I will hold it on Nibbsy's all singing all dancing new quiz forum if anyone is interested please register your interest on here for a free point.  The number of questions is uncertain as yet but it willbe a minimum of 20.  The more interest shown, the more questions there are likely to be - the scoring system will also be amended to suit.  First time i've hosted (or even taken part in) a quiz on the new forum so at some point I'll have to giveit a trial run.  Any hints or tips about it gratefully received.

So please register your interest on this thread.

Report UTI May 29, 2010 7:24 PM BST
Well unfortunately you're the only one here who doesn't seem to suffer from lack of speed.  It just isn't conducive to quizzing at all anymore, which is a shame.
Report crags May 29, 2010 7:30 PM BST
I don't think many people are having trouble with slow speed now Confused

Anyway, good luck with your quiz.

Refresh speed on new forum = once per 3 seconds minimum

Crags - you're just making a complete fool of yourself.
Report crags May 29, 2010 7:44 PM BST
Nah, refresh is quick enough to do a quiz on here no problem at all. All the moaners are the ones who are making fools of themselves. Same as the start of the last new forum.
Report man of many moods May 29, 2010 7:49 PM BST
Nope. The refresh is nowhere near fast enough. Nor is the time it takes to submit a reply. And the space bar still doesn't work for refeshing.

Therefore no good yet for quizzing. Hence having to use a different forum for it. No choice.

Report UTI May 29, 2010 8:00 PM BST
I don't know the scoring system tonight pumpy, but I'm sure slower typists can be accommodated somehow.  The speed of the new place means time ups can be quicker than ever, and googling is almost impossible.

Im looking at 40 questions atm.

Which part of that don't you understand crags?

Let me know and I'll try and explain it in words of one sillybubble for you.
Report pumphol. May 29, 2010 8:03 PM BST
15 or 20 sec for a time up is fine its just if your not the quicket typer you have very little chance on most quizzes, but saying that I am no more than average on GK, some on here are really up to mastermind standard.

UTI, No- not in any way, shape or form.

But I do think that people who have enjoyed spending time on here, and indeed some who have made friends, gained employment and even met their partner...should show some loyalty to the forum and give betfair time to get it right. They are nearly there now. IMO.
Report UTI May 29, 2010 8:06 PM BST
Perhaps I'll do a 3-2-1-1-1-1-1-1 scoring system tonight - with quick timeups.  Could even do 1-1-1-1-1-etc, but that does allow copiers even with a quick time up.

Or I could even try Nirvana's ski jump scoring system.

... plus, I hate whingers in general [:p]
Report UTI May 29, 2010 8:10 PM BST
Well Crags, people have not left for good as far as I know.  I and many others still use it a lot.  But I'm afraid it is simply no good for quizzers and there was/is a massive quizzing community here (as you may have noticed).  It would be a real shame if there is a mass exodus, and quizzing aside there is no real reason.  Speed IS the main reason.  If a lone forumite (allbeit a very technically capable IT person) such as Nibbs can organise a free forum within days of this one falling below standard, then surely betfair should be capableof doing the same with their budget.  It is almost a month now.
Report man of many moods May 29, 2010 8:11 PM BST

Report UTI May 29, 2010 8:12 PM BST
Incidentally, does anyone know what happened to the leagues?  Is Nirvana still about?  Haven't seen him for a while (though tbf I've only been around on weekends).

I'm not a fan of whingers either Crags, but most of the complaints have been valid, and with a few exceptions constructive.
Report man of many moods May 29, 2010 8:13 PM BST
We have no choice but to give Betfair time to get it right. Something they should have done through proper testing before launching it.

In the meantime, we have no choice but to quiz elsewhere. Quite simple really.

The Leagues are on hold. They rely on speed. The new reply box function is excellent as far as that's concerned. A real time-saver. But the Refresh speed and Posting speed make it impossible to resume the Leagues at the moment.

As I see it Befair probably think the forum is 95% as they would like it, problem is when they have it at 100% it still will not be as good for quizzes as it once was though in all other aspects it will probably be fine.
Report UTI May 29, 2010 8:30 PM BST
Tommy, Fishy and Momm are all sound as a pound crags.  It is just frustrating for them and others to see everything change seemingly for the sake of change.  And in terms of quizzes it is catastrophic.  Whether or not betfair care about the quizzes or not is another matter, but they have been ruined on here - and this other forum is the only way.

How come the refresh on the main site is 10 times faster than the refresh on here?

Report Baggers May 30, 2010 12:22 AM BST
It says

waiting for community.betfair.com

then transferring data from community.betfair.com

Another reason for slowness is the drop downs

Do we really need:

Oldest/Newest 1st
5/10/20/40

Take the above two functions away and voila, faster forum
Report crags May 30, 2010 1:23 AM BST
Baggers, the main site and the forum are not married not even In-laws, more like third cousins twice removed.

Anyway, I suggest that you should use one of the advised browsers-IE 8 works fine for me- and also try using a prayer mat rather than a mouse mat.

HTH.

Why on earth is Betfair recommending IE8 for the Forum when the graphics for the buttons and the speech bubble are still screwed up in IE8?
Must be so simple to fix that yet it's been like it from day 1.

And why is Betfair recommending IE8 for the Forum and Firefox for the Main Site?
Does Betfair expect us to use a different browser for each?
Report UTI May 30, 2010 7:05 AM BST
Incidentally Momm, or anyone for that matter, do you know what has happened to a few of the regular quizzers.  I'm thinking Nirvana and Tobermory, but I'm sure there are many others who seem to have disappeared.  Did they make an announcement that they were leaving?  or are they just not on here asmuch.  Or have I just not been on at the same time.  I'm sure there are many others, because only 10 maximum took part in last nights quiz
Report man of many moods May 30, 2010 8:23 AM BST
There are a lot I haven't seen about in the last month. And a lot of the others just seem to make sporadic appearances.

When the new forum was launched it was immediately obvious that quizzing would have to go on hold for a few days, especially the Leagues. I don't suppose any of us envisaged that over four weeks later the forum would still be unusable for quizzes.

Not much we can do about it really. Momentum has now been completely lost. Mr Nibbs' chat room is a great interim alternative for multi-player quizzes but probably not much use to us for the leagues.

In the meantime, all we can do is hope that Betfair sort out all the remaining issues with all the different browsers and hope that players will reappear when we're ready to restart - if that day ever comes!
Report UTI May 30, 2010 8:39 AM BST
That is a shame momm, but why is nibbs' chat room nogood for the leagues?
Report man of many moods May 30, 2010 8:57 AM BST
Several reasons, none of which are very important really in the great scheme of things.

We would need at least 3 different chat rooms set up so as not to interfere with any multi-player quizzes and because there are often matches from each Division going on at the same time.

So there would be at least 3 different addresses for everyone to navigate to watch individual matches, which a lot of spectators do. It’s very easy to switch from one match to another on the Forum, but it would require several different windows open to view the chat rooms. Not only that, but if a spectator arrives late, he can’t see what’s gone before.

There’s also the problem of archiving. I very often have a look at the previous evening’s matches the following morning, as I know a lot of others do. There are very often ongoing conversations on match threads, especially if El Dragon’s been playing.

There have also been numerous occasions when one of us has wanted/needed to find an old thread in the archives, for any number of reasons.

So if we used chat rooms, the only way to archive stuff would be for the ref or one of the players to remember to copy and paste the whole thing to a Forum thread when the match is over. A bit of a pain. And we do need league matches to be transparent; available for anyone to look at after the event.

Finally, the leagues are an interactive Betfair forum activity, and as such, that’s where they should take place. Holding them elsewhere defeats the object of them to a certain extent.

These are just my own views by the way. Others may see it differently.
Report UTI May 30, 2010 9:06 AM BST
Nope what you've said there makes sense.  I'm not even sure if you can c and p the whole thread - don't lots of theposts disappear after 10 minutes or so?

Oh well, what a shame.
Report man of many moods May 30, 2010 9:18 AM BST
Like I said, none of those are particularly important.

We're half-way throughthe current season. Obviously if players want to finish the season by using a chat room instead of the forum, then it can be done. We just won't have a permanent record of it, or many spectators.
Report mr winkle May 30, 2010 10:39 AM BST
Nirvana, Tobermory, and a few others of that ilk, only appeared here mainly for quizzes.

They are probably on another forum decimating the opposition until this place is fit for quizzing again.
