Into the Wild

4   stars!

Film4

The allure of the American wilderness is at the heart of this profoundly moving true story about amateur adventurer Christopher McCandless. In 1990, the 22-year-old college graduate abandoned his middle-class family and hitch-hiked across the country. His destination: a life of solitary contemplation in the snowy wastes of Alaska. Basing his screenplay on John Krakauer's bestselling biography, writer/director Sean Penn follows McCandless (played with tragic boyishness by Emile Hirsch) on his Thoreau-inspired quest to commune with nature. Penn's camera captures the grandeur of the American landscape magnificently, yet what really impresses is Hirsch's intuitive performance. His adventures on the road are offset by an intermittent voiceover from Carine McCandless (Jena Malone) detailing the impact of her brother's disappearance on their buttoned-down parents (the excellent William Hurt and Marcia Gay Harden). Celebrating McCandless's beatnik philosophy while refusing to ignore his inherent selfishness, Penn crafts an entrancing movie that is by turns uplifting and tragic.

GUBBED
Film4

The allure of a betting forum is at the heart of this profoundly moving true story about a 22-year-old anxious to discover which films are on over the Christmas period. The central character receives no end of friendly and helpful replies but is shadowed by a menacing stalker who unable to start threads of his own targets the hapless hero.
Writer/director Miles Claringbould at his best here, but look out for Martin Kemp's haunting performance as the sinister A1 Bionic.

I've just been channel flicking and have found a pearler - Patton - which is on '5USA' on Freeview: channel 31.

Unfortunately, there's only an hour of it left - but if any of you have that back-in-time contraption to watch it from the start, I can thoroughly recommend it.
Report s.kenbo • December 27, 2014 8:31 PM GMT
If Tom Cruise can play Jack Reacher then I have no problem with Idris Elba playing Bond, I might even watch it if he got the part.
