He was in Las Vegas a week ago for the 5th anniversary of the cirque de soleil Beatles show at The Mirage. Amazing he is still touring 50 years on from when The Beatles first got together as a group.

I know Ringo is also out on tour this year, he was probably the least talented of the 4.  And as Lennon said once, "He's not even the best drummer in The Beatles"
Report SweetFa • June 18, 2011 12:11 PM BST
Lennon was joking when he said that, but people have always remembered it. Ringo couldn't sing, and didn't write very good songs, but he was an extremely good drummer.

I also seem to remember a single to do with a picture that I found rather good at the time.

His drumming :-
Starr was picked as the fifth-best drummer of all-time by Rolling Stone readers, behind drummers such as John Bonham, Keith Moon and Neil Peart.

Not a fact, facts.

Listen to "A day in the life", or "Something".
George Martin made special mention on several occasions about how Ringo Starr crated breaks and rhythms which weren't written into the songs.

Ringo the legend IMO. Keeps his head down, makes more money than anyone can imagine and manages to avoid dodgy women. And he has the coolest name. Cool
Report BonVivvy • June 18, 2011 6:51 PM BST
Starr was actually a very profficient drummer indeed, kept perfect time, hardly flambouyant but that's nothing whatsoever to do with ability. He had the pretty rare ability to keep constant tempo,v few drummers can do that nowadays and studios just use digital technology to edit recordings.

Lennon paid him the finest of compliments about his timing"If I get a thing going Ringo knows where to go, just like that…”..you find me a lead singer/songwriter with the cersatility of a Lennon who could say that about his resident drummer!

Whatever his talent, Ringo hasn't done bad, made millions and ended up with a Bond girl !

He never asked to join The Beatles.  George Martin asked him to join the group, after Martin found the drumming of Pete Best inadequate.

Ringo will be 71 next month, he was the oldest Beatle.

No, it's just a stupid conspiracy theory which abounds on the internet and which has not a single grain of correctness.
But as with all such theories, some people have chosen to embrace it and won't be swayed.

I really don't get all the hate here and in this country.

He is practically worshipped as a god, throughout the rest of the world.
He is probably one of a about 20 Englishman that has changed the world (for the better) and in his twenties, furthermore.

A stunning legacy and will probably still be talked about in 500 years time.
Report kenny mann • June 18, 2018 11:11 PM BST
correct, Poppy'. Undoubtedly the best musician/writer/composer of the last 60 years or so, and probably beyond that.
Report STUDYFORM • June 18, 2018 11:41 PM BST
Completely agree, poppy.
You still hear nearly every musician/songwriter mention how much they were influenced by him and the Beatles as a whole.

The hate thing, is I think, a sort of 'cool' badge for some.

I met a bloke who came into my work a few weeks ago and who happened to hear me practising a Beatles thing on the keyboard, I didn't know anyone was there.
(not that I usually have it at work). Anyway, it turn out that he was a top Oboeist who played with a few top orchestras and told me about how he worked a couple of times, in the 60's and 70's, with Paul McCartney, I was a bit awestruck,, frankly. He said McCartney was just driven, very hard working and precise, he had his idea of how every single part of a piece should sound, each instrument, each player. He was every bit the musical genius some of us think him to be.

I lived about 1/4 of a mile from his house for about 5 years, it's a fairly unremarkable little house in a very unremarkable street, but coachloads of tourists stop every day to take pictures of it.
Some of the places he wrote about - Penny lane, for example (where we used to shop often) are not at all remarkable either, but with his song writing abilities he gave them a life they didn't have, or at least one you can no longer see.

I would love to meet him. More than anyone else in history, I think.

Absolutely incredible. There aren't enough superlatives.
Me and my mate, (my son plays instead these days) have played about 90% at parties, gigs, busking or just for fun.

I know it wasn't a real song, but I didn't notice "Her Majesty" there - actually it would have been at the end, which would have spoiled it a bit.
Report kenny mann • February 12, 2018 3:25 PM GMT

Here, there and everywhere seems to be missing, too.
Report STUDYFORM • February 12, 2018 7:37 PM GMT
I think it was there Kenny - The intro:
To lead a better life
I need my love to be here

I didn't notice Octopus's Garden though.

There weren't any of the ones they wrote for others, like:
Mary Hopkin, Cilla Black, Badfinger, Peter & Gordon and so on.

There aren't enough words - I can't see how the sheer variety can be approached.
Maybe Queen got 10% of the way there.
Report kenny mann • February 12, 2018 8:06 PM GMT
The author gave this reason for leaving Her Majesty out.

"Yeah, I missed that on purpose... I heard it's a Paul Mac solo track without the others knowing or caring... imagine including Imagine? or Band on the Run? or Isn't it  Pity? etc.."

He's right imo some of Wings stuff was astounding. Dozens of them, Mamunia suddenly sprang to mind.

Loved them at 15, still loving them at pushing 53 years later

Macca's still touring and getting cute girls coming up on stage, wanting their bodies autographing. He even let this young girl play bass with him.

I lived for 5 years about 1/4 of a mile from his house.
A not very special council house in a back street in Allerton.

There's a blue plaque on the wall.

Coaches drive past it full of tourists taking photos.

My personal feeling is (and I might well be wrong) that they weren't especially nice blokes.
The music and the chemistry though.... unsurpassable.

As a little kid in the late 60's, I was quite into current music and my aunt (only 8 years older than me) bought all their records when they came out. I then inherited them as she got whatever "this week's top hits" were.

A bit scratched now, my son still has them.

The final of a prestigious county cup competition had to be abandoned when violence flared in a row about etiquette, it was said.

Astonished onlookers described how they saw one middle-aged player square up to another and inflict a headbutt.

They said the victim fell down, breaking a finger, and the aggressor was restrained – but angrily wriggled free to have another go.

The bust-up was said to have come after one player muttered a remark just as a rival was taking his turn at Atherley Bowling Club in Southampton.

The club was hosting the final of the Hampshire County Cup between teams aged in their 50s and 60s from Boscombe Cliff, near Bournemouth, and Portsmouth-based Southsea Waverley.

A witness to the incident said: “Everyone there saw the Boscombe player headbutt one of the Southsea players.

“He was restrained by some of the guys, but broke free and tried to hit out a second time.

The altercation – described as “unpleasant”– was said to have left Boscombe Cliff “embarrassed and disappointed”.

The match was called off and Southsea Waverley were handed the trophy.

The players resolved the row between themselves and no police or medics were called to the club.

Southsea Waverley’s secretary Peter Aldridge said: “I’ve been told there was a physical act against one of our players.

“The argument was something about the etiquette during play.

“Our player took an injury to the finger, he broke it when he fell. He’s okay now and just wants to forget it. Boscombe Cliff have accepted their player was out of order, they declined to play on and we won the trophy. It was very unpleasant and Boscombe were embarrassed and very disappointed by it all.”

Boscombe Cliff’s secretary refused to comment.

A message on the Bowls Hampshire website stated simply: “Congratulations to Southsea Waverley who retained the County Club Championship with victory over Boscombe Cliff in the final.”
