are entering Sharia law"!! I wonder if Tower Hamlets has any boozers left at all?

There are more muzzies in Newham than in Tower Hamlets.
23% of the population in 2002, (2nd highest concentration of muzzies in the UK) along with 36 mosques. Did you know that mosques don't pay council tax, I don't know if churches do. |

The Sultan E13. Plaistow. Demolished 2000s. The best pub in Plaistow in its day.
Didn't that used to be run by Joe Brown's old man? |

My gf's aunty lives in Corporation Street in Stratford and we'll probably stay there for a few days when the Olympics are there.
This Mr W's Handy Pub Guide should be quite helpful in finding a decent boozer while I'm there. [:(] |
