ok so if he wins his maiden slam it's all good for him and he is currently trading at 2.36 despite being the only one deffo in the final... clearly has a good mathematical chance
but what would be the psychological impact if he were to lose a 5th GS final? Jimmy White lost 6 World Snooker finals at the Crucible and that is the biggest streak of losing in major finals I know 5 slam finals though... could drive you nuts couldn't it? |
|
By:
particulary if the 5th was against ferrer
![]() |
|
By:
if he loses to Ferrer he might as well quit and go enjoy the money
![]() |
|
By:
His coach, Lendl, lost his first four too, before going on to win a fair few. I'd agree a defeat to Ferrer might be more psychologically damaging than a defeat to Novak, but I couldn't see either hurting that much. Two slam finals in a row and a Wimbledon gold medal would still be a best ever season. Feeling you're progressing is key I think.
|
|
By:
Personally though, I think he's gonna nail it.

Not many players win their first slam aged 27 though Also it will probably be a while before he can win one without having to beat Nadal |
|
By:
Then it's a good job he's not 27 until mid 2014.
I'm not sure about Nadal. Extremely 'fit' sportsmen tend to be injury-prone, like Tiger Woods. I'm sure he'll get back, but he may not be the player he was. |
|
By:
26 even!
they all seem to win their first under 25 anyway i think he might win this too, but would be his biggest chance by far yet, so could be the breaking of him to lose |
|
By:
it's not being fit that makes sportspeople injury prone
it's the damage their bodies undergo during the training they need to do to get to their level that causes the injuries many promising athletes never make it to the seniors or even fulfill their potential because injury prevents them |

One reason I've never spent a day in hospital!

I speak from experience as I worked as a sports therapist for 25 years
this is one of the biggest threats to someone like Laura Robson with her recent success bat the USO. The temptation could easily be to push harder and harder in training in an attempt to achieve even greater success in shorter time. However, with a young person who is not used (adapted to) to extreme physical training this can lead to tissue breakdown, over use injury and interruptions in their schedule. Ideally, a trained person will design a program for her whereby her progress is 'periodised' over a period of 3 or more years so that she reaches her peak by steady progress without suffering interruptions This is key because of a function called the Principle of Reversibilty which pretty much means: gains from training are lost 3 times faster than they are made when the athlete is inactive due to injury. So if you suffer a complete break of 3 months say it will take you 9 complete months of training to recover the lost gains. How long was JMDP absent due to his wrist injury? A year or more was it? Well... it will take him 3 years to get back to where he was |
|
By:
your outright book must be a bit ropey judo
you rated him a 10s shot before the first round in new york ![]() ![]() |
|
By:
Laura Robson's led me to a few tissue breakdowns. Over the last few months only, obviously.
|
|
By:
my book is an absolute disaster in the outright although I have recovered a lot on other trades especially ivanovic vs stephens that was spectacular
but yeah murray win gonna cost me a tasty amount |
|
By:
tbf I did say the 5.3 was short and murry was matchedd at 14 in the outright during the cilic match
so I was right that he was under priced not that that will help if he wins ![]() |
|
By:
true
![]() unlike many, you put forward a detailed argument how he should be a lot more than 5.5 definitely been a feature recently that betting on perceived bad draws are a one way ticket to the poor house |
|
By:
For the first time ever I'm concerened.....I've a horrible feeling he's going to win this one
![]() ![]() Here's hoping his legendary choke kicks in on Monday..... ![]() Until then......and hopefully beyond then.....NIL ![]() |
|
By:
what legendary choke is that then? can you give specific examples of a time, and I mean a named opponent in a specific match, where Murray has choked? I do bare in mind that a footy fan like yourself will have a much wider definition of what constitutes a choke than an old school tennis fan like me.
You probably think losing slam finals to the Fed and Djoko counts as a choke but I'm not accepting those losses. Basically you are just perpetuating a juvenile distortion in order to meet your prejudice. I must admit I thought he chucked away the Wimbledon final because he would have been a massive fav if he took the second set. But that wasn't a choke he just got outplayed on 3 or 4 points by the greatest/winngmost player ever which is hardly reason for a bash |
|
By:
Yeah I can't remember Murray every choking. Losing to a better player sure, but choking...when?
Pretty much the same for Henman, too. |
|
By:
judorick, now that is somebody who knows what he is talking about.I have never heard so much cr@p talked about Andy Murray by clueless mugs on here.
|
|
By:
I have watched virtually every match he has played on tour since 2005 and I can not really remember a proper choke as I would define it. Sure, he has just come out and played a few shockers in minor events and has had two bad losses at USO (Cilic & Warwinka) but losing in a semi final or final to multi slammers like Federer and Nadal is no shame whatsoever
He has been very unlucky to face Fed in 3 finals and Djoko in the other. Check out which players Fed, Djoko and Nadal faced when winning their maiden slams... Phillipoussis Puerta Tsonga I would fancy Muzza to beat all of them |
|
By:
the stat about not winning your first slam til after 26 is pretty irrelevant here because murray has been consistently making finals since he was 21, his opponents have been 2 of the greatest ever, and tennis is a much older sport than it was 10 years ago.
and his current record of having the best return game on hard courts since records began in the early 90's shows his game is hardly going backwards. of course the lendl factor is huge. i've been saying he needs to play more aggressive for years. good to see he's finally admitted that was a problem for him. |
|
By:
wawrinka was his only choke. won the first set then was shot mentally. against cilic he had a wrist injury which badly affected the shots he could play. gotta feel his tanking of pre slam tournies like rafa has always done has been a benefit too.
|
|
By:
yes I{ reckon he wasted a good 2 years not having a proper coach - remember when all he did was run round like a bunny chipping the ball back from 5 metres behind the baseline? that tactic was never gonna get him where he wanted in the modern game - and he is fully developed now... will have plenty of chances in the rest of his career and just needs to convert one (currently 2.36 and 1 match away here)
|
|
By:
against rafa in 08 he was aggressive then seemed to abandon that tactic
his serving has also improved under lendl |
|
By:
yes the Warwinka match was extremely bemusing as he seemed to just crumble but I thought it was a physical thing
the Cilic loss was shocking at the time until it turned out he had a sprained wrist and took 9 weeks off after the match - you still see people bash him for that match which is laughable - had he been fit would he have taken 2 months off? anyway he is pretty tough in tight match situations imo |
|
By:
yeah sky showed him getting treatment the morning of the match but people didn't think it was that serious
|

WTF is this, read the damn thread title!
