Andy Murray is technically the best British player there has ever been.
Anyone who disputes that is misguided but that is okay because this is not the tennis forum. Feel free to mention names from different eras (who wouldn't be fit to take a set off Murray on a level playing field) He is the Uk's best chance of a slam, and there is nobody... I repeat nobody.. lining up to take his place. The transition from henman's semifinal appearances to Murray's semifinals has given Middle England the warm fuzzy impression that there will always be someone to cheer on the hill in the second week. The likelihood is that after Murray, no Brit will be in contention in week two of Wimbledon for 15 or 20 years. Chew that one over, folks. Yes it is NIL, ZERo , 0 , etc but at leat he's out there trying to give you something. |
|
By:
Agreed, and he's every chance of doing it in the future.
But for now, NONE |

Journeyman - two points.
1. Players of different eras were not as fit as those of today, for sure. But if they lived in this era, they would be. It is not true I believe to say Murray is the most talented tennis player we have ever had; we have had slam winners. 2. Tennis is an individual sport, you don't represent your country. You don't, for example, do national anthems or national strips. Except of course, you can chose to do so in tennis by playing Davis Cup. Murray chooses not to. |
|
By:
i agree with 13:58
btw, NIL |
|
By:
Sometimes Henman chose not to also.
They have to do what's right for their tennis career ..... What's more important Britain getting out of the bottom group or Britain getting a Grand Slam winner ? |
|
By:
Two decent points I agree. In response
1. It's been suggested before that if specifically Perry was transported, packet of **** in pocket, to the 21st century, he'd naturally raise his fitness levels to compete because he had a winner's mentality and would do what he needed to do to compete. That is speculation thaough and there's no gurantee he'd have been able to make that transition. Based purely on what we know about the FACT about British players, Murray is by a distance the best there has ever been. 2. This is trickier. Yes it is an individual sport and the likes of Federer have always manifestly played for themselves and their own legends with scant interest in representing their country. Ivanisevic however was a player whose need to win for his country (as he perceived it) hindered him in his efforts to win thye big titles (and interfered with his efforts to win a better medal at the Olympics). Murray to me seems to have been brainwashed by the media and 'Today at Wimbledon' to have become slightly inhibited by an idea of playing for his country that otherwise wouldn't even have occured to him. He knows on paper he's just playing for himself, but how can he be expected to fully avoid the hype when he looks up and sees beckham and the flippin Queen gurning down at him. |

The Beckham thing made me puke. They share the same agent, unsurprisingly. Beckham has PR problems in Scotland, Murray has one in England. The whole thing was choreographed to enhance their value to advertisers either side of the border.
I have to support England in the footy, or Britain in the Olympics (and Davis Cup); they are my country. I don't have to support any individual though who isn't representing anyone, and I find Murray an offensive man. He's a hell of a tennis player, but not quite great. |
|
By:
On the different era point, is your analysis is right, current players should always be regarded as higher value than past ones. I don't buy that. McEnroe, Borg etc. Will always be greats in any company. Because they were the greatest of their time.

I guess it's more about the fact that our little island hosts the biggest tennis tournament in the world and the fact that it's so long since a British man won is a bit conspicuous. Federer in Australia made his joke about how it was 2000 years since a British slam winner and the whole crowd erupted in laughter. It was a clever move because even though Federer couldn't care less about the notion of playing tennis for his country, he knew that comment would pile on the media pressure on Murray in the final.

A quick comparison:
The Betfair Chit Chat forum (consisting of mainly middle aged, balding, fat blokes who sit around in their underpants in front of the computer all day) : - At least ZERO Andy Murray (a professional tennis player who's main goal should be to win as many Grand Slam events as he possibly can) :- Definately ZERO |
|
By:
I saw on the news last week that Murray was doing quite well in some tennisy thing in London. Just thought I'd pop in to check how many slams he picked up.
Oh. |
|
By:
After today's Men's Final there is going to be a special presentation to Andy Murray on Centre Court to commemorate his tally of ZERO Grand Slam wins to date.
A very nice gesture from the AELTC. Let's hope Andy gets a rousing cheer. |
|
By:
What time is the final? Some of us are going to look pretty stupid if Murray wins it.
|
|
By:
The sad news is that the little bloke who cleans the lavs who carries the bags out for the Men's Final has declined to make the presentation.
Thankfully the littlest bloke from 'Top Street Dance Act' (whatever the f*** that is) called NonDiversity has agreed to step in at a moment's notice. |
