They spend the day over on the politics forum moaning about thatcher keeping them down.

Must asmit , while i am out and about i see more single  men NOT at work , noticed around 10 or 12  fishing today by the riverbank  ( thats well up on 12 months ago) , a few blokes also washing cars and walking the dog were observed at around 2.30 .

Won't be any jobs sweeping the streets. That's council work. 100,000 council jobs to go, so extra competition for vacancies.

Anyone looking to employ someone in West Lothian give me a shout,honest and reliable.

Unions got involved and stopped work going out to contractors,hence me losing my job

wur I do not think I could sign on,I do not plan to stay unemployed and I know it is old fashioned but I do not want to take money for sitting on my arse.

I will try for another couple of weeks then do some voluntary work to keep my self-esteem until something comes up.

I as my age implys am rather fortunate in that my mortgage is almost up,my wife brings in a wage we can live on albeit it is not a luxurious lifestyle by any means.

I will get a job,in my opinion by signing on I will resign myself to not getting a job something that to me is not a option.

I have health insurance, doesn't mean i am resigned to getting ill.

In all honesty if your that weak that by signing on you think you will be resigned to not getting a job, then your probably not a good prospect for a future employer

by signing on u get ur NI paid ,any breaks questions will be asked, long breaks and ur pension is shagged ,hth ..

^^^ above poster spot on i was unemployed for 7 weeks and i only went in there to keep my NI going. When I told them what i had saved i got some strange looks.

A1 I realise that you are a rather negative individual,I on the other hand prefer to be positive hence that at the age of 44 I have not had to ever seek employment.

I've had a total of 9 months out of work since the recession.  I'd put aside a small amount of time each week to contacting the agents about what work was out there, anything coming up etc etc, and 9 times out of 10 it was nothing, sorry.  Now and then I'd get a sniff of something but they were always long shots, in the end something came up and I had to relocate to do it but its ok.  I was on totaljobs and I signed on and everything and I did get a few days here a few days there working in local factories (12 hour night shift on minimum wage) and the job centre said that it wouldn't effect my benefit but it did.  The job centre did actually get me a job at the council but I hated it and the travel was sh1thouse. so I quit and in the end got this job on the south coast.  Hunky dory.
Most days I'd get up about 8ish breakfast, betfair then I'd walk sometimes 15 miles a day round the area stopping in pubs reading the paper etc.  Get home for a dinner with my olds and betfair/telly all night.  It would've been quite pleasant except I was basically a ponce and my money reserves were dwindling ((I always spent loads more than the jsa).  I've never been able to enjoy the free time you get when out of work because I've always been too stressed about not working.  I've always wanted to work but the ar se totally fell out of my game the last couple of years.  When I got laid off in 2008 I moved back in with my parents because I couldn't afford the rent.  I never even considered that the council might've paid my rent for me, I'd've stayed in St John's Wood if they'd've paid the rent, what a donut.

Hearts, if your wife's working, you probably won't qualify for benefits. But go and see them, anyway. You need to be on the unemployed register, to get you NI paid, if nothing else.

hello all ,my first post .im getting made redundant today from a major roadwork company in central london .i havent signed on for over 20 years .apparently from monday i become a lazy b and i dont want a job in selkirks eyes .hearts you should sign on .i for one will if i dont get a job for monday ,fingers crossed .i have paid over seventy pound a week stamp for the last few years so i will be claiming whats rightfully mine.

This thread has got me thinking.  When you get a mortgage can you pay a bit more each month as insurance so that your mortgage is paid even if you get laid off?  I'd always not wanted to bother with this because it is a con, but it would actually be quite a weight off my mind.  If the payments aren't too much I might try this out, it would certainly make unemployment that much better.

UTI, I DON'T KNOW HOW PEOPLE CAN SURVIVE BEING UNEMPLOYED IN LONDON, BECAUSE IT'S SO EXPENSIVE.

I'm a time served Millwright,I was made redundant 18yrs ago at the age of 46.
I could not get an interview for anything,couldn't get retraining & the dole stopped after a year.Fortunately thw wife worked so we got by,I haven't worked since except for my small business which I've been able to build up.
I feel genuinely sorry for those out of work & appreciate their feelings Especially if they are living in an area of high unemployment & are over 35.
Those of you who are employed & live in an area where there is work think yourselves lucky,don't knock the unemployed,who knows it could be you next.

The 16-18 year olds are starting out they can, to a point, choose a career and go for it.  I feel sorry for the older gents who only know one career and feel they are too old to train in something else.  If their industry has been fked it is much harder for them to change career.

When I was out for 7 months, and my resources dwindling, I was getting to the stage where I would have to rethink it all and change career/just do something different.  I'd largely resisted just going and doing a minimum wage job (I'd done all that when I was younger, working in factories etc and I hated it - I'd rather spend all my savings than do that again) and put all my hopes in contacting all the agents in London regularly and try getting back into the CAD Draughting game.  It paid off in the end, but I was very close to having to change career, something I really didn't want to do.  I could've probably got work of some sort in that 7 months, so technically I was a dole scrounger, but I was holding out for a job I wanted.  Don't feel particuarly guilty about it - I took the £60/week, but probably spend more like £150/week over that period.  I've paid the taxes so I'm entitled to it.  Yet, some may say hypocritically, I'm anti all this benefits culture, and excessive handouts.  As much as anything I don't think its good for people themselves to be living on handouts.

Take out mortgage insurance. We had ours with the Halfifax, and they give you the mortgage plus 10% (iirc - have to check with mrs winkle) and when I was made redundant they paid it for 3 months while I had no work. Saved me all the aggro and cost them over £3,000.

Aha an unemployment thread.

I can empathise with Hearts No 1. When i got made redundant following 20 years of continuous employment, i dragged my sorry ass to the dole centre. The dole not only patronises and demonises you, it destroys your soul. I couldn't stand the guilt and shame of being out of work so stopped going. Instead i jumped on a plane (nice redundancy pay off) and went travelling for many months.

Feck the dole, i signed up with local agencies and was back in work in no time.

That was 10 years ago. I posted an update on one of the IDS threads...

Being Unemployed, and having a medical condition (job restrictions are endless) are not entirely the same thing, yet both are now pigeon holed together.

The Chaser, no agency work for me, i'm another hopeless parasite feeding off benefits.
Cameron would have the likes of me put down, as would Farage.

Had no problem being taken on as a volunteer in a charity shop, but paid work - forget it!

Shouldn't be ashamed to sign on either. In addition to the free monies, you leave a stamp/trail to cover your gap in employment. When I found a new job mid recession they wanted 5 years history to cover me....the benefits office sent them the dates that I was getting JSA.

You can be skint, but if you live in a house with more than £100k of equity, you can't get Legal Aid.

And if you're on JSA, you obviously can't remortgage.

Im looking for full time work after graduating (I'm 34 15 years work experience) still can't find anything. Its all £6.50 ah hour job or specialist jobs with this and that qualification or managers roles wanting experience.

For example my degree was geog and environmental management so looked into united utilities and virtually all their jobs require a specific qualification or experience working on a waste water facility. Why would you have either? Why can't they just take people willing to to gain these qualifications in the role???

pug its manageable if u dont go bloody out, i havnt had a drink in near 4 weeks and im still skint lol, altho i feel a hell of a lot better

Or thinking about it why don't employers work better with universities.

Again for example offer students the chance to gain these sorts of qualifications. They could choose an industry they most favour and do all or at least some of the required qualifications as part of the course and included in the price!!

Whether it be in recycling, waste water or testing soil samples.

Why would you have either? Why can't they just take people willing to to gain these qualifications in the role???


Have you thought about applying to volunteer to gain that experience, I'm sure they'd be willing to take on someone for free for a while, and if they don't employ you, you still get a reference from them

Hi Scandanavian. I have, the jobs I ve been looking at want experience of working with land managers for example.

You can get experience as there are events at weekends where you can get experience working with the environment sadly I work weekends. One job working for the local council promoting the area and its wildlife. Would have been perfect although not great pay. I did nt have the necessary footpath building experience

defo bhoys but as i say if one of your electrical items is bust then you are totally screwed unless you can get a replacement on credit and just pay it up

all my experience is office based work but i want a change and do something different but its hard without any experience

just want a decent easy job for some regular coin

apart from the lack of money the dole isnt so bad as you have a lot of free time

trouble is no money to do anything unless your having good weeks on betfair

yea ur right there pug, even if you have a decent amount in betfair pug and ur not relly winning or losing u can dip into ur account now and again, but a big hit leaves u fooked, what would ur normal day of eating involve pug? I havent been drinking so ive had a few quid to buy bits and bobs for my flat, nothing much like just cuttlery and stuff

tea, toast and orange juice
cheese toastie and beans
spaghetti and meatballs/mash spuds and sausages/peri chicken and wedges

always buy fresh meat and try and cook from scratch. Easy to plan meals and save yourself a bit of cash

what u usually eat?

Porridge then scrabled egss, beans and toast with tea
1pm usually chicken sandwiches usng fresh chicken fillets from shop and cooked in the oven
5pm usually spuds, fish and veg but i have noticed tht is very dear using oven every day so hat ive done is cooked a massive pot of soup and also spuds and frozen them into conatiners to use during the week
Night usually tea and toast

I snack quite regurly on biscuits during the day, not EEEs mind

now that winter coming best sticking to the old winter warmers

will need to try making soup. How much does it cost you to make say a weeks supply of soup?

I dont buy tins whatsover mate, im not really sure mate im using a thing called econamy 7 were supposingly i get half price energy from 12 at night to 7am so i cook a massive pot early hours of morning 1 night, i used to make stew also mate, it efinatly reduced ur electric bill.

I rise at noon and then spend most of the day playing games: pool, poker, quizzes etc.  I also walk and read quite a bit.
