An advert issued by Northamptonshire County Council asking for a "female, white and non-Muslim" taxi driver has been labelled "deeply disturbing and outrageous" by a Muslim faith group in the county.
The Chronicle & Echo revealed yesterday that the council had issued the tender for private firms to bid for the contract, which would require them to transport a vulnerable child to and from school.

He said: "Having made the error, I am pleased to see that the council has swiftly apologised and promised to look into the matter.
"This advertisement discriminates on several fronts including gender, race and religion.
"I can accept the gender choice in some instances but the other two are outrageous and unacceptable and I see no reason to exclude non-whites or the people of a particular faith.
"I would be very keen to see just what the circumstances were to warrant such a specific requirement."
He added that the advertisement's specific exclusion of Muslim applicants was very damaging to the council's relationship with the Islam community in Northamptonshire.
He said: "Are we going to exclude a white female who is Muslim simply because of her faith?
"The fact that it makes specific mention of just the Muslim faith is deeply disturbing. This type of discrimination is totally unacceptable in our diverse society and particularly damaging to community relations."
A spokeswoman for Northamptonshire Police said no complaints about the advertisement had been received but added the force would investigate if the case was referred to officers.
A spokesman for the council said: "We're committed to carrying out a full review of this situation. That review will be conducted by the council's head of policy, who leads our equalities team, supported by our head of legal services.
"The review will examine the circumstances leading to the error as well as identifying what went wrong and what actions we need to take as a result."
The council has previously said there was no suspicion of anyone being deliberately discriminatory and that there were specific reasons for the criteria.

A council has apologised after it issued an advert for a "female, white and non-Muslim" driver to take a disabled child to school.
Northamptonshire County Council said it was launching an investigation after it issued the advert to private taxi companies.
It is understood the stipulations were made by the child's parents.
The advert stated: "The contractor must provide the escort. Please note that the escort must be female, white and non-Muslim."

Generally, it is illegal for employers to discriminate against job candidates on the basis of their gender, race, sexuality or disability.
An unnamed Muslim taxi driver told the Northampton Chronicle: "To say it is offensive would be very strong because I don't know the reasons behind it, but the council should not be issuing tenders like this, full stop. I was in total disbelief that it would make such a stipulation."

All seems fair enough. They messed up, and apologised. Not the end of the world.
They're still going to employ a white non-muslim female, so they may as well just advertise the fact that that's what they want and save everybody's time. Can't really see Abdul Abdiz's application getting further than the bin.
I dont think women can be taxi drivers in muslim countries, or Cumbria.

In areas that have experienced significant sexual abuse it is only reasonable for a parent to insist his girls are able to request a white female taxi driver for their own protection and peace of mind.
I get the impression that the Water-Park event is a one-off, rather than a weekly event. I'm also confused by the Dubai pictures...the people pictured seem to be, what I would call, normally dressed for such a venue.

The problem is that, as a taxi firm, they need to have employees who are acceptable to their customers. In the light of recent events all over the country, where taxi drivers and kebab wallahs have been deeply involved in child rape and abuse cases, one cannot be surprised when parents of non-muslim children specify that that they don't want any Muslim males to be in a taxi, alone, with their children, wives or girlfriends.
I would suggest that they are now unemployable in any area that includes contact with children...and it should stay that way until they sort out their religious views.

Not quite as simple as that Ebul. I agree that it is a generalisation but the problem is one of Islam, the way it is taught and its suitability to exist, in its present form, in the Western world.
It is bad enough that there will always be people with, what I see as, an unhealthy interest in children. There must be a hell of a lot of young (and old), male Muslims out there who are told by their religion that women who display flesh are harlots and should be treated as such. Given the fact that their religion affords no rights to their own women...what respect should be shown towards a harlot, and an Infidel harlot, at that!!
They need to rewrite this Koran into clear and understandable modern-day language. Far too much influence is exerted by individuals different interpretations of what passages may, or may not, actually mean. Similar to the chaos caused when the 'Holy Bible'(?) was translated from Latin so that people could read it for themselves and question its meaning and importance.
Islam is rightly afraid to do this because, in its Eastern form, it is not compatible with our Western culture.
Another huge problem is that you cannot trust them. Their religion accepts, even encourages, lying to Infidels in the furtherance of Islam. So, whatever he says to your face, a good Muslim will be lying.

In fact I think Western Societies do have a right to ask practising Muslims to abide by the laws and conventions of our society.

You're right. This is not a Muslim issue...it is an ISLAM issue. They need to sort out their propensity to treat women, especially young, vulnerable, drunk or scantily-clad (in their opinion) as valid targets for their predatory tendencies.
I totally disagree...they treat women how they want, but only in their own societies...not ours of course
