Laurence Rees' books are an absolute must.
1) The Nazis, a warning from history 2) Auchwitz, the Nazis and the final solution. The best two war books I've read. |

As a huge fan of the Fuhrer it is a must that i read this book and i regret not doing so earlier in my life. I look forward to the hilarious quotes and summing up that only Hitler can do. It seems that there are one or two versions of Mein Kampf but this edition is supposed to be one of the better English translations. I will post my thought on reading this book. I've only just started to read this book and so far it is proving to be everything that i hoped it would be. For those that judge Mr Hitler by his latter years then you MUST read this book. It's early days and i am just about to start chapter three but it is clear that this individual was no mug as often portrayed, quite the opposite. Many have been quick to say that this book is unreadable, this in my opinion is just another attempt at trying to ignore at what is written here mainly because of denial denial. I often find myself chuckling to some of his quotes and the way he sums things up. Cracking stuff. ![]() Funniest quote so far: Sometimes it went so far that one of these fellows, acting like a sewage pump, would shoot his filth directly in the face of other members of the human race. ![]() |

Well i never did finish Book 5 :Mein Kampf - The Official 1939 Edition (Third Reich from Original Sources)
Jeez did that guy Hitler ramble on about the Austrian/Hungarian monarchy or whatever. Think i got to the 150 page mark and gave up and the book ended up in the bin. I now regret this though as i would like to have another go at reading it. Maybe one day i'll buy another copy but i doubt it, it really is hard work! One thing that i did learn from the book is how Hitler first came in contact with Jewish people and the reason for his loathing of them. The reason being very different to what the leftist media portray and much more realistic. An average person could not write a book like that imo so it seems more and more that Hitler was either nuts or a genius. He certainly believed in what he preached though and one thing this book shows is his enthusiasm and passion for politics. An incredible state of mind this man was in during this period. So, two years down the line and i'm ready to have a go at another recommendation from this forum and hopefully a bit more light hearted entertainment. Book 6: Hitler's Table Talk: His Private Conversations, 1941-44 Ordered this morning ![]() |

WW11 is not short of documentation ,there must be a plethora of books to choose from .
Is there a decent book on WW1 ,factual accounts from people present ,or even a German account in English ? Hitler was involved in WW1 ,there is some ambiguity about how he ended up in the Bavarian Army and not the Austrian Army https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_career_of_Adolf_Hitler Has anyone a decent book recommendation for WW1 ? anyone read a decent one ? |

Book 1: Masters of Death: The SS-Einsatzgruppen and the Invention of the Holocaust Richard Rhodes
A chilling book but well worth a read. Book 2: Inside The Third Reich Albert Speer Man seven hundred pages. Once you get through the early parts about architecture this book is very good. Some of Hitler's quotes and comments are classic. Book 3:'The Forgotten Soldier' Guy Sajer Finished the book this morning. Overall i have enjoyed this book and its well worth a read. I learnt quite alot reading this book. It is however a book about struggle and hardship from start to finish. Book 4:Joseph Goebbels: Life and Death I did read this book but it was a tough read and just about worth it. You have to be a fan of WWII to get into this though. Was it really nearly three years since i ordered this. Fecking A. I think it took me nearly six months to read after some stop starting. Book 5 :Mein Kampf - The Official 1939 Edition (Third Reich from Original Sources) http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/1908538694?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 Well i never did finish Book 5 :Mein Kampf - The Official 1939 Edition (Third Reich from Original Sources) Jeez did that guy Hitler ramble on about the Austrian/Hungarian monarchy or whatever. Book 6: Hitler's Table Talk: His Private Conversations, 1941-44 Not sure what happened to this book. Think i started to read it but found it boring so ditched it. Book 7: Lost Honour, Betrayed Loyalty https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/184832748X/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Finished reading this book today. A very good book and well worth a read if you have an interest in the Easter Front. An easy read. Next book? Think i have just about exhausted reading about WWII and the Eastern Front. However for my next and maybe last WWII book i think i am going to go for: The Cruel Hunters - S.S.Sonderkommando Dirlewanger: Hitler's Most Notorious Anti-Partisan Unit This book is on a subject about as low as you can get as a human-being so should be interesting! |

I enjoyed Max Hastings’ All Hell Let Loose and his Overlord: D Day and the battle for Normandy was very, very good too. Apologies to the OP as neither focus on the eastern front but as stand-alone books about WWII they’re both well worth a read.

Book 8: The Cruel Hunters - S.S.Sonderkommando Dirlewanger: Hitler's Most Notorious Anti-Partisan Unit A little disappointing. This books contains very detailed lists of S.S.Sonderkommando Dirlewanger actions but not much in detail of the action, mainly as there were hardly any survivors from this unit and those that did survive denied being a member. All in all though a fairly decent read. Book 9 i have just started to read Stalingrad by Antony Beevor. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0141032405/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Already I am impressed with the layout of this book and find it easy reading. I thought I may of exhausted my knowledge on WWII and particular the Eastern Front but this book is very interesting. Will report back when fully read. |

Book 9 Stalingrad by Antony Beevor. https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0141032405/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 The book is an excellent read although the story of the constant struggle of the German soldiers can become a little weary. However I highly recommend this book and believe it to be very insightive and accurate on the events of the battle and the effects on those who fought it. A very good book on the battle of Stalingrad. Book 10 Reich Marshal: Biography of Hermann Goering https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0297768107/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 This book is by far the best book I have ever read on the subject of World War II. The story of Hermann Goring is fascinating from start to finish and is told excellently by the author Leonard Mosley. Hermann Goring led a very interesting life from his early childhood days right up to his suicide. The book seems to off answered nearly all the outstanding questions I had about this era and it truly is worth a read if you have any interest in this period. I believe this book was first published in 1974 and at the time Hermann Goring's 'proclamation' which was written just before his death was locked away and never released. Has this ever been released since? Fascinating to read that Hermann Goring had a detailed plan to go through Spain and occupy Gibraltar and northern Morocco straight after the fall of France. The plan was to cut Great Britain's Mediterranean trade routes to the Empire and force Britain to the negotiation table thus freeing up the German forces for the attack on Russia. The plan also involved invading northern Libya and I think Greece. I've never heard of this planned attack which in my opinion seemed to be plausible. Arrangements were made but Hitler decided against it at the last minute in favour of attacking Russia. |

Funny this thread should be resurrected just after I'd watched The Battle of Stalingrad, from the World At War series on the History channel last night. I remember being fascinated by this when I was young. Would love to watch it now from start to finish. Must be one of, if not the best documentary series ever produced.

^^^^The World At War is always being shown on the Yesterday channel. Next episode 6pm today.

If you set a series link, it won't take long to get all of them.

Thanks Gin. It might have been the yesterday channel I was watching & not the History channel. My wife was out last night & I had control of the remote for a change. She's just come in from work and set it to record for me - lol.
