The quiz will consist of thirty six questions on the following subjects:
General Knowledge History Science and Nature Geography Sport and Leisure Film and Television Words and Numbers Art and Literature
The questions are categorised as either red ball questions (worth one point) or colour ball questions (worth between two and seven points).
RED BALL QUESTION RULES
Red ball questions are open for everyone to answer.
Red ball questions are all General Knowledge and are worth one point to the fastest correct answer.
No penalty is levied for an incorrect answer.
The winner of a red ball question can then select a colour and a subject for the next question.
COLOUR BALL QUESTION RULES
Colour ball questions are open for everyone to answer.
Colour ball questions will be on the subjects of History, Science and Nature, Geography, Sport and Leisure, Film and Television, Words and Numbers, or Art and Literature depending on the choice of the preceding red ball winner.
Yellow ball questions will be the easiest and black ball questions the most difficult.
Yellow ball questions are worth two points to the first correct answer and one point to the second correct.
Green ball questions are worth three points to the first correct, two to the second and one point to the third.
This structure applies all the way up to black ball questions where seven correct answers (if applicable) score seven, six, five, four, three, two and one point respectively.
PENALTIES
Penalty points are deducted for incorrect answers on colour ball questions only.
An incorrect answer posted during yellow, green and brown ball questions will incur four away.
Incorrect answers posted on a blue ball question are five away; pink, six away; and black, seven away.
TEA BREAKSc[_]
There will be tea breaks after each fifth red and colour have been potted.
THE END GAME
Once fifteen reds and colours have been potted / answered the final six colours: yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black will decide the game.
Penalties apply during this stage.
SCORING
The maximum possible score / break is 147, though anything over 40 will probably win the Crucible Quiz.
Zero is the lowest anyone can go; no minus scores will be entered.
TIES
Ties will be decided with a re-spotted black question on General Knowledge.
GENERAL RULES OF THE GAME
Surnames are acceptable unless a full name has been requested in the question.
Abbreviations are entered at the quizzer's own risk; some are acceptable and some are not. Villa instead of Aston Villa, for example, would be permissable. KD instead of Kentucky Derby would not. As a general rule of thumb: if you're unsure if the abbreviation will be acceptable, it probably isn't.

Many thanks for playing everyone. Congratulations Dan, and commiserations Easter - so close to that threepeat sir!
Sincere apologies for the many errors; I don't believe I have made so many in all my other quizzes put together.
And, of course, a huge thanks to Mr Nibbs for his superb scoreboard. I couldn't have completed the quiz tonight without him such were my numerous problems.

It was a real struggle from start to finish as the site kept freezing up. And, of course, when I had to open up another window to check the stewards enquiries it made it much worse.
Although there were only three contentious questions out of thirty-six, this may spell the end of me making them up as I go along. :(
Blimey, it's taken it out of me that has. It was a real struggle from start to finish as the site kept freezing up. And, of course, when I had to open up another window to check the stewards enquiries it made it much worse.Although there were only

That's incredible if he did! Forty-six points away in fouls and still won. Your scoreboard really is marvellous, sir; little stats like that are very interesting indeed.

I was quite surprised anyone got the Captain Kirk answer to be honest.
I like to make the final black ball quite tough and I happened to hear John Carpenter mention the mask in an interview some time ago and thought it would make a good quiz question.

I think the Risk/Reward format is excellent. If you're unsure and consider posting an answer for long enough, you risk "fouling" without the advantage of gaining points by posting down the field.
As I did with Hibernia... and almost for the speaker!

I take pride in hosting a good quiz, though, and although the mistakes might add a little flavour to proceedings I find them very vexing indeed! I really don't believe I have made so many in all the other quizzes put togther, but it was a nightmare tonight with the computer glitches and it was putting me off my game.
That's my excuse anyway and I'm sticking to it. :)

I definitely thought Nirv had it in the bag tonight after his Lord Chancellor answer.
Who would have guessed, after hundreds of years, it just got changed in 2006?
That was very unlucky for him I think. :(

Was just looking at Nirv on the progression scoreboard. With his pedigree, if that was a snooker mach people would be shouting**
Changing subject slightly Poker, do you have any kowledge of the venue for the World qualifiers in Sheffield? i.e. Logistics of the place, viewing areas etc.
As we missed out on the Crucible ballot, I'm thinking of going on the Sunday.

Cheers PM. Sorry I couldn't make it until the colours. I'm destined never to take the spoils I feel. Well played Dan.....I'm not sure I actually layed you in running...you will have to check the thread carefully...lol

I'm not as knowledgable about the game as I once was, sir. I haven't been to the Crucible in over twenty years! Shocking really.

I'm sure you'll win one day Jim. If you can play from the start it is normally sound game strategy that will win you this quiz.
Nirv and Easter are very tactically astute but, for once, it was the mercurial flair of the young Irishman that took home the trophy this evening. It's like 1982 all over again.

Dan was never ahead until the final question; where he overtook Nirv who had almost led from start to finish. This format certainly makes for an exciting quiz.

Is it possible from the chart to see who had the highest break Mr Nibbs?
A break consists of any continuous score by the way. So one would need to get the red to further the break, but not necessarily first in on the colour.

Thank you Mr Nibbs ..I knew I might be Top of that table .... If I learned to stop fouling I think I'd be in the near chasing pack just behind the Leaders :-)

I meant to ask, did you read that discussion we had on here a few weeks ago concerning the use of topspin?
It's worth a look as it turned into a right old barney. :^0

I did read that thread Poker. Initially I feared you'd lost the plot. :) However someone confirmed they did the blue up & down test which seemed to validate your assertion.

Yeah. I thought it would attract a lively debate, but I was astonished how uppity some people got over the subject.
It was worthwhile for me, though, as I'm writing a book regarding that general topic and it's always very useful to hear the opinions of others.

There was a link to a website hosted by a chap called David Alciatore which offered video evidence appearing to show a fractional overspin (for want of a better word) of maybe 25th of a second, but I don't believe it was conclusive at all and such a miniscule reaction could easily be attributed to the tiniest of imperfections on the cloth.
I should point out, though, that I was already familiar with this gentleman's work and there is no doubt he is extremely knowledgable on the subject of billiard physics.

I watched those youtube videos with the sandpaper. Not very conclusive.
If I remember rightly, Steve Davis paid some detail to he physics of the game. Recall him doing a show on the Q.E.D. programme on BBC in the mid 80's.

Did he? I remember the QED series but I must have somehow missed that episode. :(
Most professional players are largely ignorant of the physics. I don't blame them, of course, why bother with it if you're brilliant anyway?
Steve has always been the exception here; I think he is genuinely interested to learn everything he can and always seems open to new ideas.

Not totally relevant to the debate, but I try to avoid above centre striking, unless absoloutely necessary. Feel far more comfortable using centre or below centre striking.
Lots of older players address the cue ball very high. Perhaps it's a trait from playing pool with a smaller white?
Fergal O' Brien used to have a site ("Ask Fergal" I think) where he would gladly respond to snooker related questions.

That's an interesting comment about the older players; I'll look into that one.
And also about Fergal's website. I wasn't aware of that either. Mind you, I once had quite an argument with Mark Williams on here concerning the physics of the game, so perhaps it may be wise not to antagonise yet another professional; there won't be any left to endorse my book!

My memory is a bit sketchy, but I think the Q.E.D. programme involved S.D. and a robot, choosing shots based on probability.
I seem to recall S.D. beating the robot easily. Considering he's no longer a prolific break builder, a lot of Davis's longevity must be down to his shot selection.

Just to clarify about the older players, I'm referring to club players, not the pros. I've never seen much footage of Joe Davis et al.
Someone on the Snooker forum (may have been SnookerBacker) partly attributed J. White's poor performances on his low striking on the new finer cloths.

Hmmm? It seems a bit of a paradoxical belief, as you're not alone in feeling more in control, not less, with a lower strike Graham; most players would say the same.
I'm not saying he is not correct, of course, but it would be interesting to know if snookerbacker has based this assumption on any physical evidence, or just a general hunch.

I may be doing SB a dis-service here. I can't recall for sure who posted
If it's not on the match thread that I've ttt'd , start a new post on the snooker forum. I'm sure whoever raised the issue, will elaborate.
To be fair, on that night it was difficult to argue, given JW lack of cue ball control.
Strangely enough, JW is allegedly playing really well away from the tournament tables. (147 & 146 in an Exh. this week).

That shot into the pack of reds demonstrates the Jimmy of old and new, he hasn't adapted his game, Davis has done it, Hendry is trying to do it. Jimmy never will, he seems to think he can play the old shots on new tables.
tennis plums done 10 Jan 21:44
how dyou mean SB,
snookerbacker 10 Jan 21:46
Jimmy plays most shots with bottom tpd. He doesn't concentrate on striking the cue ball in the centre to make the shot and control the pace. You have to do that here. The difference between the tables he wins on and these is immense.
tennis plums done 10 Jan 21:48
yeah, he addresses very low, always has done. your right it must be hard to hit plain ball, which is key on these cloths yes

I just hope that more tournies involving Jim will be on the box. I still like the guy, but he needs to buy himself one of those championship tables and needs more time on TV.

Snookerbacker and TPD are both in agreement, but I'd be interested to hear if they are just speaking from experience or if they actually know why it is imperative to dead ball the white on the thinner cloths?

Physically, they are saying it is favourable for the cueball to be rolling rather than sliding, but I wonder why this should be so?
As you have experienced for yourself, Graham, a sliding ball is usually easier to control. Interesting.

Ive just looked in on this quiz, yet again its a fantastic quiz despite the hiccups with a couple of questions. Pokermonster you always do put on a good quiz my friend.
Im very very impressed with Mr Nibbs scoring, its absolutely amazing. I cant get my head round how its done in such a short space of time!! I take my hat off to you my friend, before that we thought a few underlining names and leaders in bold was as good as it got.... how we can laugh at us mere mortals now!!
Great work Poker and Mr Nibbs..
