And after they arrested VT and got access to his flat they could bring the hole back in and see if it matched from his side.... I think this must have been the clincher that led to them bringing charges!

Last night police said Mr Jefferies, who was Jo's landlord, "remains on bail". A spokesman for the Avon and Somerset force said: "The situation has not changed."

In the Ipswich murders, the first guy who was arrested (Tom Stephens from Tesco?) was on police bail for nearly 6 months before bail conditions were cancelled.
Arrest of Suspects
On 18 December 2006, Suffolk Constabulary reported that they had arrested a 37-year-old man on suspicion of murdering all five women.[1] The man was arrested at 07.20 at a house in Trimley St. Martin near Felixstowe, Suffolk.[37] The detention of the suspect was extended by magistrates by a further period of 24 hours, to the maximum of 96 hours allowed under English law.[38] On 19 December, at 05.00, police arrested a second suspect,[39] a 48-year-old, at a residence in Ipswich, on suspicion of committing murder.[39] The following day, 20 December, police were granted a 36-hour extension to question the second suspect in detention. On 21 December, a joint statement was issued by DCS Gull and Michael Crimp, senior prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in Suffolk, announcing that the second suspect identified as Steve Wright had been charged with the murder of all five women.[40] Police said that the first suspect, who was not officially named,[1] was released on police bail.[40] Bail conditions were cancelled on 6 June 2007 for the first suspect, as no more inquiries concerning the case were planned involving this person.[41]

Not an expert but would presume LL is still on bail as that he therefore remains under caution.
Reports say he has consulted lawyers re seeking compo for his "false" arrest and ensuing publicity and they don't want him stirring things up in the meeja when the case is still apparently at a delicate stage.

Agree Clouseau, was going to add myself that while he is on bail he is effectively being kept quiet.
The press will be all over him like flies to sh!t once bail restrictions are lifted.
Must admit imo, he didn't look like he wanted any dealings with the press when Sky reporter confronted him but that might be different now.

^ Now that VT has been charged it would make sense for police to cancel his bail, so Jefferies wouldn't remain a suspect. But as you say he is effectively being kept quiet.
But a leading criminologist has questioned why Joanna Yeates' landlord remains a suspect in her murder.
Professor Wilson, who has researched many murderers, including serial killer Fred West, Soham murderer Ian Huntley, and Suffolk strangler Steven Wright, said: "I've not heard that the landlord Chris Jefferies has had his bail cancelled, which could be seen as significant."
Not sure what he means "could be seen as significant", he hasn't had his bail cancelled so he is still a suspect. But surely if they wanted to, the police could stop him talking to the media and stirring things up. Because VT's court case won't start until at least 3 months time. So will he stay a suspect for next 3 months (?)
.

Yes, I pop back now and then. Fair comment. Usually to advise caution to the latest 'nailed on' suspect. But you were playing a silly little game unless your letter 't' was stuck!

High Profile/Complex cases take an age to come to court. The Soham Murders were in August 2002, as was Ian Huntely's arrest .The Trial was around November/December 2003.
Agree it is odd that the landlord is still on bail .If that is still the case when the trial begins Tabak could use 'the landlord did it' as his defence. And if Jeffries has not been cleared by then , his being on bail would support such a defence.
My guess is they will drop the bail conditions when things have quitened down a little from the media. They know they fked up by arresting him but clearing him quickly and completely just makes them look more culpable when the time comes to consider his wrongful arrest claim. Giving the impression that they needed to look long and hard before ruling him out makes the arrest seem more justifiable in retrospect.

Just seems a bit odd, you would expect the police to act quickly to end any misunderstanding in relation to Jefferies.
Normal practice to release other suspects from bail following a charge.

Hang on..... he's an architect/engineer, people flow expert...
Don't know how long he'd been his flat but he could have had plenty of time to wire up some arrangement whereby he secreted a button in his kithen which when pressed swivelled the bookcase in his bedroom around revealing the bricked up internal doorway which slid to one side and raised the false wall panel he'd put in on Jo's side..... in and out of there and no-one would be any wiser.
Only revealed after 3 days of extensive searching when the junior plod got told to go and put a brew on and pressed the wrong button.

naydam... I would imagine the front door would have a 'yale' type lock on it, therefore it would probably have been locked. I know that doesn't really answer the question though. I still have misgivings about why the BF was eliminated from enquiries almost immediately though..and I still have him in the frame, albeit as an outsider now, somehow involved in all this. And misgivings about the whole enquiry as well, they way police witheld so much info.. eg the sock, and other things.
er..its what they do. Its deliberate - you can more readily 'catch out' your suspect this way.

^^ Yeah but you don't withold it for weeks then ask the public for help finding it.
What undermined this investigation from the start was the police's utter conviction they had the landlord bang to rights. Then when the forensic cleared him, the police were back to square one but had allowed time for witnesses to forget, evidence to disappear and the real killer to cover his tracks.
I'm not sure about Dutch architect guy. The police seem a bit more circumspect in what they leak to the press. This may be a reaction to the landlord debacle but it might mean the case is a bit weak, with no smoking gun.

once somebody has been charged, hardly anything will be heard from the police.
It was CPS who advised A&S police that they had enough to charge and did not need a further extension for questioning.

As soon as someone is charged with murder I think the police should go before a fudge ( sorry judge ) and explain why they are not clearing any other suspects.

reading through the posts, i have a new theory, VT may have been in jo's flat for housewarming / to say hello and when she went to toilet he nicked the front door key. he could then enter the flat without leaving a trace of a forced entry

He was charged with her murder last week and appeared by video link for a preliminary hearing at Bristol Crown Court this morning.
Tabak, 32, appeared on screens in court, sitting behind a table with his hands together to listen to the proceedings.
Wearing glasses, a red jumper and dark trousers, the Dutch engineer spoke only to confirm his name and that he could hear the proceedings clearly.
Mr Justice Treacy, prosecutor Nigel Lickley QC, and Mr Fitton agreed the timetable for the trial.
At the conclusion of today’s proceedings, the judge told Tabak: ‘Your next appearance in court will be on May 4 by which time the case papers will have been served and you will see in detail what the allegations are against you.
‘There will be a hearing to make the final arrangements for a trial which we expect to take place in October.’

10 months seems a bit long for a case like this. Do they have evidence or not?
Or does a more rapid timeframe interfere with a family holiday the lead officer already had planned?

Given that he's innocent until proven guilty, and I'm guessing that he hasn't made a confession or the police would undoubtedly have leaked it, what's the legal situation regarding his job? Are they obliged to continue to employ him and keep paying him pending the outcome of the trial?

FROM the outside it looks like an upmarket Victorian townhouse in a leafy Clifton street.
But despite overlooking a primary school yard this house, in Royal Park, is in fact an adult playground.
With swinging and fetish parties as well as taster afternoons the £550,000 terraced house is the home of sex club Libertease.
The club, complete with dungeon with cross, stocks, wall chains and restraints, has been running for several weeks, and was set up by Dominic White who is understood to live at the address. Click here for more
Upcoming theme nights include Valentine Vamps and Greedy Girls nights according to the club's website.
Couples pay £15 to attend swinging parties which run from 9pm to 2am and are for members and by invitation only. Although Libertease does not have a licence to serve alcohol guests are invited to bring their own drinks.
On Tuesdays between 1pm and 7pm the club also advertises £25 Tease afternoons where members can "socialise, dress up and perhaps get make-up help from one of the Libertease girls". The price includes a buffet and tea or coffee.
Neighbours said they were surprised by the opening and had noticed increased numbers of people visiting the property as well as hearing loud noises.
Some said they were worried that the club could send out the wrong message about the area.
One 25-year-old who did not want to be named said: "I've lived on this street for about six months but I thought there was something going on.
"About two weeks ago one Saturday night I saw a girl leaving and she seemed quite drunk. It was about 10pm and she was wearing a large overcoat but it was clear she had sexy lingerie on underneath.
"I said to my flat mate that it seemed like some kind of fetish night or something.
"Since then I have seen others coming and going but not really paid much attention to it.
"I think there is a woman living upstairs and a man living downstairs but there isn't a connecting staircase apart from the one outside and there are always people coming and going between the two flats.
"We also heard a lot of strange noises, like awful sex noises, where it was obvious there were more than two people involved. To be honest I think it's quite funny and it's not really bothered us."
Another resident, in her 60s, said she was concerned about the effect the club would have on the quiet street.
She said: "I've not seen anything so far so it is obviously very discreet. I don't think a swingers club is wrong, what people do in their own free time is their business, but this is a residential street with young families and school children just opposite.
"I wouldn't want to think that more people would start coming here or setting up massage parlours or lap dancing clubs.
"It's a quiet neighbourhood, we don't want drunk people piling on to the streets at 2am or in the afternoons.
"I don't think Clifton is about to become the next red light district but I'd be worried about the sort of reputation a club like this would attract."
A website group, set up for those interested in the club, had 157 members.
An introduction to the club said: "Clifton Libertease is an adult swinging/swingers group that meets on a regular basis in a secluded Clifton townhouse.
"We also hold Fetish and TV/CD parties for the more adventurous.
"We will be holding our next parties from Jan 7 onwards so please keep an eye on what we're up to and we'll keep everyone informed as the party dates get arranged.
Dom and Michelle."
Royal Park, which is off Lansdown Road, surrounds two sides of Christ Church CE Primary School. Head teacher Louisa Wathan did not want to make a comment.
Although the property is a residential building it is understood that anyone who uses it for businesses purposes, for example charging to hold an event, would have to apply for a change of use licence. Bristol City Council said they were investigating the property and the business.
We attempted to contact Mr White for his comments regarding Libertease but we did not get a response.

The landlord of murdered landscape architect Joanna Yeates has been released from police bail without charge.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed Chris Jefferies was released without charge on Friday night, more than two months after his arrest.
Mr Jefferies, 66, was arrested on suspicion of Miss Yeates' murder on December 30, 2010 and released on bail on January 1.
He has previously told friends he was looking into the possibility of suing the police and sections of the media over their handling of the case.
The former English teacher's release came as he put his Bristol flat up for sale, setting the price at £245,000.
The estate agent confirmed to Sky News that the flat had been put on the market in the last week.
Mr Jefferies lived in a first-floor flat on Canynge Road and rented out a ground-floor apartment in the same building to Miss Yeates and her boyfriend Greg Reardon.
His property is located above Vincent Tabak's flat - the Dutch engineer who has been charged with Miss Yeates' murder and is due go on trial later this year.
