As a Scot, I'm slightly mystified by the depth of feeling the Welsh have for their neighbours. Is it just a 'little brother' inferiority thing, or is there more to it? Even the Jocks, Micks, Krauts and Frogs don't hate the English as much as the Taffs.

I had a conversation about this not that long ago, nobody in my company had a Welsh mate and we all have pretty much been around the world between us several times, it cannot be just a coincidence. I went to Cardiff to watch England play at the Arms Park, it was probably the worst weekend ever and that is truly saying something.

I think it is a "little brother inferiority thing", England is Wales' only shared border so in theory their nearest and only rival..

I met an old lady of about 70 in a Welsh village some years ago. She was selling her house to move out because her husband had died and although she'd lived in the village for 50 years and spoke welsh the locals now considered her an outsider and let her know she should move back to England.

I'm English and I've lived in both Scotland and Wales, and I'm talking years not months, and made some really good friends in both countries but I have to say that in my experience the jocks are by far the worst as far as the 'hating' goes.
In N Wales you just get ignored and/or the conversation in a pub, say, will turn from English to Welsh in a heartbeat if they smell an Englishman. The jocks are much more in your face but to be fair they don't go around burning English folk's houses down. |

I married a Scotish girl, never had a problem with them ever.I'm from Irish stock and we and I get on with everyone but I cannot be doing with the Welsh. Too many chips on too many shoulders for my liking.

It's obvious really, Im suprised anyone has to ever ask. England is seen as the United Kingdom. The rest ( Scotland, Wales, NI) are just seen as insignificant in the eyes of the rest of the world. We have the best football teams, we have the best of everything in general. We are bigger in ever sense in England. Thats how the avereage Scot/Welshman sees it, thats how the world sees it, and as someone said earlier that breeds jealousy and envy. It is only natural.

speaking for myself i like the english and am often bemused by them, for instance the attempt to celebrate new years 2000 by failing to set fire to the thames.

there quite entitled to their opinion, maybe its because of the english arrogance, and the fact that for centuaries you have done nothing but take, giving is not in your nature.
frankly your a shower of selfish self centred tw@ts, and your under an illusion if you think the english are liked anywhere other than england, take the blinkers off the scots just tolerate you, the irish despise you, the welsh despise you, the continentals despise you, even the french dislike you, and still you think your the good guys. right now your troops are responsible for hundreds of deaths a week on foriegn soils as your greed for other countries resources know no bounds, hundreds of thousands have died in foriegn lands to satisfy your greed for others resourses and still you wonder why as a nation you are despised the world over, and even after me telling you without any sugar coating, you will still believe your a great caring nation. truth is the vast majority of you do not even know your neighbours names, thats how community spirited you are, thats how caring as a society you are. and thats why you condone your soldiers actions abroad so as YOU can have a better standard of living. I think much of it is down to the misguided superiority complex that many English suffer from, which makes them disliked in many many parts of the world, not just Wales.

I think you'll find its British troops fighting abroad, not English. Or are you saying that the Welsh, Scottish, Irish and non UK nationals serving and dying in the armed services don't count?

ENGLAND elected Thatcher, because she made the right noises about making England stand for something again - even when her little Englander mentality meant arislicking the Yanks, sticking the finger up to our European neighbours, and shafting the rest of the UK.
Similar to Italy voting for Forza Italia and the French electing Jean Le Pen. Maybe one day - like the yanks - the English will get down off their high horse and realise that the´re no better than anyone else. |

harry soldiers are very brave lads.
they join up for many reasons, most to get a decent wage and a trade, your squaddy has no choice in where he is sent, to do what he is trained to do. plenty of manx lads join up, plenty are killed. its their choice to sign up, its the british governments choice to use them as armed thieves. |
