A woman who has announced departures and delays at a London railway station for 12 years has been appointed an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.

Susan Gibbs, 58, from Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, has been nicknamed the "voice of Fenchurch Street" because she has been heard by so many commuters.

The mother-of-two said she had never expected to receive such a recognition.

She described the honour as "just wonderful" and said her employer, rail operator c2c, had nominated her.

Mrs Gibbs said she thought commuters liked the fact she had a "distinctive" voice and believed they felt comforted by hearing her every time they passed through the station.

"They do like the same voice," she told BBC London.

"It's reassuring, especially if something goes wrong - then I can make announcements and it seems to reassure them.

I am very proud that Susan has received this honour, which is truly deserved

Managing director, c2c
"People like the same things every day."

The citation for Mrs Gibbs' MBE states that she is being recognised for services for public transport.

She is a "highly respected" member of staff, said Julian Drury, the managing director of c2c.

"I am very proud that Susan has received this honour, which is truly deserved.

"She really is the voice of Fenchurch Street and has a great rapport with our customers and her colleagues."

Mrs Gibbs said she was "so excited" about the prospect of going to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen.

"It's a great honour.

"I've never been a person who's had ambition, but now it feels when I'm no longer here I'll have made my mark."

"Mind The Gap"....

Now There's someone who deserves recognition!

He sits there every day, and must say it hundreds of times a day.

He even did it for The New Year fireworks.

'Mind The Gap'

is rarely used on London Underground.

There are probably more, but the only station I recall it used at on the District Line (the green one for non-Londoners) was Mansion House, where the platform is slightly curved.

That stops a lot of tube announcers from getting an honour.

'Mind the pickpocket'

'Mind the beggar'

and

'Mind the groper'

can be used at all stations.
