I have read two books that were recommended from this forum and now i am looking for a third.

Book 1: Masters of Death: The SS-Einsatzgruppen and the Invention of the Holocaust Richard Rhodes

A chilling book but well worth a read.

Book 2: Inside The Third Reich Albert Speer

Man seven hundred pages. Once you get through the early parts about architecture this book is very good. Some of Hitler's quotes and comments are classic.

For book three i'm looking for a decent account of the eastern front. Any suggestions?

This is the part where I love you too much
This is as hard as it gets
'Cause I'm getting tired or pretending I'm tough
I'm here if you want me
I'm yours you can hold me
I'm empty and taking and tumbling and braking

[Chorus] :
'Cause you don't see me
And you don't need me
And you don't love me
The way I wish you would
The way I know you could

I dream a world where you understand
That I dream a million sleepless nights
But I dream a fire when you're touching my hand
But it twists into smoke when I turn on the lights

Len Deighton's Blood, Tears and Folly is the most eye-opening history book I have ever read about the period.

It restricts itself generally to the 1939-41 period, and the events of the preceding decades and centuries which led men all over the planet to act with such stupidity 70 years ago.

Every single page provides a revelation or some new insight which makes you think, "I never knew that," or "that puts a different slant on things."

I've only just started to read this book and so far it is proving to be everything that i hoped it would be. For those that judge Mr Hitler by his latter years then you MUST read this book. It's early days and i am just about to start chapter three but it is clear that this individual was no mug as often portrayed, quite the opposite. Many have been quick to say that this book is unreadable, this in my opinion is just another attempt at trying to ignore at what is written here mainly because of denial denial.
I often find myself chuckling to some of his quotes and the way he sums things up. Cracking stuff.Happy

Funniest quote so far:

Sometimes it went so far that one of these fellows, acting like a sewage pump, would shoot his filth directly in the face of other members of the human race.

Jeez did that guy Hitler ramble on about the Austrian/Hungarian monarchy or whatever. Think i got to the 150 page mark and gave up and the book ended up in the bin. I now regret this though as i would like to have another go at reading it. Maybe one day i'll buy another copy but i doubt it, it really is hard work! One thing that i did learn from the book is how Hitler first came in contact with Jewish people and the reason for his loathing of them. The reason being very different to what the leftist media portray and much more realistic.
An average person could not write a book like that imo so it seems more and more that Hitler was either nuts or a genius. He certainly believed in what he preached though and one thing this book shows is his enthusiasm and passion for politics. An incredible state of mind this man was in during this period.

So, two years down the line and i'm ready to have a go at another recommendation from this forum and hopefully a bit more light hearted entertainment.

The book is an excellent read although the story of the constant struggle of the German soldiers can become a little weary. A very good book on the battle of Stalingrad.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0297768107/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of World War II.

The story of Hermann Goring is fascinating from start to finish and is told excellently by the author Leonard Mosley. Hermann Goring led a very interesting life from his early childhood days right up to his suicide. The book seems to off answered nearly all the outstanding questions I had about this era and it truly is worth a read if you have any interest in this period.

I believe this book was first published in 1974 and at the time Hermann Goring's 'proclamation' which was written just before his death was locked away and never released. Has this ever been released since?

Fascinating to read that Hermann Goring had a detailed plan to go through Spain and occupy Gibraltar and northern Morocco straight after the fall of France. The plan was to cut Great Britain's Mediterranean trade routes to the Empire and force Britain to the negotiation table thus freeing up the German forces for the attack on Russia.
The plan also involved invading northern Libya and I think Greece.
I've never heard of this planned attack which in my opinion seemed to be plausible. Arrangements were made but Hitler decided against it at the last minute in favour of attacking Russia.

Funny this thread should be resurrected just after I'd watched The Battle of Stalingrad, from the World At War series on the History channel last night. I remember being fascinated by this when I was young. Would love to watch it now from start to finish. Must be one of, if not the best documentary series ever produced.

^^^^The World At War is always being shown on the Yesterday channel. Next episode 6pm today.

If you set a series link, it won't take long to get all of them.

Thanks Gin. It might have been the yesterday channel I was watching & not the History channel. My wife was out last night & I had control of the remote for a change. She's just come in from work and set it to record for me - lol.
