=====================================

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now

In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed

"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled

In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now

"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
And I naturally fled

In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

It’s a problem the English have.

The English are terrified of naked emotion.

“They find naked emotion embarrassing so they like their art covered with knowingness, irony, camp humour - anything but doing it like you actually mean it....until it hurts, like it takes to make art that's in any way compelling.

But no, just smother it in sequins and introversion and watch the fey, angsty posers come running.

How dare you describe me roger.  Consider yourself BUTLERED!!!

but.... Pavarotti and Nessan Dorma is the tear jerker for me. Some of his old recordings - he holds the notes so well.
Some don't get opera then one day - bang it hits you.
You have to have a heart of stone not to be affected by La Boheme - try the  O soave fanciulla duet!!!

Some pop, rock (deep purple) etc etc is rather good, but they are up against soloists, a chorus and orchestra in a performance.
But then so have deep purple done this!! and a few others.(with orchestra)
Queen another good outfit.
and of course mcartney/lennon

Geshwyn natuarally

Gorecki a more modern 'song writer' brilliant.

Derek Doyle    (derek who!!??) more a composer than a song writer as such. Check out what he is behind musically

I have drifted and realise this is more about modern pop/ rock etc than other genres although it shouldn't be.

akabula you demonstrated what you know about music previously.
You said you never heard of Damien Dempsey, but you were a huge fan of The Dubliners.....
Damien Dempsey had been playing with them for years sunshine.
Go have a read of Damien's Wikipaedia page, you might learn something about his talents.
You were saying before you didn't rate Damien's work either....
Another great piece of judgement from you...go read about all the singer/songwriters that rave about Damien's work.
It's also laughable that you don't rate Morrissey as a songwriter which is the title of this thread. The bloke is widely regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of our generation.
And that average Irish singer you talked about, shows how much you pay attention...he is a singer/songwriter, writes all his own songs.
David Keenan his name is and he's just turned 22. He will be embarking on a tour in November with Damien Dempsey...and he has yet to release his debut album. But I have seen him live many times, and I can tell you he is one of Ireland's greatest singer/songwriters of all-time.
His song "The Friary" is a classic by the way, as is "Matchbox", "Ramblin" and "El Paso"...
And when I talk about music you should do yourself a favour and listen...
Report akabula November 1, 2015 8:28 AM GMT
Yes I did say I was a big fan of the Dubs but only up and until Ronnie bowed out.
neither Paddy nor Patsy could fill his shoes and they were never the same.
The last time I viewed them, and it was online, Patsy a d Gerry O'Connor were in the line up and they were accompanying Imelda May.
As regards DD he may have joined them onstage but he was ever a member.
BTW I never attacked his writing skills merely his singing style which I don't like.
As regards DK I find him totally boring.
As regards your last remark well that's just laughable. If you like it then so should everybody is what I took out of that.

Everyone thus far to post hates Noel Gallagher but the sales of albums, singles and concert tickets will paint a completely different picture. Everyone can have their opinion but surely even if you hate him and his music, people must realise that he just isn't for them but the mass do think he is a good songwriter.

On a personal level I think Morrissey was absolutely Pony. I think Albarn is a very clever guy and he has created many well written songs, on several different levels. I never give it a great deal of time and thought for who writes the songs just what I enjoy tapping my foot to
Report Roger De Bris November 3, 2015 2:09 PM GMT
And who's Gallagher's hero??? F*cking Morrissey.......in awe of being allowed into his circle for a pint he was.....

Sales of albums & singles mean jacks*it to the music boffins....you'll be telling us Ed Sheeran has sold a lot of singles next.......

As the man below said these are pointless threads because everyone has their favourites, but one thing that will help you appreciate singer/songwriting a bit more is to have wriiten your own songs for many years from scratch on a guitar, piano whatever.....and compare them to other songs....a good exercise would be to write down the lyrics of other songs and analyse them.....

And Noel Gallagher would laugh if somebody told him he was a better singer/songwriter than Morrissey..

I enjoyed the banter lads but I must get back to work so I'll leave you with a verse from one of the greats:

"Well I'm leaving, I must be going. I'm flying, I'm flowing to a land beyond these laws.
Make my way up a slip road, the trees lose their leaves, they are weeping for my cause.
Yes, from town to town, my feet will scrape the ground, I'm gonna sample all your wares.
Coast to coast, as the cities boast, I'll trade my stories with your stares."
